Hans,

Count me in....I was actually thinking about the German Cargo truck chase in Raiders...but you're right...needs to be conflict specific and not part of fantasy or fiction...Will think of something and get back with you.

I'd like to try something from either 'Sahara' or '30 Seconds Over Tokyo'.

I'm glad this doesn't start until Dec!!  I've got to figure out which scene for the dio!

Italeri....the kit was originally released many moons ago, but they often re-release it.  Right now the kit is readily available.  Its been considered one of Italeri's better kits.

Speaking of Raiders of the Lost Ark, I rewatched it the other day, and is that twin-engined tailless German plane real? I doubt it, but I don't know.  Looks cool though

Talk about a build with unlimited possibilities!  I can think of about 10 possibilities right now ranging from the hilarious to the deadly serious.  Will have to do research.  Better start practicing my figures.

Hans,

Can the scene be from a movie about filming a war movie?  I'm thinking about the final scene from The Great Waldo Pepper where Waldo and Kessler face off in a Camel and DR.1.

This is a fun idea! There's that C-47 that keeps showing up, L4, in Band Of Brothers.

But I'm sorely tempted to build the HOS-3 that "Mike Forney" flew in Bridges at Toko Ri, which is a fine movie. FM makes the kit in 1/48, but I'd rather drink Drano.

Belcher made one too, complete with the pilot in top hat. Expensive though, but I'm going to keep an eye out.

Nicely done, Hans. This will be a very popular GB to watch, so get your list up and you have a winner.

Hans,

Here's what I'm thinking..watched scenes from Pearl Harbor...I wanted to go for a dramatic feel...nothing static cause that would be lame..so...there's a scene right when the USS Arizona buckles up and explodes (would need lots of scratchbuilding and special effects) or since I'm mostly an aircraft guy...there's a great scene were the two P-40's are racing across the airfield to get airbourne...I'm thinking full spinning props, blurred ground effects....hmmmm...decisions decisions decisions...

In keeping with the theme, I'd have to say no.  The Great Waldo Pepper wasn't a war movie, and the story didn't take place during WW1.  To do those types of scenes, look to Flyboys, Hell's Angels, or Dawn Patrol, for instance...

I kinda figured that, also started leaning away from it once I realized that to do it justice it would have to be done in 1/32 scale and there are no seated pilot figures in that scale.  Plus the foot print would be too big.  Here's a few scenes I'm toying with:

Belushi chasing after his P-40 at the gas station from 1941

Akroyd and crew standing atop the Lee/Stuart from 1941

The defense of Durant's helo from BlackHawk Down

The scene where the American and German patrols pass each other from Longest Day

The I'm crippled, he's dead and you're lost scene from Longest Day

F-14's and Zeros from Final Countdown

Of course if I really wanted to get ambitious, a battle scene from any movie that had a lot of figures such as Henry V, Zulu/Zulu Dawn, Gettysburg, etc.  But heck, I've got until Dec to do research and make my decision.

Cool idea. Want to play with doing something from "1941" or "Sahara" with the Lee that's been on the shelf since one of those movies was made.......so consider me a definate "maybe" at the moment.

Although I haven't seen the remake, it appears, according to the IMDB, that "Lulubelle" was a Sherman instead of a Lee.

Yes, I mean Bogey with the M3.

Here's one of my first references:

http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r450/tautog_ss199/Hollywoodwar/downloadblog.jpg

I understand the German plane straffing 'Lulubelle' in the film was a P-51B. Something to consider for the scene  I decide to model.

Got so excited about this build I had to make my own little build bage with a poster from the movie.

Hans! Fabulous concept! Good for you!

I love the dates, too. Consider me in with an uncommitted build. The imagination reels!

(I will put dibs on the final scene from 'Casablanca' with the WB knock-off of a Ryan or Ford airplane.)

I'll do my research whatever I decide!

Hans the Belushi film is 1941. And it was Jim, James older brother.  A funny war movie based on the Japs attacking or thinking they are attacking Hollywood.  Ends up the sink a fairris wheel. The m3 is in the same film and yes it is on DVD. I own it.

