Regia Aeronautica GB II (06/15/09 to 06/15/10)

Alright Sarge is back. Now we can officially start all over agian. We'll wait for you to stop playing with all of thoses blue and gray thingies. I will be starting soon. I am finishing My Fokker and believe it or not I have not one other model even started so I'm free as a bird with a 100% clear work bench. Its going to be a great summer!

Great score there, Bondomiester. Im going to Duxford flying legends at the weekend, the last time i went they had half a dozen of those Rapide beasties. Well cool. As for the Breda, thats just too cool for school. Im freally looking forward to seeing that built. I knew an Irish Girl called Breda.... I wonder if she ended up have loads of kids?

Sir Aaron of Nutzville, its great to have you back big boy. The place seems rather quiet when your not around. Sounds like you had a great score too. Being sent home from work. Bonus. ts a bit like a breakdown on the busses for me. I get to miss an hour hear and there. And busses break down all the time LOL. shame.

Oh my sincereset of apologies for my absence here. I have had a greuling work schedule as of lately which as my wife says is better than the alternative.  By sheer luck tonight I went to work and 37 minutes later was sent home due to a lack of manpower. A full days pay for a midnight drive and to make a pot of coffee at work was an odd thing that doesn't happen too often but for the fluke to happen just prior to my off days was a happy coincidence. Especially after 4 days and nights of maximum shifts allowed by law.  I needed the break!

 Thankfully there is a new law in July  that limits us to only 276 hours a month. Gee thanks. Do the math and it seems to me that is one long work week. 276 divid by 4 is 69 hours a week.  Um 5 days of 12 hour shifts is 60 hours?  Wow that is 9 hours to spare?  Makes me tired thinking about it.

Anyways! Frank can finish his 109 now and that is always a treat.

Bondo  has wonderful new examples of seldom modeled birds and kits. If it looks half as good as his Floater it will surely be an object of envy.  Not sure why my e-mail had a pic of the Destroyer Shaw and Battleship Pennsylvania in the dry dock at pearlharbor mislabled but things look ok here!

Soul Crusher been watching you very carefully between sips of caffinated beverage!  The G55 is a cool scheme. I my try a G 55 as well. The old Smer kit again just to keep you on your toes. Your other stuff I have seen in the other GB's really are sharp work!  109's KOTAII  extc seems like you got it going on in a good way!

 Guy? well  You know I have been hooked on the FAA stuff but I shall try my best to get a few projects in here as this GB is just to good to ignore for long. Only got 3 more to finish and I am done with 1940 FAA kits and can go to 1941... was a long war it was for England. I should show my Gladiator here as it was a Malta defender and was the nemesis of many the birds we see here!

In the middle the very fine CMR (Planet) Breda Ba. 44 that arrived today. On the right, the Airfix/ Heller Dragon Rapide in both kit and complete form.

The resemblance is very slight apart from the Gypsy engine nacelles with the wheel boots. Otherwise it's a different wing shape, different fuse,.... why do I care you ask?

Because there are lies, I tell you, lies!!!, on the www that the Breda is a license built Dragon. Nothing could be further than the truth.

And I'm happy for that because I do not like repetition.

A wonderful resin kit, beautiful castings, nice decals and vac canopy parts. The Heller kit will donate it's props and for that we are grateful. Prego!

OBTW over on the left is a Thank You card from the eBay seller. Manners live, gentlemen, esp. in the Regia!

Mike, the 109 is looking groovy mate. I love the extra detail that your putting in. Really giving me the itch to get cracking on the Veltro. My main prob at the mo is im working all the time. My next day off is Tuesday!!! Yes im  working on a sunday...BOOOOOO.

Out of interest, what did you use to fill the holes in the wing and the fuz. My plan was going to be styrene discs and superglue with maybe a splurge of filler to finish.

Thanks for the input Mike. The book I found this color plate in a book that is not exactly the bible when it comes to 109's but it does have several pics in it that I have never seen and some interesting color profiles. This one caught my eye because the Fiat G 55 I am building has the decals for the unit emblem and all of the ANR insignias. I was 99% sure the colors used in the drawings were wrong. I have never seen a G-6 painted in those colors. I think you are correct about the colors most likely being 74/75/76. I have some other pics of G-4's that were turned over to the Italians and I think I will treat this kit the same way. Like you said overpainting of the crosses with gray. First I am going to go a few rounds with the Classic Airframes G 55. Not one of thier better kits but the camo pattern is really cool so I will put up with the shortcomings of the kit just so I can lay down some really cool paint

Looks like you are really working that kit over with the putty and styrene Mike. Looking foward to seeing more.

