Strategic Air Command (SAC) Group Build II

small update:

I joined this GB a few weeks back with a cross-over build that I just completed, an Italeri B-58A Hustler covered mostly with household aluminum foil.  This was my second effort at foil.  I'd say the results are a slight improvement given the larger kit to work with (the first effort was a 1/144 B-47 Stratojet).

I just finished a bad guy for SAC for another group build.

Soviet M-50 A Bounder, an Amodel kit in 1/72 scale finished in Alclad 2

The flying wing is next.

It is not too late. The original hosts are off, either guarding our southern border or locked in a basement in Wyoming. Anyhow, it's still active and we would welcome new pardner's, pardner.

What do you have in mind? And welcome aboard. I guess it's kind of a Co-op now, but it's a great subject.

And watching "Strategic Air Command" will get you bonus points!

Just joined this group build today.  Thanks for allowing me at such a late date.  I completed this 1/48 B-58 Hustler for the Natural Metal Finish Group Build and she was finished today.  She is covered with household foil, clear coated with Future Floor Wax.  She was built OOB with the exception of the aftermarket Exhaust Cans and Elevons.  I also added some lead weight to the nose.

I am laid up with a bad back, I had surgery in Feb and at the end of the month I have to have #4 done, I think that I may be permently retired from my trade. Its not been fun. But I get to build models all the time.

I've actually just finished and will post this evening, but thanks for getting back to me. My F-82 has sustantial amounts of the airframe painted SAC sash color.

Based on some photos, I matched it to a Testors Railroad color, Great Northern Big Sky Blue. it looks better than this, but here's the chip:

Here's my first entry to the SAC II GB. First of all, let's pray for Roger wherever he may be, that he's safe. He's always been the Spike around these GB's, lovable.

The F-82-F Twin Mustang, prime bomber escort until the F-84 was operational.

This is the Monogram kit in 1/72 strictly OOB. I worked a while to find the Superscale decal set for this black twin. It turned out to be oatmeal, so I painted tails and tips with Great Northern Big Sky Blue and did all the marks with individual stars and stripe decals from Fantasy Films in the UK, a great outfit BTW.

Very nice work on the F-82.  The SAC "Milky Way" sash was several different shades of blue, depending on who painted it when and how long it had sat out in the strong sun light.  I have seen them everywhere from light sky blue to dark royal blue.  USAF aircraft during about the first 5 years of my USAF career were still NMF and the SAC planes had the sash and shield.  The late 60s and early 70s saw the transition to camouflage finishes and low visibility markings.

I think the nadir of that kit is the landing gear, both in how it's set up and in these big open caverns. But hey, we're here to help. Piccys please and we'll fix it.

By the way I repainted the twin mustang. My photos showed way too much silvering, all better now. pics soon.

Bondo, the F82 looks great !  Never heard much about them, whats the set up ?

Two cockpits ?  Two sets of controls ?  Two pilots ?

Bondoman A very well done F-82 !!!! The pilot figure really adds to the model, the helmet is outstanding.

HvH mentioned that too. Word of warning- the buzz number is bogus. The decals that came with the SAC scheme, aftermarket from Superscale, were old and fell apart. I had to use the monogram ones, which also have a white background that's out of register.

 Thanks much for the compliments. This is an unusual subject for sure. Paul, the righthand guy was the Radar Operator. He had basic flight controls. It's primary advantage was range. Armament is four .50's in thecenter wing, plus a christams tree launch rack on each outboard pylon with 5 FFAR rockets each.

Yes I did, took planty of photos of the two planing I'm working now.  B-52D, and B-36.  I took pictures of the bomb bay of the 52, they turned out bad, 36 bombay turned out ok.

I'm going to call this BUFF done.  I may revisit later to brush some pastels along the panel lines, but I'm basically sick of it and want to move on.  Decals were shot, I hit them with some microscale liquid film, and once I put them on, some polyscale softner helped to dissolve the carrier film.  I didnt sand the tyres down, as I havent ruled out hanging this one from the ceiling.

Congrats, Paul. That looks really swell. That model is a real chore, you are to be applauded for seeing it through. I've already thrown mine away about a year after I finished it, it just took up so much space. Very nice. Ikar1 would dig it.

FMM 6 bottles of Alclad went on my 'maker! But the magnesium sections look darn sweet.