So the Sahara re-make came yesterday, took it home and watched it. All things considered, it was good, lots of good period vehicles, appropriate except for the "German half-track, just like  the orig. One interesting shot in the beginning of a "knocked out" Matilda. Movie was made in Oz, Australian production. Lulubelle is a late M3 Lee, "double I" pattern tracks, no cupola, maybe left over from CBI theatre? LRDG vehicles also shown briefly. Lots of doable dio potential, only one "oops", Lulubelle moving and guns firing with one person aboard. Belushi shouts alot. Gonna have to start thinking on this one, have the old Tamiya Lee in the stash.....

Hans,

I'd like to sign up for this as well.  The lead time is long enough for me to figure out what to do from my four movie choices:

The Lighthorsemen http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093416/

The Thin Red Line http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120863/

Saving Private Ryan

The Great Raid

If I can get ahold of some WWI Aussie troops and some horses, then I KNOW what I'm going to do.

I would like to sign up too. So many possiblities with this one. I am thinking maybe something from 1941, Saving Private Ryan, Black Hawk Down, Apocalypse Now, or Band of Brothers. Good excuse to start watching war movies.

Just asking, would anything from Transformers be ok?

Ummm.... No...Transformers would fall into Sci-Fi... I am letting movies like 1941 in because the setting was WW2, even though it's a comedy.  There's a lot of comedies that were set during wartime, so they'll fly, overall.  Movies like Sgt. Bilko, Independence Day, or Stripes won't since, although they were set on military bases, had military personel as the focus, or had military involvement in the story, they don't have a (historical) wartime setting.

Any of the movies you named are fine though.. Even though Band of Brothers is techically a TV mini-series, rather than a "war movie", it was too good to leave out...

Ok. Just wanted to get that clarified. Right now I am considering either doint the scene in Band of Brothers were Speirs runs through Foy and the German Flak 88 crew are pointing at him or Col. Kilgore's personel UH-1D with the surf boards on the beach after the napalm strike. The scene in Black Hawk Down when the Littlebirds make the straffing run on that consruction site would be cool but challenging.

Hey Hans,

I have been thinking. Is Top Gun ok or not. It isn't really a war movie even though there are some scenes were they are in combat, but it focuses on the Navy's Top Gun School and does have the parts were they are engaged with enemy aircraft. Of course, I would be modeling one of the combat scenes.

After very careful consideration, I decided that: Top Gun is more an action/adventure movie than a war movie, in the classic sense, and you said as much yourself... I also thought about, if F-14s were your main focus, The Final Countdown would work, but I dismissed that one as well, since its focus is time-travel, rather than the Second World War, which puts it into the Sci-Fi category.

So, overall, I'd have to say "no" to both Top Gun and The Final Countdown.  If you were set on getting an F-14 diorama built, I'm sorry.  Those two movies are the only ones I'm aware of that featured Tomcats in combat, but the genre is just this side of wrong...

Sorry, man...

How about fictitious war movies? Movies on the order of "Red Dawn", "By Dawns Early Light", or other WWIII/fictitious type scenarios?

Let's keep it confined to historical wars and conflicts, Stik... If we push out to fictional wars, like WW III, we cross into another genre...    Movies like Red Dawn and such are really not unique in their overall story, there's plenty of Partisan/Guerilla movies that took place in historical wars...

Picked up and watched "1941" last week. Somebody was a "Sahara" fan........

While I think this GB will be a blast and I will be following it, I'm going to have to bow out due to too much going on, both in modelling and other, although a dio of an M3 going through a paint factory would be neat.

.....sound of twisting arm.......OK. Gives me an excuse to watch the movie. It'll be an M3 Lee somewhere, somehow, from "1941". BTW, anyone gotten a good look at that exact movie tank lately? Interesting.....

I know what I'm doing (although the wallet would rather me do something else).  The "just shoot me scene" from Dances with Wolves (the scene where Costner mounts up and rides arms spread in front of the Confederate line).  Haven't done a figure since high school, this ought to be interesting.

I think I will either do a scene from 1941 involving a P-40 or a scene from Pearl Harbor with a Doolittle Raider B-25. From 1941, either the "Let me hear your guns" scene with the crazy colonel, the flying scene with the map, or the part when Belushi crashes and then bails out on the ground. From Pearl Harbor, either the first training take-off (where everyone is on the line) with Doolittle or the carrier take-off.

