Does anyone know where I can get a 'bubble' canopy for my Tamiya 1/72? Or, does anyone want to vacuform me one?  Big Smile

When I bought my kit, it was an open box. It looked O.K., but I have found what the issue was. The canopy had stress cracks. So, I sanded and sanded and finally got it to a point that it was presentable. Then I used 'bare metal' to mask the canopy and preceded to paint it. All went well and the only thing to do was clean the goo and dip in 'Future'. Then I made the ultimate rookie mistake... I cleaned the canopy with lacquer. To say I was horrified would be an understatement. When I went to the internet to search for a cause, is when I found out about lacquer and canopies.

I found a canopy that might work at Squadron...but it is for a Hasegawa. So it might work, but who knows.

Anyway, let me know if you come across something...

AlterEcho I make those kinda swaps all the time for my Revell kits. I just trim the canopies a bit long just incase, then fit them by sanding them. I do pack them with silly putty before sanding, makes life much easier. I did have the silly putty attack the plastic once, ( I dont think it was a Squadron canopy ) fogged it just a bit, dipped it in future and fixed it up.

Gamera

I like the idea of a Jug GB but would be afraid it might take away a pile of entries from the NM GB III though.

Gamera crossovers are allowed here ya know Big Smile and if I recall correctly there were lotsa painted P-47's too. Sounds like a good idea to me go for it man !!!!!!!!!!

Wow I still cant get over all the interest in the group, you guys and gal ROCK in my book. So if you all think it would work this build group ends on May 1st and I was thinking the new one should start on May 2nd and go to May 1 2012. I will get the new page posted on the morning of May 2nd, and will be keeping the same rules. And as before if you are a week or so away from completing a build for round II I will keep it open for ya or you may carry over to round III, just let me know.

I will be building Revell's 1/48 B-29 Superfortress with foil, well I will be tryin to anyways Stick out tongue but wont start that till late summer as I have a Yak-7 to build then... Well this lil green feller sent me a 1/48 RoG Spitfire Mk IX  that I have been chompin at the bit to build, a really nice looking kit BTW.

This. Also from Weathering, 8th AAF, etc.

My Trumpy Razorback arrived yesterday...I know it's the same size as the Hasegawa kit, but it just seems bigger. Also nice to see somebody mold the four-bladed props as single pieces.

JMart: Thanks! I'll give Sprue Brothers a look. I haven't been in any real rush to pick up the 1/32 since I've intended to get a few of the 1/48 kits done first for practice.

I like the idea of a Jug GB but would be afraid it might take away a pile of entries from the NM GB III though.

AlterEcho: It might not be a perfect fit but it shouldn't be too far off. Personally if I were you I think I'd give it a shot.

A-Echo – Have you checked Squadron canopies? I am currently using their “Tamiya” 1:48 P-41D for my Revell birds… the canopies are easy to (VERY carefully) trim; will probably fit across manufacturers.

I saw one from Falcon, made for Squadron. It is for a Hasegawa, so I am not sure if it will work. If anyone knows that it will work with my Tamiya, please let me know.

Doogs – very nice and clean cover… I may have to try that some day.

Gamera – Check SprueBrothers and their Special Sales… usually have several large scale a/c on sale.

Maybe someone should start a Jug GB Whistling

Dang Doogs, you've as much claim to the title as I have. I think I have about five or so but I'm looking to pick up an Academy P-47N and trolling Ebay looking waiting for a good deal on the 1/32 Hasegawa bubbletop.

I've enough decals to do about thirty jugs though, seems P-47s ended up with some of the best nose-art and I can't stop buying cool new aftermarket sheets.

You know I was looking though my stash the other day and I believe that if I had any more Thunderbolts you'd have to call me Zeus. Still I made a New Year's Resolution that I would enter NO more GBs till I get some stuff cleared off the bench. So I won't commit at this time but might drop in with a P-47 sometime in the future.

Heh - I was just joking over in Weathering that I've got a bad case of Jug Fever.

Somehow, since November, my stash has gone from one 1/48 Tamiya Razorback to...

2 x 1/48 Tamiya Razorbacks

1/48 Tamiya P-47M

1/48 Monogram Razorback

1/32 Hasegawa P-47D bubbletop

...and I've got a Trumpy 1/32 Razorback arriving today.

