Totally Awesome Eighties GB-- Re-Animated!
Posted by cdclukey on Thursday, February 12, 2009 11:10 PM

Note: Do to a number of commitments and complications I won't bore you with (including the birth of my new daughter!) I dropped the ball on hosting this group build. Granted, a lot of things are more important than modeling, but I could have at least kept up with the build, even if I wasn't able to make it to my bench. Because other forum members stepped up and kept posting while I was gone, we're going to extend the deadline on this one and take new participants. I've made some edits to the rules, so check them out below before posting.

I've been gazing at the '87 T-Bird Turbo Coupe from Revell that my son gave me for Christmas and it occurred to me that a group build honoring the 1980s would be a lot of fun. So, let's keep it simple:

1. Any subject, as long as it was active in the Eighties. If it's a subject that served for many years (such as an F-4) it should be marked as it appeared during the Eighties.

2. Any aftermarket or scratchbuilt stuff is fine.

3. Crossovers are fine, and so are kits you've already started as long as they're less than 50% finished.

4. Build period is from right now until 31 Dec 2010.

5. Every participant must post at least one reason the Eighties were totally awesome to the max!

6. Every participant must have fun!

I'll start off:

The Eighties were awesome because they're the decade where I got my first computer, my first car and my first girlfriend. I also joined my beloved Air Force during the Eighties.

Roll call:

cdclukey-- Revell 1/24 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe

TD4438-- Polar Lights 1/24 Ghostbusters Ecto 1 Finished! See  Pg. 6!

Stikpusher-- 1/48 Fujimi AH-1S TOW Cobra

taxtp-- Bennetton B188 Formula One car

btp2k2--Revell 1/32 F-14 Tomcat (Jolly Rogers circa 1986)

Deeve--Arii 1/100 Macross VF-1S

dmk--Revell '69 Nova (tricked out Eighties style)

I liked the 80's but the auto kits made for those years were not so great.

If I can find a suitable subject for this build,I'm in.Something that obviously represents the '80's.

You mean the auto kits made IN the Eighties, or all the auto kits of cars from Eighties model years?

Great! Welcome aboard! BTW, I'd be willing to accept your E-11 and A-wing as entries, since Empire came out in 1980 and ROTJ came out in 1983.

Nah,too easy.I was thinking along the lines of the ZZ Top Eliminator or Airwolf.

Either of those would not only be really cool, but perfect expressions of the spirit of the build.

There's also the A-Team van,TJ Hooker police car and The Fall Guy's pick up truck. The first Batman flic came out in 1989,so there's another kit I'm considering. It all depends on what I can get my hands on.

Lets not forget the "Dukes of Hazzard" Charger, Police Car and Jeep from the show of that era..

Ah, understanding dawns.

I'd suggest that you try this T-Bird kit I'm working on, but I haven't gotten far enough in to evaluate it fairly.

I will join this one since it is going to last until the end of the year. I will decide on a kit after I get the three current GB kits I am working on finished.

Yes the 80s were awesome indeed... more good memories and milestones in my life than than easily listed...Party [party]

Hi,

I have a Bennetton B188 Formula One car from 1988.  It's the one with the tricky four color paint scheme. However it's probably about 50% to 60% completed. I'll ask you to make the call on whether it should be included here, or not.

I probably have too many other GB commitments to offer anything else for the time being.

Cheers

Tony

I'm just taking it one GB at a time.

Tell you what, because it's Benetton and Benetton is so Eighties, we'll bump the completion percentage up to 50% and call yours good. Welcome aboard!

I'll play along with this GB. Not sure which kit I should do though.

One I've wanted to for a while, is a 60's muscle car (I'm thinking a '69 Chevelle or a '69 Nova) in faded black primer, with some ugy seat covers, big tires on the back, ladder bars, a small block chevy and header mufflers or glasspacks. Basically a typical car we all had or saw in high school in the 80s.

Would this be appropriate for this GB?

Dmk--

That would definitely fall under "marked as it appeared during the Eighties." You're talking about the kind of car I envied when I was driving around a two tone (white and Bondo) Volare station wagon and raced off the line when I upgraded to a Le Mans. :-)

Sounds great to me; let me know when you've got your kit picked out.

Don't feel bad. I was driving a Gremlin.  Dead [xx(]  It couldn't spin the tires if I soaked them in used motor oil, but it had a mean flea market Pyramid stereo with a big power booster under the dash. Twisted Sister actually sounded better with all that distortion.

I think I'll go with the the '69 Nova. I remember them being more affordable and the more likely candidate for a minimum wage 7/11 parking lot & street cruiser.

Now if I can build a kit of what the "Cars" we drove during the 80's looked like even if they are older ( like the 69 Nova)  Im in for this.  - Air shocks, Hood scoops, White letter BFG tires, slotted mags or Crager 5 spokes - Yee Haw Cowboy [C):-)]

I am in if I can build a 1/100 scale VF1S From Macross.

It is an original 1984 release.

I bought this when I was 14 or 15 for 99 cents. I bought a bunch of every one of them. Built most of them when I was 15, then sold almost all of them when I was 29. boo. I should have kept them cause they are worth way more now :)

cdclukey, put me down for a Revell '69 Nova.

I may also do a '86 Charger or an '87 Grand National later in the year.

And hey, no laughing, my Le Mans was awesome!

BTW, my Dad took a Gremlin and put it on a Bronco chassis once. A 4X4 Gremlin was a real head-turner! He did the same thing with an El Camino that's still being driven today.

You are right, they were Hot looking cars. Closest thing to the GTO for those who could not afford or find them. For some reason my mind read Le Mans Station Wagon - boo

A buddy of mine put a Pinto on a Bronco chassis. It had a access panel inside like a van has so he could change the spark plugs.