Hi Raider83,

"Speaking of Raiders of the Lost Ark, I rewatched it the other day, and is that twin-engined tailless German plane real? I doubt it, but I don't know.  Looks cool though"

The wing was designed by Ron Cobb and built as a standing prop. His original design was much bigger, four-engined, an absolute beast! They reduced it to a twin probably for reasons of simple practicality. He also designed a very radical-looking German get fighter, the He-155 if I'm remembering correctly. The technology was projected about eight years too early, but that's Hollywood!

This is a fascinating build, I'll be following it with interest!

Cheers,

Mike/TB379

Hans,

I'm not much at all for dioramas, but I'd love to build the "RAF Aircraft" from Dive Bomber.  Its a heavily-Hollywooded Ryan ST.

Alex

Didnt "Yellow Wings Decals" do a sheet with all the USN aircraft shown in that movie?

Yep, and it is impressive.  Since its USN aircraft only, it doesn't have the 'RAF Aircraft' on it, though.

I haven't found a pic of the aircraft yet, but if you watch the movie (and its a good one), you'll see it.

I don't know if I ever get one done.. Have no plans. But as said, count me in! I will try to figure something out...

So is it a movie that has to be made by a Hollywood company, or just any movie that's listed on imdb?

And does it have to be a diorama?

IMDB... "Hollywood" is just an Americanism for the movie business.  As long as the war movie is listed there, it's a GO...

And does it have to be a diorama?

Yes... It's pretty hard to recreate a scene from a war movie  without scenery, sets, props,  and "actors", wouldn't ya say?Wink [;)]

Hi all,

I've been reading through the posts and this is a really interesting topic. I see no one has yet suggested the classic street scene -- Kelly, Big Joe and Oddball doing the gunfighter walk toward the Tiger outside the bank, from the end of Kelly's Heroes. I've been nursing the dream to build that one for years now. I'm tempted but I don't think I'm suicidal enough to take on a diorama, especially as to do the material justice it would need to be at least 12" x 24" and there's absolutely no place to store/display a project that large at present... But dang! I'm tempted all the same...

Or Tamiya's PBR with a modified crew in a scene from Apocalypse Now, a waterline diorama with foliage and sampans...

Or the collapsing bridge from Force 10 From Navarone, maybe a tank toppling from an up-ending slab of road...

Or General Patton directing traffic at a muddy crossroads, from Patton...

No, I'm insane! Dead [xx(]

Thunderbolt, I measured out a piece for ya and got it to a pretty managable 18 X 6 & 1/2 inches...  Unless you plan on modeling the square and some of the buildings, it'd work pretty good, IMHO...  There's still enough space between the Tiger's gun and our heroes... Especially if you model it during the part where they've walked up and are watching the German Sergeant dismount...

Sign me up!

A friend of mine just commissioned me to build the "Tiger" from Saving Private Ryan (the one that has it's track blown off with the 'sticky bomb').

I'll be mashing Tamiyas T-34/85 and Tiger I, along with photoetch (first time on this scale), and a LOT of scratch building.

My buddy actually OWNS this tank, so I have been in it, on it, and all over it.

It's quite interesting the way they built it. I started a thread in Armor about it with some pictures. Firefox won't let me cut and paste, so just go to Armor and search for "S.P.R. Tiger, inside and out."

I saw it when it was posted.   To be honest, I don't like that Tiger tank.. Nothing personal, but I've always been a realism fan, and having the famous tigertank on those tiny tracks and having it so slim didn't make me happy...  But it's sure waaaaaayyyyy better than ANYTHING else (exept a real tiger) Big Smile [:D]   May I ask what the tiger body is built of? And I start my build for this as soon as Tamiya release their new 1/48 Opel Blitz.. Maybe I do the entire thing and buy two Opels and one Kubel... but we'll see Cool [8D]

You may ask!

