Winter Warriors II - The Wintering!

Very cool dio!

Moving along on the T-34/76. Laying down some priming coats to make the white paint go down easier. Got some cracking on the first set of road wheels from the primer spray being bad. Laid down a different primer and took the cracks away as they weren't very deep, thank goodness.

I will try to post some pictures when everything isn't primer gray.

Josh - are you putting down a layer of good ol' Russky green before your white?

Dioramator - snow in the tracks (and the signpost) are both improvements. Looks great! One might actually think you're from Upper Weelyabarraback rather than Adelaide with work like that!

I'd be very interested to hear what your figure-painted "seven step" program is! Got a short version? Or a long version, for that matter?

Arki - we going to see a shot or two of your pre-whitewash paint scheme?

Oddman - I'll add your 1/72 JP to the list...is there any chance that the Stuka will get done before the end of the GB? If so, I'll leave it up there.

Tony - tracks looks great. Something about those ost/winterketten...

Chris - what set are you using that includes a resin Cullins device? Verlinden something?

Dupes, fine work there! Sweet job masking that too. Looks like your tank has a bad case of the pox! As for the Stuka, at this point, I'm doubtful I'll be done by the deadline...or anytime in the near future. So, I'll just aim for the Jadgpanther for now. If I end up getting the Stuka done, that'll be a bonus but you can remove it from the list if you wish.

Marc: the AFV club kit came with the Cullens device, its resin, went together real nice, I have it glued to the front hull piece already.. it came in a generic ziploc bag in the kit.. I'll ck the instructions to see if you gives a brand..

Holy Smokes Dupes I think you need to clean your air brush,you got a terrible case of spit and sputter there.

Chris - you don't mean to say it came WITH the AFV Club kit, meaning made by AFV Club, but came in the box when you purchased it second hand? I.E., made by some other manufacturer?

Oddman - I'll put you down the the 1/72 JP...and we'll have to hope that that Stuka gets it's turn on the bench before the first of April.

Marc: the Particular kit came as an upgraded version, its the same as my other kit, other than it has the armored turret top, and it came with the resin Cullen hedge row device. The kit was new, still sealed when I got it.. #35S07, I did a search and found the kit, but not all the listings have the "extra".. I'll check tonight to see if says who makes it.. But it did come in the kit from AFV club that way..

Tom - really sorry to hear that you'll have to bail. Still a little over 2 months to go...no chance you can squeeze one build out before the end?

Chris - ahhh, one of the special edition boxings. I suppose that anything could happen if it's a special edition!

Looking very good, circular cardboard masks right? A little weathering and you're finished, unless you're adding to a base - I've been out of the loop for a few days. Some more progress on the Storch over the last few days, I'll have to break down & addsome pics here today if possible.

brushpainting cabin details etc., starting to look at wing assemblies.

Lining up the wing halves, leading edge slats and various actuators after cleanup. (I just wanted to go right to the wings while interior paint was drying.)

Yup, great detail right out of the box - I feel like an armour guy lining up individual links... OK, maybe not quite the same! :)

Wow, looks like half of the wing is made up with control surface, it really must have looked like a Stork flapping away while it was taking off!

Not quite cardboard masks, but close -

sheet styrene.

So it's sheet styrene, clean-cut circles, and the distance from the surface will feather the edges slightly. Circle template + scriber to make the circles I'm assuming? I've used rough-cut card masks before on a German nightfighter before. Application went well, but it was hard to predict the exact shapes I was going to end up dealing with. I suppose the styrene can be scrubbed clean at some point if too much paint has built up - cardboard just wilts...

It's a standout camo for sure, great choice.

dupes - The Osprey book for the T34/76 is actually too advanced for me lol.  Not too much basic info, and all four examples are exotic vehicles kitbashed from several kits/AMs. I will follow Mig's winter camo technique, which is explained better in that book than in his FAQ. I got the MIG winter filters, first time for that one also.

I also have the Osprey Modelling the T34 (different book); which is much simpler (for me :) and includes a decent walk-around as well as a build-up of the old Tamiya T34/76 1942 kit, the one I have. I will be able to add couple scratchbuilt details and stuff  to make it interesting, as well as a base. A lot of firsts!

tony - that is one mean looking machine, really enjoying your work so far! Congrats on the finish

Brett - that is great work all around, love your figs! I also like the composition, interesting vignette, who really cares what EXACTLY they were doing ;), cheers.