Had so much fun with Hairless Joe that I'm itching to build another 'bolt post haste! Even considering dropping out of/postponing a few other GBs to make it happen.

Thanks guys, the model is sealed and intend to start adding the wash to the panel lines tonight.

Doogs: Great stuff man. Really like how the Tamiya silver came out.

Do we have a start date for NMF III yet? wait, I need to finish this one first Whistling

currently trying my hand at adding some SB wiring and details to the P-51s radios.

Even though I'm in the position where I'm signed up for too many GBs, and kind of want to drop out of all of them and then sign up on an ad hoc basis as I complete each build...I too am curious to know when NMF3 kicks off.

Also...haven't been too active on here of late, but I just sprayed decanted Tamiya AS-12 Bare Metal Silver for the first time last night. The stuff looks great, dries fast, and holds extremely well. I honestly think it'd be great on its own, but it'd probably also make a great primer for other metalizers. It'd protect plastic from Alclad, and provide a nice undercoat for Model Master metalizers in case of lift.

Thanks for the compliments guys, i'm glad you like the stang so farToast

Randy, yeah mate it's the Hasegawa 1/48 kit, it will carry the Eduard Zoom set, TD seat and wheels, Verlinden engine and gunbay set

and will be finished with allcad and Red Roo decals for 82SQD RAAF.....

Richard, go for it buddy, i recommend you get an Eduard Zoom set for you first crack at AM, there is not a whole heap to add

and the Zoom sets are quite cheap as well...Randy is right about resin, it does have an off putting smell to it when your cutting/sanding

but on the flipside the molded detail is awesome and it's fairly easy to work with...

Colgray, very nice work on your Stang, the NMF came out great, very coolToast

Echo, the jug is looking sweet, looks like your going to have a fine model for your collection...Love the pic showing the humble toothpic, the modelers essential tool...

Gamera, yeah your 29 looks very close to being finished, makes me jealous and want to pull mine out of it's box. Keep the pics coming..Yes

AlterEcho ditto nice EatsWhistling

Ok guys with all the interest shown there WILL be a NMF III Yeah It seems there will be some rather large builds going on for the next round too. The rules will also remain the same.

Got some work done on the Streak Eagle today made the nose probe on my little lathe and am happy with the way it came out. Did a bit more filling and fitted the canopy. I hope to have some pictures in a day or two that are worth showing. My hope is to get a base coat of paint on it this week.

Yayyyyyyyyyyy More shiny stuffBig Smile I am SO going to have fun!!

Dude, I can't wait for the next NMF!!! [drool.....]

I have ordered the Aires cockpit set (Resin and PE) and the Eduard exterior PE set for the Lightning. Also reckon ts going to use at least 2-3 bottles of Alclad lacquer! The surface area of this bird is huge. Not a lot of steps in the instructions but the sheer amount of plastic used in this kit is what made it so expensive.

Keep me posted...

Cheers

AlterE - nice; just be careful with that lamp! I have seen plenty of "sad" (droppy melted) plastic bits in here due to over-lamping :)

NMF III - Yeah, Im in, anytime!

Hey Vetteman, is NMF III going to happen after this one wraps up? I was very naughty today and spend big $$ on the Trumpeter F.1/.3 1/32 English Electric Lightning. I had to have it, such a BIG kit. This bird is HUGE and is going to outsize the Starfighter! Also found some well priced AM but there is no way I am starting this kit till later in the year. This kit is #10, I am currently on #1. So hopefully a new NMF later this year will coincide just right.

Cheers

Casper - Awesome Thunderjet. NMF looks great!

Kermit - Looks wonderful. If there is a boo-boo, I can't see it.

ColGray - You are zooming right along and it is looking good.

Julez - Smashing interior. You never fail to impress.

Vetteman - Thanks for the compliments. I owe everything to the guys here and my mags. Plus you guys set the bar pretty high  :)

Alclad has been laid down. I am now working on all the fiddly bits. Not shown in the picture are the canopy and landing gear. I painted them with black enamel and have them drying under a lamp. I am hoping the black enamel will make the Alclad Chrome really shine. I have not even done this in practice...so I am hoping the results will be decent.

what great work in here! I see Stangs, i see Stangs!

