T Ellis – Thanks for the info on the kit… maybe there IS a reason it pops out on sale all the time ;)

Steve/panzerguy – Really doing a nice job on yours; I just managed to mangled MY grills trying to improve them L  (pics to follow).

Arki – That is a gorgeous bird; nice to see a wingy thing in here : )  I see the problem with the decals…  thanks for sharing how it happened, I got some Promodellers’ wash recently and would probably have done the SAME error. I read the same good things you say about them…   so, if I paint with enamels, thing brush some Future, decal, seal decals in Future (second Future coat), the PM wash… then what? Seal/dull the shine with Dullcote? Or seal with Future again and then Dullcote?

Dupes – really nice machine, what can I say!

Steve/SMJmodeler – Look forward to one of your excellent “messes” ;)

Oh by the way, is it ok if we “Northerners” poke a little fun at the “Southerners” who actually got FIVE times more snow than us?

cheers

Steve, you got it.  It's up on the shelf, so I'm done. Moved on to the next build.

JMart

so, if I paint with enamels, thing brush some Future, decal, seal decals in Future (second Future coat), the PM wash… then what? Seal/dull the shine with Dullcote? Or seal with Future again and then Dullcote?

After you've applied the PM wash and removed the excess to your satisfaction, then simply apply your finish coat whether that's a flat, semi-gloss or gloss.  You don't need to apply another layer of Future, in fact, I would discourage too many Future coats as it does have a "thickness" that could distort surface detail if applied too heavily or in too many coats.

Cheers

hey guys,, quick question.. how much do you weather your builds,, before the winter camo ??.. I'm adding some dust n dirt.. oil stains.. but I don't want to waste the effort if its covered by white wash....

Huh?

Lookin' good P38. All those track links & little bolts... now I know why I build aircraft!! :)

I don't think I'd do much weathering before the whitewash, maybe darkening along panel lines, and rust/weathering around anything that sees a lot of heat. (Exhaust & engine area, cannon barrel, undercarriage). Oil stains etc would work through the whitewash I'd think.

And now for my update, titled "The good, the bad & the ugly"! I'll blame it on being distracted by the Olympics! (Apologies for the picture quality, left my tripod at work & hands are apparently not that steady!)

Leaving the door open on the other side so I can see all of the interior detail... so I figured I'd take my first crack at the "cut-them-yourself" masks on the other side. (That little stack on the left will all get cut out.) Knife blade wasn't quite sharp enough on the first few edges, had to replace blade & keep going. I'll use a little Micro mask to make sure I haven't missed any spots.

Cabin floor & rear set installed. Weathering looks a little off in the pictures but seems fine to my eye in person.

Cabin sidewalls. The piece in the lower left is the underside portion with all the stitching, more on that later...

OK, here comes the bad... Well , first the two halves were glued together. Hard to get all those little alignment pins into place - there are three in the dead space behind the rear bulkhead, one inside the cockpit that eventually supports the pilot's seat, and one which is also the mount for the IP. Doing it again, I think I would concentrate on making the topside seam perfect, then gouge out all the holes for the pins (from below so they wouldn't be seen) then add the pins & glue them. Fewer thing to worry about all at once.

Then Vance broke the rules & for some reason clipped off the little support piece that protects the slice that hangs over the door opening. I think I was planning on installing the wing spar & then got onto something else? Superglue at the break & then at the connection to the spar eventually fixes this.

YES! cabin floor + lower section placed inside

More of the cabin interior, looking backwards.

Now here comes some of the ugly. Hard to see in this pic, but look closely & you can see that despite all of the alignment pins etc., I have ended up with a step in that upper join, right side (in the pic) is slightly higher. A little filler putty & sanding required, not that big a deal I guess.

But as you may have noticed earlier, I also have a big gap between the sidewall pieces and the lower piece. There is triangular bracing near the cockpit that obviously needs to line up, so I superglued that section as best I could. The tail end of the lower portion slots into place at the rear too, but when both of those connections are made, the entire lower portion bulges leaving a noticeable gap.

Note the wing spar is in place now to avoid any more breakups on that long skinny bit!

Gap-filling superglue to the narrowest areas, epoxy putty to fill in the larger gaps. Kind of slopped on in a hurried, epoxy putty driven rage I guess! Sanding & smoothing tonight.

After I realized the lower portion wasn't fitting, I took it out & examined all the interior framework etc that I installed. For the life of me I can't figure out what I did to throw alignment off. (Have heard nothing but glowing reviews of the kit, so I'm assuming I've done something to it.) And now that I've stopped to think about it, maybe sanding the trailing edge of the lower portion would have fixed the issue without so much plastic surgery. Anyway, the patches I've made don't look to have any effect on alignment of the wing supports etc., so I should be alright from here on in!

Vance - looks good! I'm still a bit hazy on why they give you masks that aren't cut out yet...? Especially since some of their other kits (I'm thinking a 190 A8/R8) come with precut ones.

Chris - same goes for you - nice finish. And the pictures are WAAAAAY better against the solid background. Yes As for the weathering, unless you plan on "peeling back" some of the whitewash, you should be fine to forego any of it until after the white goes on.

Not much forum time for me the past few days (various reasons), I do have some pics of the Type 90 I need to get loaded to Photobucket. Unfortunately, doesn't look like it'll be today.

