A-10 ACES II Safety Pins
Posted by MusicCity on Tuesday, May 3, 2005 8:03 AM
The pictures of the ACES II seat installed in the A-10 that I've been able to find don't show the locations of the ground safety pins and "Remove Before Flight" flags. The only one I can see clearly is one that covers both pitot tubes with a flag hanging down in front of the seat as shown in This Photo On Ejectionsite.Com I would think that there would be at least one more. Anyone know where they would be located?

You can see the streamer from the other pin.

On the left hand side of the seat pan, by the pilots left knee there is a small lever, this is the seat safety. It should also have a pin I belive.

The photo though is from An F-16, so the seats DO have some differences!!

Just so you know!

Think the A-10 got a totally different Ejection handle system

Thanks for the help. I saw the streamer laying there but couldn't tell where it went.

I was aware that the photo was from an F-16 but Ejectionsite's photos of the A-10 seat aren't very helpful in this respect. The seat is out of the airplane and is pretty bare. They did show a comparison of the A-10 handle and the F-15 handle, but not the -16.

Anyway, thanks again for the info. It is appreciated.

I poked through my A-10 Walkaround, A-10 Mini In Action, and A-10 In Action, and the only picture I found of an installed A-10 seat shows a pin just below the left handle.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for looking, I appreciate the help. I guess since I'm not building a real one that as long as I get a streamer going over the left side of the seat somewhere around where the pilot's knee would be I'll be in good shape. I can't remember offhand exactly how the left side of the seat is molded, but it seems like it shows the seat safety lever. I'll have to check when I get home.

Here's the A-10 Seat, the safety lever is the lever just aft of the ejection handle on the left side

Edited contet:
Seat picture is of course courtesy of the "Ejection Site!

The little hole is where the pin goes (Double safety...)

After the seat has been fired, or unsafe seat looks like this:

You know ... the top photo I have printed and in my reference info. The other two photos I have seen, and may have printed, but never even noticed the safety pin hole Blush [:I]

Sometimes you just have to have things pointed out to you. Thanks for the help. I would never have noticed it.

Later ....

Here's what I went with. I think the flags are a bit big, but they are 1/48 scale PE flags on a 1/32 scale seat. You should see how big the 1/32 scale flags are! I'm also not real wild about the tubes over the pitot horns and may redo those.

The manual chute release handle (the square handle on the right side of the seat) should be pinned also. On F-15's both seat pins are attached to one streamer with one pin on each end. Thus, the streamer would lie diagonally across the seat cushion. Can't say if this is how it's done on A-10's, but would guess it probably is.

Thanks, Adam. Glad you like it. The cockpit (and seat) are from Cutting Edge and are so far the only thing on this nightmare that have gone together properly.

PR, I'm not sure I can get the front streamer off without causing a mess now. It's glued to the seat frame in 2 places. I may just have to add another one to get to the manual chute release. Thanks for the info though, I'll do something.

My old unit had a pouch that the sholder straps went into that was part of the pitot covers & RBF flags, also there is a throttle cover that goes over the #2 throttle handle (to cover the switches)

Thanks for the info, Cuda. I can come up with a cover for the throttle, but it's gonna have to cover both of them since they are molded as a single unit. I'll see what I can do. Thanks again for the help.
