I'm in Boise at the moment and planning to return to my station at control by Oct 1 in Dallas well before launch.

I'll pull out the kit when I arrive and stair at it again (like I already haven't several times)

For research purposes and a good way to spend some quality time with your TV, From the Earth to the Moon is a great watch and pretty accurate. I don't know what I'm doing yet, but y'all will be the second to know.

Mach71: Ohhhh, great photos!!!

Only arguement from me would be- I'd call the business end of the Titan the end with the atomic warhead... at least on the ICBM version. (we need a mushroom cloud emote!)

Lewbud: Thanks, I've heard great things about it but still haven't seen it.

Mach71--I appreciate the Redstone images, since that is what I am building. I can see already from your images that my model has exaggerated features. It is cool to see how it should really look, up close.  Thanks for sharing that.

Would a LEGO model count? I just got the Saturn V (aprox 110:1) and thought it might be an interesting change from standard models.

Modelcrazy>  Hope everything is well, and hope you make it back home safely.Smile

Lewbud> Just remember that a lot of stuff qualifies if you can reference it back to a countries space program.  Cars, aircraft, ships, etc.  I was hoping we might get a T-38 at least!

I've never heard of this variant:  N-205: "Space trainer" variant proposed in May 1958, with triple rocket engines for vertical launch. Capable of Mach 3.2 on its way to an altitude of 200,000 feet (61,000 m).

http://ghostmodeler.blogspot.com/2012/09/talons-in-space-northrops-n-205-proposal.html

And "From the Earth to the Moon" is a great mini-series from HBO.  Recommended.

Mach71> Those are wonderful, and quite a variety.  I must admit, while scrounging through parts for the Apollo model, I found some rockets from the "Man in Space" kit that I intend to "refurbish" if I finish the main project in time.  I only have one Mercury capsule (1/200 scale), so I'll use it on the Atlas and turn the Redstone booster into a Redstone ballistic missle as shown in your photo.  Need to see if I can find some diagrams with measurements.  Thanks!

Dutchman>  After a build review of the Saturn V Lego kit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxtUrloLlm8  Mission Control has given a green light for your planned project.  Really, it's not an accurate representation of a Saturn V, but what current model is?  So, let me know if you want to enter it.  Smile  Anyone who has any questions about this model can watch the above video.

No new photos from me at this time, but here's a nice site if you're looking for stuff from the Apollo program.  LOTS of photos.

Well, my idea of building something about the space race has hit a wall. The kit I was going to use from the "stash" I actually took from my wife. It is the old Revell lunar module landing in 1/48. Once I got it opened I found that half of it is missing. She remembers starting it several years ago but does not know where the rest of it is :eeek: .....

I'm looking for something like that to purchase and join the GB. I am in shock at the prices the Apollo lunar module models are getting. Not sure if I go there or look into something else. Perhaps the Apollo command module, or something in the Mucury or Gemini line of kits. I will let you know when I have it figured out.

Ben>  Well, that's a bummer!  This is why I suggested folks check their builds before the start date.  I have gone through mine and found parts are missing, but think I can scratch-build the necessary components out of other materials.  Replacing the parts for the LM might be a bit difficult.

And I know what you mean about prices on the old Revell spacecraft kits.  I was perusing Ebay to see if I could find parts, and was surprised at just how high the prices had gone.  The old Apollo 1/48 model kit I am building was going for as high as $100!  Maybe I should sell this stuff instead of building it!  However, with the 50th anniversary of the moon landing coming up next year, I expect the new Revell will perhaps be releasing copies of these old kits.

Meanwhile, have you considered a paper model?  I've run across some nice paper models in my searches, and am considering making a 1/24 scale Mercury capsule to go with the Revell 1/24 scale Gemini.  If you have a good color printer and some cardstock, this might be an alternative.  And if you have any aircraft that might have been used for chase planes during the X-craft era or by NASA would be good.  Lots of possibilities.

Let me know if you can't find anything.

There are some great builds here!  Can't wait to see them finished!

I have decided on what kit I would like to submit for approval......Airfix 1/144 Saturn IB-Apollo 7 (#AX06172).  I had so many real space to pick from I just had my son pick one for.  I asked why he picked that one, and in his 7 yo wisdom he said...it looks cool dad.  LOL!  So there you have it.  I'd like to do the COOL Apollo 7 Saturn IB.

I'll post pics of the kit and sprues tonight.

That's an interesting kit.  I don't think I've seen that one.  I'll add it to the build list.

Your son has good taste!

No need to post a kit pic if you don't want to.  I figure we'll see it when you start on the build. Big Smile

Some really nice stuff, and I've found the necessary layout so I can finish up my Apollo 1/48 model, and even add an S-IVB (in 1/48 scale) if I desire! Smile

Ow, that sucks!!!

I was looking around for a gag gift for our IPMS club Christmas party and did come across these. I'm not a big fan of Lindberg and Heller can be a little iffy on quality but hey- $10.00 and $13.50 for a shuttle???

UPDATE: I have found a couple of the Revell 1/48 lunar landers in Evil-bay at much cheaper prices than the others. I am going to try and snag one to complete my partial kit. My back-up plan will be either the 1/48 Mercury and Gemini dual kits from Revell (old and found in my stash as well), or the 1/12 Mercury kit based on what I have seen here.... I willl definately have something "out there"....

Gamera> Once again, some nice photos.  I must admit, the rocket park hasn't changed much.  A a new Saturn-1 and a couple of pieces of equipment, but over-all the same rockets that were there since the early 70s.  Smile

Ben> Glad to hear you're looking for something to complete the LM.  I've been looking through E-Bay too, and the prices STILL surprise me.  But there are some kits on there that are reasonable, and the dual Mercury-Gemini kit is a good one.  I have both in my box of old models, and need to refurbish them someday.  Missing parts for the escape tower on the Mercury, but can probably scratch-build something.

I'm getting stuff collected and ready, and have checked parts inventory.  Prep work is underway.  I need to find some Purple Stuff to help strip old paint from the parts before I repaint.  I've got dimensions for the LES calculated and have already cut a dowel piece to the correct length.  I'll post up a picture of the assemblage soon.

T-Minus 6 days and counting.  All systems still nominal.  Another reminder to Mission Crew to get their build project announced here.  You need to tell me "I am going to build..." rather than just asking if it is okay to do so.  You don't have to fill it out in triplicate, however.

That Voyager will be interesting to see going together.

A very nice selection.

Thanks!

I can honestly say I've never done a real space kit before. I probably wouldn't have given it a thought before. But I have been watching the Science Channel alot the last few years, and I was fascinated with programming on the Voyager Probes and the Grand Tour. And since I am about 1 year older than the probes, it just felt like an obvious spur-of-the-moment addition while collecting kits the last year.

Added plus for me is that the few build reviews I've read/seen suggests that it's a pretty easy kit and pretty much comes together easily (provided it's OOB; the PE stuff is beyond my skill level, for now). I just wanted to do something fairly simple and easy to get my feet wet. Lord knows I have plenty of challenges ahead with some of the other kits in the stash. Clown

I built that one back in January of 17 when FSM did their group build...it is a nice, quick build kit.  Forget about photoetch...at the time, there was an Eduard set, but it was twice the cost of the kit!

Standing there alone.

The ship is waiting.

All systems are go.

Are you sure?

Control is not convinced.

But the computer has the evidence.

No need to abort.

The countdown starts.

Watching in a trance, the crew is certain.

Nothing left to chance.

All is working.

Trying to relax, up in the capsule.

The count goes on...