LOL

It is mostly sheet metal, with some plywood. The engine grates are wood. Overall, the build quality on it is pretty good. While I do agree that it is incredibly obvious to folks like us, to the general populace, it's a pretty good rendition. Hey, at least they didn't take a U.S. piece from 1967, slap German markings on it, and hope no one noticed! LOL

Alright Hans, put me down. The tank should be done in a few says (I'm already prepping for paint, and I started last night!) so that leaves the base to be done. I'll post pics of the build. I was gonna do the part where the Tiger under the hay slowly turns the barrel at the Shermans in Operation Marketgarden, British Assisted Attack. I might also try using forced perspective on a 1/35th soldier and make him looking across the street. I think it was bull. Also, I already asked this before but how do I make hay? Anyone got any comments? Thanks Hans, I owe you one!Big Smile [:D] (If I ever lead a GB you can sign up late...Whistling [:-^])

sorry that it took a while to reply. Huxy, Thanks for the tips. When I painted the camo, I forgot to take out my high-flow tip, thus spattering ran amok. Also, i painted the block like a raw sienna (I think) and then I washed it with burnt umber (again, I think) oils to get a better variation in color. Some got brushed onto the armor plate. Just fixed last night. Thanks for the tips and I'll add more pics when I begin on the dio.

Finally decided on the build... A Shadow Box using forced perspective of Stachel's crash-landing in the Phalz D III...  I've just received the 1/48th Eduard Phalz and a 1/72 scale Dr 1 from the "Red Baron" show car kit will stand in for "the Son of a B*tch that almost got me killed today" Dr1 that waggles its wings at the downed and thoroughly p*ssed-off and wounded Stachel (The metrosexual pilot figure from the Revell 1/28th Dr1)in the foreground...

I started with the 1/72 Dr1.. I've opened the cockpit and assembled the plane, sans engine and gear at this point, and am searching for a suitable 1/72 pilot... ( I have none in the parts box, so it gives me a reason to go to the LHS and pick through some 1/72 scale kits, although I don't care for the scale)

I picked up some lumber this morning and will start cutting the base and shadow box parts later this weekend.

Hey! Great! I wanted to do the same thing with my tiger dio. I wanted a view over the shoulder of a crouching G.I. (Bull) looking across a street at the tank. Could you give me any tips on how to do that?

Sure... You need to mix scales... Cut a piece of cardboard for the base, add another for the opening.  Tape them up into a 90 degree angle and, looking through the opening, put "Bull" in the foreground at about 6 inches inside the the front wall, the Tiger in the back ground and keep moving the Tiger around until it looks like the scale distance you want.. Then mark and measure.  Do the same thing with anything else you need back there... Keep track of what goes where and how far they are away from the front wall...

You may have to elevate the bacground a bit, so try some different-sized blocks in the back under the base, changing the angle of the base until it looks right to you...

Once you know where everything's going to go, you'll have your depth demension and you can  just measure out a base and cut the lumber for the base to put your groundwork on... I recommend 1/4-inch plywood, and don't skimp on quality... The base has to able to slide in and out of your case like a drawer...

Thanks for the tips! Any ideas on how to do the sky background above the house? Should I use a narrow slit for a view hole? Or keep it a little on the open side?

For a sunny day around the 1100-1300 time-frame, I'd start with a piece of sky-blue posterboard, airbrush some clouds, and keep the vanishing-point behind the structures... Keep in mind that you'll have to curve the background from the sides as well.. You don't want the sides meeting the rear at a right angle... A nice, sweeping curve is best..

As for your viewing window, it depandes on how wide your base is...  My rule of thumb is to keep it smaller than the width of the base by about two inches and square in shape... The front edge of the base should be below the window's bottom edge as well...

Once you get the base done and inserted into the box, you can experiment with viewing window-sizes until you get one that offers the maximum view without revealing any lighting, wires, or edges, or allowing the viewer to actually see the distance from the foreground model to background model at a side angle..

If my scene measured 12" x 12" at the front, I'd likely do the window at about 6 "x 4"... Building a reveal will help restrict the angle more, allowing your viewers to see only what you want them to see... But play around with the opening sizes first... Just tape some printer paper together to fit the front and cut different-sized openings until you get the opening size you want...

Just don't make a slit... Ever..

Also, plan for your lighting as well... You're going to need space under the dio base for the transformer and wiring junctions and plan some space up top too for the main lights and the mini spot & fill lights... If you're making a sunny day, or overcast, morning, evening, all that comes into play, as well as your main lighting, plus fill-lights to get rid of shadows in the wrong place.. If it's a sunny day or high overcast, you "sky" will be different colors, and your lighting will change as well...

I wish that FSM would allow attachments to a post uploaded directly from the hard drive rather than the current policy though...

Yeah, I was booted from Photobucket. Apparently someone found offense with my reenactment pictures.