Andrew - nice work; I think I recall Doog/Karl warning against the use of bicarb as snow???

Arkii - real nice, cant wait to see that 190.

DF - Gun assembly looks great! You forget how much of a beast this vehicle was.... really look forward to seeing it complete!

Dupes - Build looking great, cant wait to see that dot-patern camo.. and there it is! (happens when you are catching up with 6 pages of this GB ;)  When I have time will check the main WIP.

MM - congrats on finishing... that is one great camo job, actually made my eyes blurry! :)  (That was a BIG compliment.... I really could not make out some of the "lines" of the vehicle, which is the whole point of camo!)

Josh - welcome to the GB, hey this is my SECOND 1/35 armor lol. This time I will leave the wheels/tracks off for the weathering, so I can put some "mud" on the hull behind the wheels (hope that makes sense!).

satch - nice build; ditto on what dupes said, or maybe hit with a filter? what do I know lol

oddmanrush - I have done couple 1/72 armor (making THREE total armor builds! LOL) and have a storage suggestion for you... I take the clear plastic containers that my wife gets at the supermarket with salad or whatever. Some of the larger ones, you can clean them up good and a 1/72 armor will fit inside. Close the lid, and presto! A free, clear "display" case to keep it dust free.

Not much to report on my build, dealing with college financial aid forms which are more complicated than taxes or a Dragon SuperKit, all due between Jan 15 and Feb 1st, ugh.

One hint from something I tried... the old Tamiya kits, the wheels have a nasty seam down the middle of the wheel tyre. I got tired of slowly sanding and tried putting the wheel om a Dremel and wizzzz away.... er, the seam just melted instead of being sanded, so I had to chisel/shave that layer from the tires. So, 4 hrs put into the build ,I am still cleaning up the tires... and this is a T34 not a PzIV! LOL    Next I have to decide if it will be worth it to drill the wheel "perforations", which are very shallow in this kit (early T34 used the perforated type of tire). No, Im not doing it by hand, will try the Dremel again lol

Well Tony, if this is "I don't know what else to do", I'd be scared to see what could happen if you really knew what you wanted to do! :) That's a beautiful finish, I keep waiting for it to jump to life & rumble away. Two thumbs up.

James, thanks for the tip, I definitely need a little more storage room, I just need the wife to start eating more salads! In any event, last night marked the first night of modeling in the new space. Not bad, it just took me awhile to get organized as not everything is at my finger tips as they once were. Here is my progress. Sorry for the poor quality but I usually shoot my WIP pics with the cell phone camera because its easier to email them to myself rather than upload them from a digicam. When she's done, I'll take better pics to be sure.

Its really, really, tiny. I've never done a 1/72 scale armor piece before. In fact, I used to swear I never would do one. But to tell you the truth, I like it. It only took me several hours to assemble and paint to this point. So, for the space I work with, 1/72 is probably the best choice for me. Tonight I hope to get some camo on it. The kit has those crazy vinyl tracks too, which was disappointing but manageable. I do have a question though. Do the exhaust pipes look too large for the scale? They look large to me but what do I know.

Any way, felt good to get back in the saddle. Keep at it guys.

Oddman - nothing wrong with a bit of 1/72 armor every now and then! Some of the newer kits come with ca-razy amounts of detail in an awfully small space. One of my own personal examples:

Pvt Mutt- Well I must say the first thought I had was....brrrrr. And no I didn't just come in from outside either, that tank has got some top-notch weathering that breathes that beastly winter look!

Hi, first timer for a group build. I have a Tamiya 1/35 T-34/76 that i just finished,hope its ok. Also first time to really try and paint the crewmen. I just have to figure out how to post pictures of it.

To qoute a very famous young lady:My those are some big teeth you have grandma!Very nice ,I just love it when a peek inside shows something is lurking! Is all this stuff included in the kit?

Detailfreak: the kit came with the Cullen device, seats, floor, and bulk head..tranny, the resin kit has the engine bay, new tranny and tranny bulkhead,,, more detailed guage panel, and PE ammo straps, drivers floor board, and hand brakes, shifter.. I added scrap wire in the engine bay to the oil filters and fuel filters.. detailed with a wash,, and a little pastel ..

Ps,, in the pics I did notice a few paint brush strays,, i have repaired them now..
