I managed to throw some primer on the SM79 and I wasn't too happy with the flaws that showed up. I decided that I didn't want to do any more fixin' so I painted the fuselage band and threw some color on the bottom.

The color I used is FS36231 (dark gull gray) which is what the STORMO website said to use and I figured they're the experts. The grey looks a little too dark to me.

What are your thoughts?

Dave the 311 came out great. All of that glass would have drove me nuts! It is always nice to see subjects that are not done as often. Well doneThumbs Up [tup]

Guy that Piaggio is a real cracker! I was not aware Special Hobby made that kit. I was just watching a show about the history of stragitic bombing and they talked a little bit about it. They said if Italy could have mass produced them they would have been just as effective as the B-17 or Lanc's. The also said it was mechanicly a very reliable plane. Looking forward to seeing you work your majic on it. That last smiley with the hat on and the botttle in his hand kind of reminds me of you in your birthday video you posted hereBig Smile [:D]

Jeremy I am not really sure about dark gull grey. I have it in my paint stash along with light gull gray. I prefer the light gull gray myself but that is not to say the light gull gray is a better match it is just what looked better to my eye. Than again that particular plane could have had the underside painted a darker gray. The info on Stormo is usally pretty good so I would go with it.

Dave that is yet another beautiful and inspiring build to see. It turned out crazy good! Bow [bow]

Capt Bondo!  It looks like you chopped it clean in two? Very different build sequence to be certain, is that an all resin kit?  Was there much warping?

Jeremy I'd say the gray looks ok by me? You'll be done before you know it?

It's an all-resin kit. The fit is beautiful, although the pieces are each only a couple of inches long. The interior, wheels, props and exhausts are injection molded Airfix items from another kit (and a/c type).

If you look at the pic you'll see i had to pin the lowere wings on to make sure they didn't flex and crack later, and the only way I could figure to get the pin holes aligned right was to tack the wings on and then drill from inside.. Green is not the final color coat.

Its nice to see great minds think alike there Bondo! I have build several sort run kits in the same exact manor. When the wings are a butt type fit I always  drill out the fuselage where the wing mounts then attach tabs and glue it to the fuselage halves before i glue the fuselage together. It is much easier to line the wing up and get a good fuselage to wing fit this way but the addition of the tabs really add strength in 1/48 scale. I whish I hade some pics because it does look really weird to have the wings attached to the fuselage halves before they are glued together. With the solid tailplanes I usally insert pins in them and drill coresponding holes in the fuselage.

Hey ho, me again. Its been my day off today so ive managed to get a fair bit done. 1st up the green was squirted,

then i was ready to spray the 1st part of the 'Poached eggs' and i realised that the gun troughs needed opening out. Doh! Out with the dremel,

It cleaned up a lot better than it looks in the picture. So it was on with the yellow,

then the 'Yolk',

then a good squirt of future and then decals. I read that some people leave future for 48hrs sometimes. This seems crazy to me. I leave it on for about an hour. Then its ready for decals. No probs yet, so ill keep going this way i reckon. Also, I use Tamiya acrylics with Tamiya Laquer thinners. This combo is superb allowing me to mask the coat after as little as 10 minutes between coats. Anyhoo, heres what she looks like now,

Just got a few fiddlys to finish up. I may have it done tomorrow if im lucky but im off to the flicks with Big E (Another day off) to see Inglorious Basterds.

WOW YOU MOVE FAST GUY!!!  Did you freehand all the eggs?  Awesome job!!! Bow [bow]Bow [bow]Bow [bow]

As for leaving future to dry before decaling if you have to use any kind of solvent to get your decals to snuggle down the solvent can sometimes react with the future leaving a whitish kind of residue.  Letting the future cure first avoids this problem.

I expect a full report on the flic (please - this is NOT homework) !!!

Cheers Dave, but really its not that quick...for me anyhoo. For Frank, its lightspeed. Need i remind you about the spinner Whistling [:-^]

As for the Solvent issue. I used both Micro set and Sol. They both leave a whitish residue but this can be wiped off with a little water on a paper towel. All cool beans , i might add.

