Hey all!  Here's my first (very late) update on the M4A3 Sherman.  Its a bit rushed as I only have a few minutes before I go to work.

First thing:  OOB went out the window....had to add some hex bolts that were missing and spruced up the exhaust with some brass tubing.

Roughed up the transmission cover with some Tamiya Extra Thin cement and a stiff nylon bristle brush.

I have a barely used Sherman PE set that I may as well use (OOB??) so I sanded off the molded on sand shield mounts on both sides so I can add the PE mounts.

Lastly, I have a Tasca Sherman suspension set that I thought might be faster to build than the kit suspension, so I built one of each as a test.  Although the Tasca set has more and better detail, it also has twice the amount of parts and took longer to build.  Even when I added some hex bolts sliced from .08 styrene hex rod to the kit parts, the Italeri suspension was faster to build!  In the end I don't think I'll miss the extra detail!  Italeri kit on the left, Tasca on the right.

Well, that's it for now.  I'll try to force the issue this week and finish the build next weekend.

OK, I'm calling this one done. Research history on the vehicle and finish. The 3rd Panzer Division received these in the summer of 1944. The model was finished with a base coat of Dunkelgelb and standard markings applied. When winter came to the Eastern Front the troops applied winter whitewash by hand, leaving the markings visable. I applied several washes for weathering and then a diluted coat of elmers glue with Woodland Scenics snow sprinkled down to put the vehicle in it's environment. The model was build straight out the box. There were some fit issues, if I build another I will go with the Dragon offering.

Alright...

I've reached a point where a decision needed to be made.  I could either focus on finishing the Marder, and build it basically out of the box (aside from the details I've already added), or I can accept that it won't be done by the end of this GB and continue scratching as much detail as I can.

Fact of the matter is, I'm having too much fun with this build, so I'm not going to rush it.  For that reason, I've got to respectfully withdraw from the GB.

Dupes, you have my apologies - you can beat the snot out of me at ValleyCon...

Hope you guys will still pop into the armor forum to follow my progress.

Hey, I checked a book out of my local library, and found some pics to support my original smart-a$$ suggestion of "throwing a tarp over it"! oops - I should accredit the stolen photos shouldn't I!

And on a more serious note, I'm putting the finishing touches on the Storch tonight. Not a chance of having the diorama base set up in time for the end of the GB, (some unexpected freelance work fell in my lap) but I will finish it & post "final-final" pics at a later time. See ya tomorrow,

Between all of the shows the past couple of weeks (awards! loot!), my continued crap internet (blah), and the early arrival of bike season this year (yay!) I haven't been able to keep the end of the GB rolling the way I would have liked. However, you fellas have done a pretty darn good job of it  yourselves!

Tellis - great finish! Big Smile I'll add you to the front page once I can get to some broadband.

Ernest - OOB went right out the window, I see. Stick out tongue You know, one of these GB's we're going to have to get you to start a build in the first week rather than the last...Whistling

Vance - those are some great pics! You can argue just about any impromptu winter camo imaginable after seeing them.I don't recognize the vehicle in the last shot (the 'weasel'). What is it?

Detailfreak - got any shots of your elefant?

the Weasel was a small amphibeous transport.. I built one long ago from a Italeri or Monogram kit.. when I was in High School, neat little thing... held about 5 troops ??..

"Weasel" was the only reference to the photo that I saw. I ran a quick google search & found "M-29", have a peek at this page, it's massive, but if you scroll down to almost the bottom, they show one stowed under an a/c waiting to be parachuted somewhere:

Dupes – yes, that will work for me.. who knows what new curveball life will throw my way, but I will continue to build and post updates until tax day.

Bufflehead – very nice start and good detailing… question: you mention “0.08 styrene hex rod”… will that give you a ‘scale-accurate” (or close enough) hex bolt heads at 1:35 scale? I will get me some then…

Tellis – congrats on the finish; looks nice. I like the look of the WS snow.

