Thanks. Can't wait to play with the Alclad and Floquil paints.
Finally received the replacement clear parts from Revell for my P51D and are equally distorted as the first ones! So much for good quality control. I sent them another email with pictures this time so there is confusion. This is frustrating.
That sucks PJ. Hope you get it straightened out soon...

I keep hitting "escape", but I'm still here.
CB and fox thanks.
This is how my parts look. Notice the distortion in the circled areas. The front windshield panel is very wavy. The distortion is not noticeable at a quick glance but a closer look reveals the imperfections.
The windshield side panels look good.
Got a very apologetic reply from Revell today, and re sending parts again. Fingers crossed.

Sorry to hear about your troubles PJ. I had to go through two rounds of replacement canopies on a Revell 109G a couple of years ago. Same issue. Good luck and let's hope Revell comes through.
Thanks Hoss, hoping for good parts to get here.
Been slowly working on my Mustang while waiting for the replacement parts that came in but are just a tad better than the kit’s so I will take that to the bank so to speak. Revell sent me 3 canopies and are different types.
The wing panel lines were puttied up to the center of the wing just like they did back then then shot silver enamel paint on most of the bottom wing and all of the top wing as this was the process done on the later Mustangs. Gloss black was sprayed and then was polished with Novus 2 to get a glass smooth finish. I experimented with a couple of panels and shot gloss dark grey to get contrast and break up the solid polished aluminum color yet to come.
Alclad Polished Aluminum was sprayed but allowing some of the dark base color to peak thru for the metal tonal shades.
It takes a bit more surface prep work but the extra effort pays off. I think I will mask off a couple of panels and shoot another Alclad shade to get different tones.
Got some painting done on the canopy, partial anti glare panel, prop spinner, windscreen and rudder. The checkered rudder decal had to be trimmed to make it fit properly. I shot the rudder white then red and tested tge trimmed decal that looks good to my eyes.
Will start on the checkered nose soon.
Excellent modeling. the wheel wells are fine indeed.

Thanks John. The checkered nose decals are coming along and fitting pretty darn good. Pictures to come.
Very happy how well the nose checkerboard decals came out being separated into 6 parts lining up very nicely. The decal film is very thin and of excellent quality. Lifelike Decals are fantastic. Lots of Solvaset helped to snuggle things down specially near the prop area.
Mary has 14 kill marks on the canopy frame so it's best not to *** her off lol!
Hi, Ernie -
You've kicked it into high gear now, this one is really moving down the assembly line. Mighty fine looking job, the finish is well on the way to completion. I really like the results of the checkerboard areas, those multiple pieces on the nose came together perfectly.
This has been an enjoyable project to follow, I learned some things as it progressed. Thanks for the detailed post and photos.
Patrick
Hey thanks Patrick. Mary is slowly shaping up. I'm pretty happy with the build and decals so far. The nose checkerboard decal took a few hours to apply but the fit is exceptional. The wingtips will get checkerboards next but have to spray the white color first.

Thanks stik. Yea it's hard for me to just do one out of the box.
I have most of the big decals on but still have to spray the wingtips white to add the checkerboards. The metallic shades are very subtle but different tones are visible. The puttied wings were sprayed with Floquil Old Silver for the lacquered silver look. Also used Flory Dark Dirt wash to pop skin details. Lots of tiny stencils are yet to be applied.
I love this scheme on a P-51D. Great work. I have a 1/24 of Big Beautiful Doll. I need to get a ton of good stuff for that one and I'm a bit intimidated by it. Hope I can do it justice like you have here.

Thanks BK. That bigger scale sounds like it will be an awesome build.
Well Mary is shaping up and she got her legs and wing tips checker boarded. I toned down the Alclad reflectivity a tad since this was a combat aircraft subjected to operational wear.
Very nice build

Thanks!
Outstanding build plasticjunkie! Love those checkerboard markings and the yellow on the canopy frame for a splash of color. I'm surprised that you don't see more of these kits built up. They're a very good kit for a great price. Take carfe & stay safe.