Full and detailed review presented tomorrow. Quinten Tarrantino is a God in my eyes, so i fear it may be a little biased LOL.

Guy you are ace and I wish I was your son! That is going to be another outstanding build to be certain!

Well I finally had to take time off work. Doctors orders I am afraid. I haven't slept right in about 2 months and was just wearing a bit to thin. Have to undergo a mess of test to se if I need surgery but that word won't be decided until the end of the month.  So in the meantime I guess I can build stuff!

Worrking some more on the Italian Cruiser today.

Slowly coming together but its progress I say!  Will be starting the fine tuning and detail stuff tomorrow after a good nights sleep. ( If I am lucky) At least now I can take the medicine that I had to pass on before due to the job.

The Cruisers looking good Sarge. Take it easy there for a while. I know all about not sleeping. If you notice many of my post are after 12 EST. So you had the medicine but it said do not operate heavy machinery if you are taking this? I guess a 100 ton freigh train qualifies as heavy machinery! Take care of yourself there or I will have Guy send you some winegum as punishment! Does this mean we get to have you around here more now?Smile [:)]

Ha! Thanks fellows. AT least until the end of the month I should be grounded to the bench.  There are worse fates

SC! 100 ton is purdy light. The small engines are 750,000 lbs with out sand.  One loaded coal car is 120 tons and a whole coal train is about 110 of those cars long. About 15,000 plus tons at 55 MPH what a rush!

The Bradley tanks were only 32 tons and the Abrams around 72 tons. But they had nice guns!  Put some guns on the Locomotive and I'd be right at home! But alas all I can do is ring the bell and toot the whistle. Go forward and backward. Heck Like Guy sez they dont even trust me enough to let me steer. But always remember with trains it is not how fast you can go but how fast you can stop!

I wondered what that stuff was doing there! Wine gum that is? Guy said that is a new skone flavor. I'd better check with Bondo as it's a rum thing and he'd be the one to ask!

Aaron, glad to hear you got some time off finally!!!!!! Hope all will be well!!! Relaxing at the bench is a good vacation to me!!! Seriously, take her easy and pull the throttle back!Thumbs Up [tup] The floaty thing is looking very sharp!! Looking forward to more pics!!

OI you slugs, I detect a bit of Brit bashing....Scone flavoured Wine gums. How very dare you LOL.

Aaron, I hope your feeling better soon, my friend. Hopefully the Docs will get to the bottom of it soon...that is unless it is to do with your bottom. Nasty. As Richie says, its all good though if it mean you can be around a little more. We miss you know. As for the Cruiser, shes looking fantastic. I love the paint scheme. The disruptive camo looks very proper.

Im glad you liked the Macchi sofar. Its finished now, im just waiting for the last touchups to dry then ill post up a few picceroonies. Jolly good old beans, Pip Pip.

Oh wheres SpongeBondo with the answer to his question. What have Godfather and Dr Strangelove have in common? Burgered if i know.

Sterling Hayden played Captain McCluskey in the former and General Jack D. Ripper, CO of Burpleson AFB in the latter.

General Jack D. Ripper: I shouldn't tell you this, Mandrake, but you're a good officer and you've a right to know. It looks like we're in a shooting war.

As promised, the paints dry and here she is,

I reckon it was a cracking kit. Not too many hassles. The U/C spat thingys are a bit tricky but apart from that, i highly recommend it.

As for my next kit, im afraid its got to be the Corsair for the war in the pacific. I know, A corsair!! Me with a bent wingy thing. My next RA kit....mmm....the Piaggio has the edge,

Yey, Bondo's here  MegaphoneThe eggy doo dahs, do have 2 colours. They are sort of wrotten eggs. By the spat thingys i mean the gear doors. There arnt any location pins so you have to lay the UC flat and then try to get the doors in the right position using Superglue as the fixings are resin. So its sort of get it right 1st time or your in the doo doo, so to speak.

As for the homework, i missed your reply, i must have been posting.

