Had to stop by the LHS to steady my nerves...

 

Well hurry up and get started so I can watch someone with a clue put one of these together.

With armor builds, as long as there is no interior to worry about, and depending upon what type of tracks it may have, it is easy to do lots of building before any painting. Although I did paint the tracks first thing here before cutting any parts off of the sprues and gluing them together....

 ... and now that damn bug has bitten me again... I swear there needs to be an immunization shot for this...

 

I really do NOT like open sponson bottoms. so I added some sheet styrene to fill the ones on this...

 

 

And then I added some front plates on the lower hull in front of the sprockets... but then if I am gonna display ths with a figure one day, it can't be buttoned up so I started adding some inner panel works... 

 

 

and as you can see thru the open hatches

 

 

 

I'll add some more basic detailing in there like laterals, pedals, and seats... but not go overboard like on my B-26....

 

so this is how the sub assemblies together look now...

I live in an area of 3 Million people who come from everywhere in the world, and getting a license is the American Dream.

I am not complaining, it's just that there are so many people now. Do you know, twice as many people alive now than the day I was born.

It's a sweet kit. Of course I also bought the Walk Around book, a bottle of Tamiya Nato Black, needed another can of Fine White Primer, and grabbed some 0.030 for the future M59 project.

Came home and ordered the Eduard PE for the Nighthawk. Had to, the bomb trapezes on the 1:1 are wondrous complicated affairs, on the kit not so much. I'm going to model her bombed up, RBF flags all over.

Otherwise, I got the seams in the intakes on the Nimrod sorted out- no FOD covers for me. Masked and glued on the front window part, managed to not get any fingerprints on it either. I'm shooting to get her to decals by end of this weekend.

Pirates trounced my Giants....

NO! No cutting of kit parts! Scratching stuff visibile thru kit openings, ok... major surgery... NO!!!!

 

Yeah, I know you folks in that area are a melting pot... and far more confined than any other geographic area except perhaps Manhattan island... water does that.

But I did not know about the population doubling in your lifetime... that is not good...

Day one of the build is done. Spent most of the time masking the hull for the anti-skid coating...then sprayed and let it dry for for a hour or so. Still needs a tad bit of cleaning...this is the 1st time I have tried this technique using rattle-can terra-cotta spray for the anti-skid coating.

Yes we did on the A1's. Here is a A1 from my company (2nd Plt. I was in 3rd Plt), you can see the anti-skid and also the armor added over the drivers periscopes.

i hate open sponsons too. unless i have side skirts like a KING TIGER. and i fill in the motor holes on old TAMIYA kits, though not as finished as upper surfaces.

i seem to be anal about sink wells. i dry fit and spend time on the obvious ones like the inner door panels on the SCUD. others might be rougher as they probably won't be seen like the wheel wells on the SCUD. I AM NOT filling in any on the bottom as this will be on a base. this really is a big deal for me because it still doesn't feel right. also i like filling and sanding, i find it relaxing. 

i'll post pics later today. worked on control section, filled in some mold hgoles in the wheel wells and seems for the outer pieces. nothing major. may have to paint the chassis snf undrside black as this seems to be standard with russian stuff. BTW per previous discussion on lack of tie rods on russian equipment, i looked at my OTS S-300 SAM 8x8 and it doesn't have tie rods either.

Well the bumber code on the final drive housing is one way. C21. Vehicle 1, 2nd platoon, Charlie Company,

I am gonna venture a guess that the two blocks/dots in the forward facing chevron on the sideskirts is also 2nd Plt ID mark? Unit ID marks like that are not standard Army wide and vary quite a bit.

My father served during desert storm. I remember Mom putting a long paper chain around my room to count how many days until Daddy comes home. I was like, two I think?

Dad would want me to build an f111, so I'll see what I can do about that.

Owl, Welcome Aboard! You have been added to the roster. Three types of F-111 were used in this war- E's, flying out of Turkey from the north, F's, flying from Saudi in the south, and EF-111As attached to both 111 units for EW support. Please let me know what kit you choose, so I can update your choice.

The final drives...left final drive 24-3-15I...24th ID(M) 3rd Battlion 15th Infantry Regement and the right with C21 denotes Company...C or Charlie Co. and platoon (2nd plt) and vehicle in the plt. (1-4) The chevrons are for quick ID and designate which company and plt. The "V" on the Tow launcher was painted on all divisional vehicles since the 24th ID was known as the "Victory" division.

Interesting range of tac signs you have there. Given the placement,did you ever have issues about being able to ID a vehcile because the signs were covered by mud.

We covered the divisional markings on the front and rear before the ground war, and never had a issue with mud or dirt obscuring the chevrons in the desert, but with all the equipment and misc stuff we had hanging along the sides, we couldn't see the markings anyway.

IIRC, the 48th was the only unit to operate the 111F. At least until they re equipped with the F-15E and all F-111s in the Air Force were consolidated into one base as they were being phased out of service. A few more units operated the 111E, but the ones deployed to Turkey in 91 came out of RAF Upper Heyford.

Well, I just bought a book about Harriers in GW 1, gearing up for the LHA build. And I've got a little info on the 37th TFW Nighthawks. Just about nil on my Nimrod, but as I post stuff I'll stick in what I know until you all get bored with me.

I'm done for the night. Frustrated and have a headache (from squinting trying to see small parts) after 2.5 hrs scratchbuilding (well trying anyway) handles for the side armor, since thay are not in the kit. Finally managed to get 3 on one side looking fair...I only 5 more to build and that side will be done. Yayyy At least the right side only has six handles. I have got to find a decent stand alone magnifying glass...my eyes ain't what they use to be.

got some more done. i put the control section together and had to work on outside seam. sanded promed repainted and didn't feather enough so resanded and reprimed and painted. another lesson learned. there is a decaled instrument panel in the compartment. obviously wheel wells aren't going to be seen so my rough fillls and sanding were good enough. decided to paint chassis black. wheels are fit tight, no glue.

saw this little bogger i missed. since i might have missile in launch mode, grabbed some styrene from the stash, cut, promed and painted. it is sand, i used white to show what i was doing.

also got the Elevator and Launcher assembled. had to take a deep breathe and easily pry the rear of the glued and painted Elevator to fit the Launcher.  also had st scrap down the Elevation piston and ream out the cylinder on the Transporter sop they would fit. this kit has some nicely fitting parts. kneeling dragon gunner shows size.
