Nice work so far, Bish.  These early jets seem to be nothing more than a cockpit mounted on an engine with wings.  I'm struck by how small this aircraft seems to be.  I've got my Beer and Pizza and waiting for the next WIP photos.

 

Just to update my Bone; sealing the decals on the underside tonight.  Pics tomorrow.  Also assembled the crew ladder and started to work on the Cutting Edge exhaust cans.  Slowly but surely moving towards completion.

P.S.  Kevin, know what you're dealing with.  Uneven seams and sink/ejector scars seem to show up at every step with this kit.  Really tests one's patience, doesn't it?  My wife says that it builds character.  My response is that if I haven't got by now, I ain't ever gonna get it....   Building character... go for it.  Big Smile

Basically that all it is, and there seems to have been a number of aircrfat similar to that from this period, such as the Ta-183 and then into production aircraft such as the MiG 15. The next time i take pics i will put it next to my finished Me 262 and you will see how small it is.

I only have 3 nights of modelling left, and thats next week, before a 3 week break. Hopefully i can get the gloss black on then when i get back i can get straight to the Alclad.

Yes, I was curious about a side-by-side comparison of this and the Me 262.  The 262 is clearly the more substantial plane.  Be interesting to see same scale models of the two aircraft.

That's a good way of looking at it.  I see your wife is a "glass is half full" kinda gal.   At times this kit had me at my wit's end but I am learning quite a bit dealing with all these problems.  This kit makes the Hasegawa 1/48 F-14a look like an easy build, which was the first model I ever built......and I actually completed it.   Looking forward to the pics of your build.

That shouldn't be a problem. The reason i have 3 weeks off is that i am over for 4 weeks over xmas and new year. So that means i don't get to go, but also i don't have to work that much, so i am planning some monster modelling sessions. My main aim is to get my 3 kits, B-24, P.1101 and MiG 23 all done by the end of the first week of the new year, and i don't see that being a problem. And hopefully i can get some dio's finished as well.

OK, here we go with a photo update of the B-1B.  The decal sheet that I used was from TwoBobs and the quality was excellent.  Decals are nicely printed, very thin yet easy to apply.  If you see a problem with the decals in the following pictures, it is the fault of the modeler rather than the product. 

However, I do have one complaint for the guys at TwoBobs and that pertains to the instruction sheet for application.  Now I know that I'm getting older and the eyesight isn't what it used to be, but a little help in identifying the stencils would be appreciated.  How about like numbering the decals and including that number on the instruction sheet?  Hey, I've already built Trumpy's 1/32 SU-27 using the Linden Hills decal sheet, which number about 250 individual stencils.  No problem there because each was numbered and its location shown on the instruction sheet.  TwoBobs forces you to identify each stencil by its text; I'm long past being able to read text in 1/48 scale, even with a magnifier.  A challenge, yes, but not impossible to over come.

But I was confused by the rescue arrows and their application.  The instructions show 3 applications, one horizontal on the left side of the aircraft and two, a vertical and horizontal on the right side.  But the decal sheet only provides 2 arrows, one vertical and one horizontal.  Well, me being the smart guy that I think I am, I figured that I would use one of the rescue arrows supplied by the  Revell sheet.  But I didn't stop to look whether it was the right side or left side horizontal that TwoBobs supplied and of course I got it wrong.  Angry

For an overall gunship gray airplane, these markings add a splash of color.  Here'e the radome ans fueling indicator;

 

 

and a look at the fore and aft markings for 85-0084, Hard Rain out of Ellsworth AFB. 

 

 

 

 

I also assembled the crew ladder.  The Eduard PE directs one to use the plastic hand rails after removing them from the kit part.  These looked too thick for my tastes so I bent some 0.02" brass rod and scratched some metal rails that look much closer to scale.

 

 

And finally, I started the Cutting Edge exhaust cans.  Really nice detail here but pain to attach 12 individual actuator arms to each can.  Took several tries to find a system to accomplish it neatly.  But I do like the result.  Here on sits on the wing with walkway decals applied:

 

 

 

Next up;  some dullcoat to tone down the finish and then an overspray to blend the decals.  I'm going for a slightly faded but not overtly weathered look and have already done some shading of the fuselage.  After that, the bomb bays will get opened again and all the rest of the fiddly bits will get assembled and applied.  After nearly 5 months, this monster is nearing completion.