Vance –Those are great pics! I may need the tarp ;)

Unfortunately for myself we've experienced a rash of lovely weather here in the northland and my days have been pretty much devoted to honeydo's and long-overdo's before Ireturn to work from what is a lay-off that always seems to last forever,I'm not much of a late nite builder .Everthing that's been shown on this G.B. has been great but alas I have'nt much more progress than what has been previously shared. But do'nt think I will not stop posting in this G.B till I'm finished!

I know, aren't those great! I was just wandr=ering the history section waiting frr my wife at the library & this book was just laying out waiting for me - funny coincidence with the tablecloths etc. Something to keep in mind for all those armour builders out there I suppose.

I am declaring myself officially complete on the Storch, with a * beside my name. The plane is done to my eye (in person) and ready for shelf duty. BUT, I plan to keep working on a proper diorama base to display it on. A few of my earlier pictures show a fuel drum & some access panels piled near it. I'll be doing that, with maybe a workbench & some ski marks laying in the snow. And once I get it on the base I will likely do a little more weathering to blend it in with the surrondings, but that is for a later date. Some final (for now) pics:

Storch "final pics"

OK, so what was added to finish it off - rear gunner's glass & gun in place, auxiliary fuel tank, pitot tube, access door, landing light, wingtip lights, hand painted repairs to swastika + cross decals as mentioned earlier, a pair of blade-like items underwing near the cabin (not sure what they are?), some more light weathering. When I finally get the base done I'll have to post some more pics.

Dupes, thanks for running the group build and keeping us all on track despite your internet woes! I've had a great time sharing pics & keeping an eye on the others in progress. This was my first GB (and I doubled it up with the "Eye in the sky" gang!) on the forum & had a great time with it. Yes To be honest I think it helps motivate us to finish things up knowing there are others watching what you're up to. I've had a great time & I'll keep checking in for those stragglers!

Man, talk about internet woes...I don't know if it's the forum, or the fact that SOOO many people around here can't get broadband at home so it's clogging the library wireless to an almost unusable state. Pretty sad situation. As a result, it's taken me three days to be able to view Vance's pics. Nice stuff, Vance! Will update the front page with your and Tellis' builds as soon as I can.

Anyways, due to my lack (inability) of participation, the GB will indeed be extended two weeks until Tax Day. After that, it's going to go the way of the Dodo so we can look ahead to the next great project. Get your final pics in (assuming you're done!) and I'll do a nice wrapup over in the armor forum (maybe even in the aircraft forum...some nice flying builds here!).

Ok, finally time for another update… still hoping to make the tax deadline, but got bogged down in detailing the build. As usual, please point out any errors, inaccuracies or plain goofy stuff! Only my second 1:35 armor build (fourth total lol)

I mangled the grills during thinning, so I had to fix the ‘battle damage”. I also had to insert some styrene in the space between the grills and the hull:

My very first attempt at soldering lol  it is easy, but DO get some solder flux (unlike me ;) :

The louvers/slates in position; you wont see much of them in the final product, but better than a black hole:

I cut out the plastic engine grill. I left the “border”, since it had some nice bolt detail. That meant scrapping a lot of plastic from the inside, so I could position the mesh from the back and still have it very close to the surface. Results are ok I think:

The finished grill, sorry it’s a bad pic. I will position it in CLOSE position once I paint the inside:

Time to thin out the fenders (with the Dremel of course!), then add some battle damage/dents. I simply left the plastic close to my light source, then “molded” the battle damage. I think the results are ok; opinions?

Back fenders; different type of damage. I thinned out the fenders and bent them some… but then added a drop of Tenax to the fender, thinning out the plastic (melting) in the middle of the fender, creating a “bump”. The right side, I melted a sliver of plastic onto the fender (again, with Tenax), creating a “rumpled” effect. We will see how it looks once I lay down some paint:

More “playing around” with added parts… added blue plastic to mimic a periscope. Not sure how accurate it is, or if it works… opinions?

Finally, also got these tracks to supplant the very primitive elastic original Tamiya tracks. You can easily see the difference, but also the work involved! THREE attachment points per link!  *grump…..*

Have also joined the hull and added some handrails, pics to follow. The big decision will be…do I prime first, due to all the multimedia stuff added? (plastic, PE, copper wire, brass, resin). Or take a risk and spray Russian green over everything, so I can start the wintering part and maybe finish on time??