SC- When the ANR received Bf 109's they almost always left them in the original RLM colors.  Since that's a G-6, 99% likely it would be the standard 74/75/76.  In 1943, the ANR would usually remove all or most of the German insignia, usually overpainting them in Grigio Azzurro Chiaro (Blue Gray).  As 1944 progressed this practice was scaled back somewhat, the swastika would be removed and sometimes the Balkankreuz on the upper wing would be sprayed over and replaced with Italian insignia.  The fuselage and lower wing Balkankreuz were usually left intact.  Also note that the profile may not be correct IRT flag placement.  The flag was almost always forward of the tactical number, usually underneath the aft part of the cockpit.  This could be correct but I'd do some research first to be on the safe side.  A lot of the color profiles floating around the internet are just full of errors.

OK, I have been working on this one sporadically.  Was in Japan for a week and getting some things corrected on this beast turned out to be more of a project than I thought!

Lower Wing: Since this guy does double duty as a pre-assembled "collectable" it has some ugly holes where some poor, underpaid guy in China has to screw it together.  Obviously this doesn't work out for me so these require filling and sanding.  The wheel wells are probably the weakest part of the kit, detail is non-existent.  I lined the wheel bay with .010" sheet styrene and the strut bay with lead foil.  The strut stowage area should have four oblong ovals (lightening holes), I tried a couple of methods to do these but none were satisfactory so it will remain "as-is".  Next time I'll try a resin insert for this.

The landing and radiator flaps will be re-positioned for a more natural look.  The landing flaps were completely cut off and some 1/2 round oval stock was glued on then filled and sanded.  The upper wheel bays received some plastic stock to simulate the the ribbing.

The wing radiators also needed some help, I cast these intake screens myself to insert into the openings.

The screw holes in the fuselage were a real bugger to get filled in right, I'm not sure that they're perfect but I'm sick of messing with them at this point.

Should have some more pics up soon, getting ready to do some painting...

Where is Sarge? If he does not show up soon we migh have to list him as AWOL! Finished my Hispano Ha-1112 tonight so I will be cutting sprue on the Fiat G55 soon! I can see lots of superglue and swearing for me in the near future!

Guy I want to see you working some majic on that Macchi C202 soon. Really loooking foward to seeing you bring that kit to life.

Dave, that looks like a stunner for sure. Deffo a flying Greenhouse. Just imagine how hot it would get in there.

Flying greenhouses it is Bill.  I used Model Master Enamels as that was all I could find with the Italian Colours.  Colours were Italian Sand (2110) and Italian Olive Green (2112).

Frank, badge looks great!!!!! I'd rather have dinner with Sophia Loren though!!! Hope to get in on this build!!!! Will see how I go with the others.

Guy- Nice to see another 21st CT model in the GB, I'm hoping to get some pics up this weekend.

Bondo and Dave- Cool subjects, the ANR had some "quirky" aircraft, those should be great additions to your collection.  Looking forward to seeing them finished!

Now I was looking through these pages and I think that your Torpedo Fighter has the same camo style I need for the little Breda. Very well done, too. Have you ever looked at the Stormo magazine site? Or can you identify it? What colors did you use?

Ok now I have a photobucket question for anyone willing to help me out. I have collected enough GB badges that they do'nt fit in my signature line anymore. I see all of you people with a slideshow displaying all of the GB badges and it looks very tidy. I have spent the last two hours trying to figure out how to put the slide show in my signature lie but I can not get it to work. I posted it but only the first image appeared and it would not change. Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong?

Hey Guy I was just thinking. Do we need a new GB badge? It could be the same one with just the Roman numeral II in the pic just so everyone knows. What do you think? And yes you need to start building that Macchi straight away even if it is on the kitchen table. You will report for duty or you will be pressed into service! I have a plan. I may start the 21st CT veltro from a tray on my lap. Ill try to keep it OOB and concentrate on the painting and weathering. Do you know, im getting the modelling twitch.
