Winter Warriors II - The Wintering!

Its a wrap.

Well what can I say? An interesting experiment, fun, learning curve, 1/76 scale tracks need practice not to destroy,  and much more. No to dissapointed except for screwing the sprocket and drive wheels, making the track have a inward cant. I think the snow turned out well, used a bit of the missus ultra fine glitter to add to the snow for the reflective ice crystal look, looks great IRL, maybe a bit much blue compared to the silver & white, the photos dont show very well. Next time will prolly try a predone snow instead of the bicarb. Happy with the mud as well for a first time.

Bicarb, is that baking soda?  That is what I used on my SU 76.  For the packed part I mixed it with hairspray the rest is just sifted on like naturally fallen snow.  It sticks pretty well and is free.  Just swipe it from your wife's baking supplies!

Mikael - I've been thinking about next year's WW entrant (assuming I can think of a way to paint this). I don't know if I'd call them "quadrantal triangles", but maybe "quadrantal hexagons"?

Hi, first timer for a group build. I have a Tamiya 1/35 T-34/76 that i just finished,hope its ok. Also first time to really try and paint the crewmen. I just have to figure out how to post pictures of it.

Pnzrmk4 - we'd love to have you in the GB, but I can't accept builds that are already finished. If you'd like to start something else that we can see progress from start-to-finish, please do! Otherwise we'll have to try to get you in next time around.

Konigwolf - NICE finish! I'm digging this guy a lot. Refresh my memory on how you made the snow base?

I do have one request - can you take a shot with your build sitting on a clean background? Nothing fancy, just a big sheet of paper (colored or not) behind it would help everyone pick out the details much easier, as well as make it stand out in the inevitable wrap-up thread even better.

Chris - that interior looks great! Can't believe how fast you're flying through it! I guess my only comment would be to dirty up the floor with some washes/stains/scuffs to match the wear on the rest of the interior. Wow, that is really sweet.

As for me, been working on stowage, tools, figs, etc. Nothing pic worthy today...maybe later, if not, then tomorrow morning.

Marc: thanks, for the compliments, I got alot done yesterday while on sick day...and during the news and NCIS, American Idol..lol.. its good to have the flat screen at the work bench...

I plan on scuffing /weathering the floor boards, I just wanted to get done what can't be worked on after the upper hull is attached... I have fitted the upper hull to see what is visible and the main floor ( olive drab area) can be seen pretty much.. I started the running gear, AFV club's suspsension has 10 pieces per bogie set up.. many seems to clean up, and AFV's instructions are sometimes good.. sometimes sketchy..the illustrations look clear, untill you start to attach parts, then actual attachement points are vague or sloppy,. slow going sometimes... but they come with a rubber spring block and actualy work once put together..

This GB is going gangbusters!  I gotta devote a Saturday morning and read it start to finish!

SMJ - you really should read through the whole GB - tons of good work getting cranked out, and I'm sure everyone would like to hear your feedback. I know I would! I need to settle on how to weather this monster to match those pics.

Chris and I were just texting about the WWII-TW thread making it into the newsletter...I wonder if this means I get kickbacks or something. Heh. Heck, I'd settle for getting the forum to work properly again.

dupes: Any chance you could take a photo of your build in roughly the same angle as the actual tank photo and then post them here side by side?  That would be helpful.

I'll make it a priority to follow along closely and add my two cents in on this GB.  I think it defeats the purpose if I don't actually do the GROUP part of the thing!

Hey Dupes, I think the only kick-back is the potential to add more interested modelers to the GB! (Which isn't a bad thing anyway.)  Have the newsletters always had a mention of hot forum topics? If so I don't remember seeing them before, maybe I just spotted it this time because I'm in on it.

More paint to the cockpit/cabin areas, should be weathering tonight if all goes according to plan. I'm loving this Storch build though, it's out of my regular comfort zone but I still get to use my RLM paints...

Can't wait to see the weathered version of the Japanese circle monster ! (Could be a '50s sci-fi movie title) I would think that wasn't a long-term paint job, so a light touch may be all you're looking for.

humm... someone needs to find and old Aurora Godzilla kit.. throw some snow on his dorsal fins... then he can stomp Dupes tank... lolol

Holy crap! I just scrolled up & spotted (no pun intended) this pic Dupes... have you been leaving the cover off the glue again? Wow, it would be spectacular if you could pull it off. You could output a custom decal sheet with the lozenge pattern, but I think there's too much texture to deal with on a tank. Maybe you could use decal on as many of the flat surfaces as possible (maybe even before adding some sub-assemblies), then finish up with masking tape and brush everywhere else, kind of connect-the-hexagons.