Jeez, Julez, love that interior.. I am hiding mine now, not worthy of this GB lol

Finally back in the bench, working on the seat and pit and re-doing some stuff like the SB belts.

Vetteman,

Nono, i can adjust the pressure but theres no dials on it so i sorta have to "feel" my way around with the airflow. Pretty quiet though.... Found a pic of it on revells website. What you see is what you get... On and off and a knob. No airtank.

http://www.revell.de/index.php?id=210&KGKANR=0&KGKOGP=13&KGSCHL=5&L=1&page=1&sort=0&nc=&searchactive=&q=&SWO=&ARMAS4=&PHPSESSID=220097c2894aa900df9b52f5529d1901&KZSLPG=&offset=1&cmd=show&ARARTN=39136&sp=1

Don't laugh, but often i hook up my AB and then spray air on my face to adjust...Big Smile

The front page has been updated

Kermit are you telling me you can not adjust your air pressure ? And you are getting the nice results with your painting that you get ?? Surprise If that's the case just wait till you can play with pressures man, will be like having a brand new air brush in your hands buddy.

Randy,

Thanks for not listing the build that hasn't been listed yet....ummmm.....yes that's what i meantWink

Yes, that scooter has got me all excited. It is something i never did before and you know i am all in for the occasional challenge. Nowadays all these scooters are 80% plastic and have removable everything so i can work on one piece at a time. I figured i can use model paints as long as i coat it with a good spraycan varnish.

And as for what airbrush i want... Most of all i have my heart set on a gravity feed AB. I own a siphon fed one right now and it's really a great and versatile tool but it's not really suitable for very very fine close in work. I would like a Harder and Steenbeck Evo the most. Affordable and very high quality stuff!Big Smile After that a compressor that is one step better. Right now i have an entry class model without moisture trap or manometer...

First off guys I am sorry for being such a  flake of late and not taking care of the group as I should be. Hopefully I will get back to normal soon. Anyway..........

Xradio81 please accept my most humble apologies for missing your finished build Embarrassed That Dupli-Color paint really worked well for ya, and the blue nose really brings it out. I have heard a lot of guys have trouble with auto paints curing but doesn't look like you had any trouble with that at all. Very well done sir Toast

ColGray and you are learning very very well I must say. Your P-51 is looking fantastic YesYes I especially like seeing the scratch details you have added and the detail painting. The finish looks great and pat yourself on the back the canopy masking is spot on, nice sharp straight lines. Looks like the finish line is in sight for sure for a fine build.

Julez you always seem to do such nice work on your pits and you have done so on this one too, lotsa cool detail popping out. I for one like the looks of the TD seats, but I don't like working with resin, hate the smell of the stuff. Kinda weird huh. I haven't listed your build on the front page yet, is this the Tamiya 1/48 kit ?

AlterEcho man that's some nice work on those seams, if I remember correctly that kit has a few canyons that need filling. I still cant believe this is only your second build. Looking very very good so far.

Kermit no apologies needed my friend, and hey you know your build was in even before you typed the post Stick out tongue That Wildcat does deserve your full attention and IO am really looking forward to seeing it come together in round III. However helping Grandparents comes in way ahead of messing with plastic IMHO. So you are going to airbrush a full sized real life scooter huh ? Well I hope you will be sending me a few pictures of the finished product. Oh and speaking of airbrushes what air brush are you looking to buy ?

So does this mean you are gonna start the MiG now Devil I have the Yak-7 on deck for your group as soon as the F-15 is finished. Looks like both kits are designed the same way loads of detail.

Gamera that B-29 looks huge even in 1/72, looks close to being finished too. Boy that paint went on nice and smooth. Cant wait for this one.

Guys I will get the front page updated today I promise, again I am very sorry.

ColGrey and Julez: That's some great stuff! Sharp work on the cockpits and gee you're almost done Grey.

Mandatory 'I'm not dead yet' post: Have started decaling, the kit only comes with the Second World War decals and my aftermarket sheet didn't come with national insignia so I've had to add the red to the stars and bars, and root around for the 'USAF' decals to build a Korean War B-29.
