Getting back to the Monogram 1/48 C-47 again
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, May 16, 2005 9:59 PM
I kinda "shelved" this one for a while. Cutting all the windows from clear sheet makes them look much better than the thick kit pieces, but I needed a rest from the kit for a while after that. Getting fresh bottles of Interior Green and Olive Drab paint means I can "pick up the pieces" once again.

The throttle quadrant was scratchbuilt, using excellent pics I found on the web. I also painted needles and ticks, along with some pseudo-stenciling, on the control panel. The dials were just blank discs.

As I'll be doing a base and adding figures to this one, it will be weathered. I have "worn" the paint on the floors with drybrushing. I also added shading and dirt from pastels. The strip at the top of the cabin will be tightened once the cabin is glued to the fuselage half.

Something a little different from me !

Cool, Pix........
Can't wait to see it done.
I'm going to convert mine into VH-AES, the ex-Trans Australia Airlines "Hawdon" courtesy of Roodecal........should be fun.

Cheers, LeeTree

Thanks Lee, dragonfly, Joe, Hector, Frank, yardbird, falcon, mucker, Thad, and Josh !

Lee - this one will be wearing D-Day markings from an Eagle Strike sheet. I'll also be using some of the figures.

dragonfly - the belts are molded to the seats. These were the most crisply molded items in the kit.

Thad - it's a nice kit, despite the raised panel lines. The clear (!) parts are thick, and there's no real detail in the wheel wells (I scratchbuilt simplified one on this build). It definately captures the outlines well.

Josh - and the levers move, too ! (just kidding !)

Thanks again !

Have you cowled the engines yet? Did you do any of your magic on them?

I may get so drunk, I have to crawl home. But dammit, I'll crawl like a Marine.

You outta call yourself "Mr. Patience". Oh, would that my hands were that steady, and my eyesight so keen!

Course, Pix, and not to change the subject, but I also am eagerly anticipating what you're gonna do with that miserable Monogram B-26 kit. I want to build another one and I need the inspiration.

Thanks ModelNerd, Keyworth, Jeff, and Aviator !

ModelNerd - I've cut back to 2 pots of coffee a day from 4. Guess that explains the steadier hands. I don't feel that the Monogram B-26 is miserable. The nacelles and cowls fit fine after trimming and sanding. They may not even need filler. Fitting the resin interior has been a lot of hard work, though. It took me nearly all weekend to thin down the nosegear well and cockpit floor until they would fit. The sidewalls will be more difficult, since I have to carve the curvature of the fuselage into these parts. The bottoms alone are about 1/4" too thick.

I figured I'd add a couple pics of some stuff I finished before the kit got shelved.

The wheel wells were pretty much open, with just some inaccurate raised lines on the top. I used sheet styrene, pie-tin metal, solder, and wire to add the details here. The wells haven't been washed or dryubrushed yet.

And here's my little"Band of Brothers" (with Screamin' Eagle patches) that will occupy the scene.

The kit has nine paratrooper figures, but there are three of each pose. I don't think they used clones !