Dupes, I had thrown my name in the hat in December but have been a little late getting started and posting some progress. Italeri's Sd Kfz 140/1 Aufklarungpanzer. Have completed the hull and superstructure, put a coat of white on the interior, assembled the weapons system and put the mesh screen on the turret. Just about ready for a coat of Dunkelgelb and to start on the tracks. There have been minor fit problems and more that a fair share of flash to trim.

I think I've seen that scheme before.....if you have "Essential Techniques for the Model Builder" check out page 66, somebody airbrushed a paint scheme just like that.

That is another awesome scheme.  I think you are right, someone did a write up of their build with this scheme.  I think they used hexagon shaped stickers for masks and added them as they went along, or something like that.  Whatever they did, it came out great!

Man, I have got to wrap up the 1/72 Sherman I am working on and get crackin' in this GB.  So much great work is going on... of course, I might lower the bar a little...

Working on my end.  I think my Floquil Reefer White is getting old, as it didn't spray quite like I wanted.  But it'll work. Yellow ID markings are on, and very close to installing gear and propeller so I can apply the Future coat.

Arki - we going to get a pic of this monster before you're done?

Couple of quickies for you guys...still not at the weathering stage, trying to add everything first so that I can involve all of the parts in the wear-and-tear phase.

Dupes, for the most part, I'm finished. I'm just working on a suitable base at the moment but the jadgpanther is complete. So at this point I'll have to dig out the digicam and throw the finished pics up. I really like how your type 90 is progressing, the barrel cover looks good!

Pics won't be up until tonight when I get home from work.

Hey Marc, the M-10 is gaining.. Running gear done.. and on.. Turret complete, and in OD green... upper Hull is next.. this kit comes with all the applique armor bolt heads and washers seperate... 10 per side.. 2 pieces each.. so 40 all together.. aahh! not to mention the headlights.. guards etc..

But,, its coming along...

Lookin' pretty darn sharp!  I think your tissue paper barrel roll came out quite well.  What is the thread/string that you used?

I like the .50-cal brass.  Gonna try any links, just to elevate the detail level another notch?!

Progressing along in between job searches.

Currently sitting right here with the T-34. Have a few sub-assemblies going on too.

Dry fitting wheels, turret and some other things just for fun.

Only problem currently. Green circle is a big gap I'll probably have to fill with sheet styrene. Red circle makes it look like I should be able to file it down but the top of that plate is perfectly flush so it would drop that. This gap was probably a mistake somewhere on my part.

Well, they're a little later than promised, but without further ado, here is my finished Trumpeter 1/72 Jagdpanther in the best winter scheme that I could muster.

And there you have it. Second career group build finished. The kit went together without a problem, though the vinyl tracks were a pain. I'm a little disappointed by the lack of detail, such as tow cables and pioneer tools but I guess in the scale, they'd be really small and difficult to handle. Its all brush painted as well as its much too cold out side to use the airbrush. Since it snowed over the weekend, it gave a good context to the finished model.

I had once vowed never to touch a 1/72 scale armor kit. Well, I broke the vow with this kit and just the other day bought three more kits in the same scale. This one got me hooked.

Nice job on the little Jagdpanther Oddmanrush! Looks like there is plenty of detail considering the size, you'd need a magnifying glass to see pioneering tools anyway. Makes me cold just looking at it... or maybe the outside temps are finally getting to me! (-20 celsius up here in NB - Dupes must be almost as cold)

Thanks Vance, you're probably right, maybe I'm better off without the pioneer tools as they would probably drive me nuts trying to fiddle with them. I don't envy you the climate although it just snowed here again last night, about 3-4 inches, so I was up early before work shovelin' me out. I should do a build of my Ford Escort in a winter scheme....

Weather's not usually too bad here in the Maritimes. Snow is expected of course, but every so often we get one of these bitter week-long snaps where the temps plummet & we all decide to take up an inside hobby.

I know what you mean about the Escort. I've got an all-white Integra that is sporting ice chunks & salt stains right now - too cold to dare wash it - now there's a modelling challenge! But I think my backup should anything go horribly wrong with the Storch will be a diorama of a snowball fight in my backyard :)