Cheers, you diamond,

Very well done Guy. The fried eggs look great. I have to knock you a bit for the quality of the photos though. When you get a chance we want some better pics! I guess if you have to go build one of those bent wing thingies that Frank likes we'll have to let you go off to play for a bit. Anyway we got old Sarge back now so we'll be ok for now. I actually started working on the G-55 last night. I managed to get the wheel wells painted and the prop. I also touched up the cockpit to prepare for the canopy installation. I'm going to get the landing gear on tonight and paint up the cannons barrel details. Pics soon.

Guy - Magnificent build! She looks ready for action! Thumbs Up [tup]

SC - I've been waiting patiently to see the finished G-55 and I'm sure it will be a beauty!

Aaron - That's a cool ship... yes with a "p". Wink [;)] I have a few 1/700 to be built but after cracking the box on one of them, I just don't have much patience for them.

Aaron... off topic here. I didn't realize you were an engineer(?). You may not find this interesting because you do it for a living but... My Uncle Mike is a huge railfan and I used to tag along with him to do train watching. On his birthday in 1996 we went down to Palmer, MA to a spot where the Conrail, Amtrak and Mass Central lines converged. It just so happened that a Mass Central F7 in an Alaska scheme pulled up and stopped. The engineer, obviously seeing us with cameras and giggling with joy, poked his head out of the cab and asked us if we wanted a ride. Heck yeah! We climbed aboard and off we went pushing a load of container flats(?). When my Uncle Mike told the engineer, Jim, that it was the best birthday present ever, Jim said "well then... why don't you take over?". He showed my uncle how to operate the beast and a great time was had by all. Definitely an amazing experience for me and my uncle.

Here's the beast in all her beauty.

Here is engineer Jim (right) showing my uncle how to operate the brakes... LOUD!

And here is yours truly at the tender young age of 20yrs going along for the ride.

Sorry to be so far off topic fellas. Blush [:I]

SM79 progress... Thumbs Up [tup]

After some broken airbrush, compressor and moisture trap woes I finally got the base color on tonight. Not much to see but things are starting to happen. Hopefully by this weekend I can get some tiger stripey things on her and start on the engines and cowls. I just don't work as fast as Guy so maybe a couple more weeks till she's finished.

Boy... I've been rambling like an Italian woman trying to catch up! Big Smile [:D]

Most importantly, look at this and linkies.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rO-GsVWw6ZA

The first link to the 4449 shows that a steamer'll out run anything, mostly because it weighs a lot. The GS-5/7's and she's a -7 with timken bearings, check in at about 250,000 lbs. You see though she has a second tender, another 25,000 lbs of water. SP ran on oil all over the system except for the one branch in NM.

I think that EMD in the first viddie is a FP9. Covered wagons in the Black Widow scheme.

In the second viddie there's a "Cascade" or "Shasta" car right behind the diesel, with the big picture windows.

In the third, what fool would wear shorts on the seatbox of a locomotive, much less a steamer. Just my My 2 cents [2c]

Great vids Bill!!!!!!!! I have known for quite some time that a steamer, pound for pound can pull more than a diesel!!! Or tear it's heart out trying!! Have read several times that no one would ever leave a Hiawatha Atlantic in full throttle, with 300psi boiler pressure, it had endless power and would make the trip from New York to Chicago in a few hours at an average speed of 90mph.

Sign - Off Topic!! [#offtopic] Nonesense! I beleieve all pics and postings have been made with accordance to the Rules with perhaps the exception of Guy's builds! Man that looks sweet Guy! You did it with an open pit which I wasn't expecting and the camo turned out great? Is there any history of those closed canopy birds in combat or was it the one rejected cuz the pilots wanted the open air feel still? Oh if if I could reach that far I'd give ya a brit bashing just to slow you down!   I still have to add it and your Fiat to page 1. I'm a slacker I know!

Jeremy I have posted pics around from work before but I can't find the threads in a search so I will send you a copy in a PM of some work pics I have shown here before. A lot of fellows on the forum are into trains as well so once apon a time I had a thread where I posted engine pics but dern if I can remember what I called it?