Question is, which code do I use with Image Shack? there are about 10 of them!

Just use the url address... I open the picture then I right-click on "Properties", then copy the url address, then paste that in the image window that you open here with that little "tree" icon... Just make sure you backspace out the "http://" stuff that appears in it before you paste the url in there... It's already in the address you copied...

Here are a couple other shots...larger this time:

By the way, I started a WIP thread on this one in the Armor Forum.

Thank you very much, Huxy. This is my first real diorama, so it has been tough going. I think my favorite part so far is the door to the balcony! LOL. I was playing around with techniques, and tried something new to get wood grain.

In this case, I brushed on a brown base coat, then set some slightly darker brown out for a while til it got nice and goopy, then brushed that on with a stiff bristle brush. After that I did a was with some actual wood stain. I think it came out rather convincingly.

Here ya go, Huxy!

First off, please excuse the quality of the pictures, as my camera doesn't do close focus very well (actually, it doesn't do many things very well).

First, the door, fresh off the Sprue. A little nip here and there, and some minor cleanup needed.

I taped it to a spare piece of evergreen stock for ease of handling. I am only doing one side of it for my little demo here.

First things first. I layed on a base coat with a brush (I used Testors 'Wood' enamel), taking care to brush in the direction that the wood grain would be (remember, on the horizontal elements of the door, the wood grain would also be horizontal.

In front of the door I have a container with a small puddle of Testors "Leather' enamel. I put that in there before I applied the base coat so it would sit for a while and start to thicken up and get goopy as the base coat dried.

After the base coat has dried long enough to be worked with other paints, I used a basic drybrushing technique with the 'Leather', again following the grain of the "wood". Letting the paint thicken up, and using a stiff bristle brush helps to add more "grain" to the door.

Allow that to dry for about an hour.

Last step is to use actual wood stain. For this one I used Minwax Wood Finish #2750, Jacobean, because it is darker than the previous 2 coats. Just like last time, I used a stiff bristle brush, drybrushed, and followed the grain of the 'wood'.

What you end up with is a pretty passable stained wood door that looks like it has seen a few years of use. Only thing left to do is to paint the brass fixtures, and add the door handle and hinges.

Hope this helps.

One more thing... Depending on the condition of the building, I will sometimes do a Matt clear sealer on the outside of the door, and a semi-gloss sealer on the inside of the door, to show that the shellac on the exterior side has been worn off by the weather.

Well, it's back to the drawing board for me as procrastination bit me in the butt.  Went to order my figure from Squadron and it's no longer available.  Can't remember the name of the company that made it to check other sites.  Back to the DVD player.

Got a new camera, so I thought i would put up a better image of the final product. I still haven't put the Matt coat on, so it looks a bit shiny.

Made some progress on the diorama base yesterday. It just served to show mw how much more work I actually need to do to get it to resemble anything from the film! So I am still calling this the 'beginning stages'.

The buildings copper drain pipe. Poly scale copper, testors flat green, and testors interior green, with a  poly scale grimy black wash. Woodland scenics Turf for moss.

The slow buildup of small rubble and mud at the base of the building. This will be mostly covered with larger debris and wood.

A slightly out of focus shot from above.

Tips, comments and criticism are always welcome!

Not much advancement to report. Haven't had the time I would like to work on it lately. All I have really done is to build up the base to put my rubble and debris on a little.

This has been accomplished with a mixture of water, woodland scenics scenic glue, and seveal colors of Woodland Scenics Ballast. Also added to the mix has been soil that was sent to me by a friend who lives in the Normandy region of France. I just thought that it would be a cool addition.

I am considering entering this into the AMPS 2009 show, since it is in my State this year. I don't know, though. I have never entered a competition before. I'll most likely chicken out.

Dayum, Irish... Lookin' good...

Not much to report on my end... I'm not happy with the Phalz since I tried a hand-painted lozenge camo (Stachel's Phalz was completely covered in the Lozenge Pattern)... I did it on the underside though, so I won't have to remove it (Stachel's crash-landing ripped the gear off the Phalz)...