Looking good JMart!  I'm also trying to finish my build by tax time!  I like your banged up fenders, they look great to me!  Same with the grill work you did!

As for painting:  If the PE parts were in locations where paint would easily rub off I would primer it, but in your case it looks like the PE is in a safer location so I say just paint right over it!  That's if you want to save time.

Lookin good jmart, you've obviously bumped up a few fenders in your time!

I think I'd give it a quick coat of primer due to the mixed materials, especially with the dark plastic. But if you are in time-crunch mode you could probably get away with going for the green right away, due to the upcoming whitewash.

Hey, look who's here! Stick out tongue

Good work Jmart - certainly looking the part. I'll echo the primer idea - especially with the brass stuff you're going to want some.

Been doing a lot of building and riding my bike...the coffee shop IS finally open again (although mobbed - slooooowww internet), so hopefully I'll be able to check in more frequently. One more week to claim badges!

Alright fellas! Well, tax day has come and gone...and, fortunately, so has all the snow! So it's time for this GB to wrap up. Those of you that are still in progress (JMart, Ernest...anyone else?) can post up finished pics here - if you have them - to still claim your badge. I'll get mine of the Type 90 up whenever I get a chance - I've got a MONSTER backlog of pics to put up on Photobucket. I'm talking builds from two, three months ago.

I'm more than pleased with the output for this run through of Winter Warriors! We'll certainly do this again in another two years. I'll be posting up a wrap-up thread in the appropriate forums some time here in the near future (as usual, dependent on internet time).

Hoping I can do something to solve my internet woes soon...feel like I've been on an extended (non-voluntary) absence. Unfortunately, I don't see it getting much better until fall. Will keep sticking my head in here as frequently as I can, and I'll certainly be building a lot!

For those of you so inclined to do the GB thing, the next one will be starting either late this year (maybe Nov/Dec?) or the beginning of  2011. Same style as 1,000 Roadwheels, we'll be focusing this time on the 38(t) chassis. Another long one, most likely a full year. So be sure to keep the appropriate kits tucked away in the closet until the time comes!

Lookin' forward to your next GB, dupes! (and the next Winter Warriors in two years) Who knows maybe I'll join your next GB related to the 38(t) chassis and actually start my build for it.....unlike the 1,000 Roadwheels where I never started.Blind Fold

Anyways, over on my end my spring semester is almost over(2 weeks leftBig Smile) and my modeling time should go up substantily (despite the fact I may be taking summer courses). Either way, I finally did decide on that military research paper topic I mentioned in my last post .....depleted uranium. So far it's proven to be quite the interesting topic.

Thanks everyone for the input and suggestions. I did get carried away with detailing and still have a LOT to put into the build. Therefore, I did not finish the GB or came close to finishing…however, I take that as a POSITIVE. I started the GB with the plan of a straightforward OOB build of the old Tamiya kit and concentrate on the wintering camo aspects. As you could see from the few pics I posted, I really got into detailing, AMs and making the tank unique. Of course, next time I will start much MUCH earlier to accommodate the “digressions”. I am 0-2 for Dupes’ GBs, apologies mate : (   But I learned a lot and got really inspired by several of the builds here, therefore pushing my skills waaaaay outside my very small box. And that is a good thing J

Mg – I also have only 3 weeks left in MY semester, but I am at the giving end (professor) you think students are the only ones happy semester is over? ;)

Depleted uranium? Interesting subject – I have couple review papers in PDF format on the subject, as it relates to health effects. PM me if you want them and I can try and track them down.

First thanks for the kind offer of help, but I have more then enough sources collected already(some congressional reports, NATO reports, and medical studies), nevertheless thanks for the offer.

So where and what do you teach? I'm at UIC majoring in architecture, minoring in history.

PanzerGuy:

Sorry to be the dummy, but I like the scratch-built fuel tanks on your AFV. Gotta admit that I'm not sure what you did after rolling up the aluminum sheet around the pencil. What's inside? I think I get rest of it, but what's holding the fuel tank together?

Like your photo: no better Panzer ace in history than Robert Shaw. Lucky for us he was English.