Keep up the good work! For those of you who are fans of procrastinating, just thought I should let you know that you've got exactly 45 days of WWII-TW left to crank out some builds. Whistling

Yup, pre-cut would have led to less head-scratching. The only thing I can figure, based on my design/printing background, is the quantities involved. I'm just guessing here, but I'm assuming that the Storch was a (relatively) small batch, and production costs per unit of masks would have added $5 to an already pricey kit. They can't really plan on using the die for these things on multiple variants in the future either right.

My new motto for this kit: All's well that is finished well! Hopefully. Smile

Arki – thanks for the info, cheers.

P38 – looks really nice. The extra details make it stand out. I am a newbie, cant help you with the weathering steps.. but would go for most weathering to be done post-winterizing.

Vance – Looking good; not sure what to say about non-precut masks, sort of defeats the purpose of including a mask in the first place! Look forward to the rest.

I finally took the Dig cam away from the brood and took some pics (and downloaded the older ones), will be posting the initial batch later today I hope.

cheers

Jmart:  my shading was done post Olive dab, I just added a few drops of flat black to my Od green, then followed the panel lines and edges with a fine spray, I also hit the bolt heads.

Vance: we may all be overlooking one obvious reason your masks arn't precut... someone may have just messed up and not put them in the die cutting machine,, or 2 got stuck together, or some  other mundane reason and your kit got the messed up one... unless someone knows other kits came that way..

Hey P38 - Yes, again drawing on my printing industry experience, my first thought was "somebody screwed this up!". I went looking around various product reviews & buildups, although I couldn't track it down in my FSM back issues. Every one that I found mentioned how odd it was that these things aren't die-cut.

Maybe it's a conspiracy involving the makers of after-market masking sets! :) There's little else to improve on this kit as far as I'm concerned. (OK, maybe seatbelts would be a nice addition too...

p38j - When you upload photos from Photobucket, which line of code are you copy/pasting from the 4 options below the thumbnail in Photobucket?  Direct link?  HTML?

If you copy/paste the code in the Img Code line, all that annoying extra code info in brackets above and below your pics should go away.  Or at least in theory.

Well guys, I spent some time on sanding out my mistakes on the Storch last night, seems to have covered up my fit issues. I guess it's not really a model until there is some filler putty involved! Anyway, to get my positive vibe back on track I'm going to share a couple of pics of a previous winter camo job that I did, proving to myself that I can pull it off again! (Hope you don't mind!)

1/72 Academy kit, Erich Hartmann's Bf109 G14. Airbrushed underside and topside colours, handpainted the winter wash afterwards.

I wanted it to be mostly white, starting to wear off but not too bad

  • Started with an airbrushed splinter pattern for the upper surfaces, future to seal
  • masked off the entire canopy and yellow area underneath the nose
  • then used (drumroll!!) "q-tips" to finish the application. One little dab at a time with thinned flat white. It gave it a really good textured look without getting too built up.
  • Decals went on over the sealed white.
  • a little weathering + flat coat to seal it all up

It turned out really well, but if I were to do it again, I'd decal, then apply the whitewash so the areas around the markings look a little more natural. I did it in the order I did to make sure I didn't lose that tulip petal pattern.

Ok,, the M-10 is almost read for the white wash.. Just need to finish the tools.. Pre white wash weathering is done..   added stains around fuel caps and drips down the side.. rust stains down the side in spots near the bolt heads and some other areas.. Rubbed pastels in areas to add dust ,,,, grime,,., weathered the panel lines and corners... silver pencil on turret top edges and other areas.. not all things are apperant in the pics.. Tracks need more work to.. But.. here she is at the moment..[View:/themes/fsm/utility/Bow on:550:0]

Heres an update on my progress with the SU.

All the casting texture has been added using green putty. Had to redo the welds on the upper hull. I had originally added them on the roof of the superstructure. After looking at some close up pics I found out that the welds should be on the sides and not on the top. Welds were missing in a few other places and these were added using Testors white putty.

All the holes and gapes were filled in use styrene strips and more putty.

After assembling the MK tracks I only had six links left over so I decided to use the kit spare tracks on the hull front and added a little detail with some grandt line nuts. I'll place the the extra MKs on the side fenders.

Still have to add the fuel drum racks, periscopes and rear fenders. If I'm lucky I may be able to get some paint on this weekend.

Everything is looking really nice guys.  Keep it up and this will be just one more Dupes GB Extravaganza.

Vance that looks fantastic.  There is a piece of armor in my future with that technique for sure.

Well thanks for the thumbs-up guys, means a lot considering the models I'm seeing around here! Wing nut, that method would work very well on armour too. It takes some time but allows you to control how much coverage any particular area is getting. Make sure to have a fistful of q-tips though. After a little while they will start to soak up the paint & start giving a more defined circular dot. Have fun with it,

Vance

Vance - I really like how it turned out. I think you're right about trying it with the decals already in place, though. Might give it more of a "field-applied" look.

Boyd - so  you really started the Marder? Do we get to see it?

Chris - looks good. When's the whitewash going down?

Steve - can't wait for paint on this badboy...awesome construction as usual. Hey, where do you get those Grandt Line nuts?

Wingy - "Dupes GB Extravaganza", eh? Hahahahahaaa...Stick out tongue

As for me, the Winter Olympics have slowed me down a bit - hard to do pin washes on a coffee table while watching snowboarding or short track speed skating (despite what Wingy will tell you!). Rest assured the Type 90 will be done sooner rather than later. Yes