Th' Baron's tripe is about done tho.. Just not that much to see in 1/72 scale, especially with such a small plane as the DR 1 was... I'm thinking about motorizing the DR1 though, have a rod run through the engine front, that will allow me add the "wing-waggle" salute to Stachel from MvR.. BUT.. I run into the conflict of moving models pared with everythig else being stationary... UNLESS, I think of a way to animate the smoke & flame from Stachel's Phalz...  Kinda like the old Hamm's Beer signs with the smoke from the campfire...

That, and I don't think it would go over well at a show. People get a little testy when their show models get melted.

As for my entry, it's a combination of not having mych time to work on it, and the fact that it is currently going through major surgery. Looking at the hull sitting on the chassis, I realized that not only is the hull too short, but the roadwheels where set in too far. Off comes the suspension, lower hull is currently getting boxed to widen it, then I get into lengthening the upper hull.

This one is getting more and more difficult by the day! I'll have some pictures soon.

Irish, she is coming along quite nicely!

As for me, I have been nickle and diming one idea along, the one from Bridge Too Far... Lets just say this one will take far longer than the deadline for the group build here. But now that I have begun, I will CM on it until completed...

But for the actual GB here, I am gonna go with a Longest Day scene.

Is this group build still alive???

There just doesn't seem to be anyone really interested in it.

As for my SPR scene, I haven't gotten much done on it. Life has gotten in the way a bit. I am about 3 days from being a Daddy, so that kinda takes priority right now.

I was just thinking about this build. I was just going over some reference images for my M3 and decided to look at what was going on here.

While giving a far off end date gives people lots of time it also leads to procrastination (case in point -me!).

I'll have some images to post of my 'Lulubelle' by this Sunday night. Still need to find a 1/35 Bogey.

I may have screwed up by giving so much time, but again, since it's a diorama GB, it'll naturally be a lot slower, and with fewer participants.... I'm still working on mine, and it's not all that interesting yet, since I'm not doing anything outside building the actual models yet.. Once I have those complete and start on the shadow box, then I'll post WIP-pics.. It's forced-perspective, so it's largely useless to take pictures of the models themselves until I start to position them, plus they're not all that much to look at yet, since I'm only painting what will be seen from the viewing window, lol...

Real life stinks, doesn't it?

I've done little more and I've yet to take pics what I do have. I want to get the tank itself to a show the end of this September to act as another motivator to get myself moving on it. I've got to stop vegging out at night and start on the bogies. I've got the DVD for 'Saraha' and I still trying to decide what scene to model. At the least, I'll need to get 3 US tanker figures.

Is anyone else out there struggling for this build?

Not struggling, no... I've got the Phalz out of the box and some cockpit work down, and the Dr1 is about done 'cept decals and some touch-up painting.  The Stachel figure's going to take the longest I think, since the only figure I got to use is the 1/28th scale metrosexual pilot from Revell's Dr1 kit.. I've gone and chopped him up and put him back togethr s couple different times and still am not satisfied with the pose, so...

I may end up doing the whole figure from scratch, something I've never done and am NOT wanting to do...

Sure, provided it's a diorama... What I mean by that is, if it's just a model on a landscaped base, not doing anything, then it doesn't really fall into the diorama category.  If say, "Kraut Killer" is depicted during the scene where it's run out of gas and Sully gets knocked on his duff by the GI, or the "When are they gonna let us fight?" scene, or perhaps the opening scene of "Sahara" when Sergeant Gunn, Hoyle, and Waco are desparately tryin' to get "this cement-mixer running" during the artillery barrage then, yeah...

NUTS!  No, I didn't decide to do a scene from "The Battle of the Bulge"... My Phalz D III has become a casualty of war with my new kitten... He decided that polystyrene in general and German aircraft in particular make fine chew-toys and has destroyed the upper wing beyond repair...  That said, I'm back at Square One here...

While I ponder over the whether the cat stays or becomes a fajita, I'll get back to y'all with another plan... P-A-L-N, PLAN!

I swear I'm still in this!

Kid's are in school and though I got knocked out of entering to competitions for September and October, I aim to get my 'Bettie Lou" in for a late September show in Poughkeepsie. The theme - "Show Business".

Han's, don't cook the cat, yet. From experience, I've learned to put all materials away after working on it -or at lease build in a cat free space.

Hans: I am going to have to bow out of this one. My summer was very busy and I am way over committed on the GBs right now. Plus, I don't have the resources right now to do the dio I had planned on doing from "1941". I just don't think I could pull it off.