There was a flury of articles published in June 2010 stating the the USAF was considering mothballing the fleet.  Haven't seen anything recently.  Where did you come across the article?  If so, I'm building a relic...

Don, hopefully you can see some light at the end of the tunnel now that you got to put on some decals.  Those burner cans look quite nice. 

It would be a shame if they retired the Lancer.   IMHO it has it's place in a bomber fleet.   We have a high altitude bomber as the B-52, the hard-to-detect B-2.  We should probably keep the high speed low altitude to keep that gap filled.  I suppose it is not my decision to make.....

Yes, nearing the finish.  Almost to the point where I can open up the bomb bay doors again.  Haven't seen the insides in quite a while it seems.  Still lots of little things to do.

I saw it in Combat Aircraft Monthly Sept. 2010 issue. Gates is in killing mode. If he can retire it he's going to.

Sorry I haven't gotten to my Tomcat yet. Not liking the cockpit but there's not much I can do about that. Trying to get to a point on the Osprey to be able to start the Cat.

Yeah I'm one of those "GB members that haven't started yet" Big Smile. Sorry, I've been caught up in other things...not much of an excuse. I was working two other GB's that have since hit a wall...odd how GB's can just up an die like that. So I'm going to push this one forward. You should see my Tornado get started soon, I hope. For what it's worth, I'll be back with the next Tornado shortly. Had to do something different for a while so I've been working on a car kit.  Had to think a while on how I was gonna fill the sink marks on the Tornado wings. I think I can scribe a little deeper and sand most of it out. But the moldings in this kit have other problems too. Just have to regroup...

I managed to get all the sink marks filled in the gear doors.  The wing seams had to be fixed again.  I don't know if the join came loose or what but I had to fix areas of the join.  Alll smooth again and all done spraying Gunship Gray.  woot woot!   Maybe I will paint the Euro Gray tonight.

I'm with oddman rush in being one of the members yet to start. Half my trouble was I couldnt make up my mind what to build, then with the aforementioned flyby of Hobart by the F-111's on friday and their pending retirement what choice do I have? I picked up Hobby Boss's 1/48 F-111C "Pig" Yesturday and hope to be starting it by the months end.

As for the previous 38 odd pages so far (just finished trawling through them all) some wonderful builds going on. As for the Bones, well very intimidating, I don't know if I could ever build one on that scale I have been considering 1/144 but the midway point of 48 scale seems possible if I can find the room. My current completed face it the Tornado, a very smart looking bird indeed.

I sprayed the first coat of Green Drab on the Lancer last night.  It was hard to paint because it was hard to get a good "angle of attack" as I couldn't realistically hold the model to paint it causing more overspray than I would have liked.  I will just have to touch up with some Gunship gray.  Par for the course I guess.  Here are a couple pics of the Bone thus far.

Konigwolf13, glad to hear that you will be joining the mayhem soon!  Welcome Sign  Pordoi, Aggieman and I can attest that the Bone in 1/48 is a PITA.  I think the sense of pride for finishing it will overshadow the aggravation of building it.  Where am I gonna display it you ask?...........I haven't got that one figured out yet.

I will agree that the Tornado is a great looking jet.  Travis promised us more and were are all waiting as patiently as we can........though I am running out as the Bone has used up most of it.

Wow. It's really looking good. I saw a couple of them at my LHS and was thinking about getting it at some point. This kit seems to be making a resurgance. I've seen them at several hobby stores as of late.

Ditto on the angle of attack, although it was much less of a problem with only a Gunship gray bird.  Still, coverage on some parts was a bit of a challenge.  Wingman, an adaptable paint stand that can firmly hold something with a 3 foot wingspan and a body that contains alot of fiddly biys like antennae, etc.,  that would be very welcome.

Also, a couple of our other members who haven't started yet have told me that hey are gering up.  so expect some new builds in the near future.

Thanks for the kind comments everyone.  Much appreciated.  I was going to attempt to build a painting jig for this thing but decided not too, obviously.  I think I can make the paint look presentable with a little touch up.  I plan on using the Trilogy of Terror decals from Superscale.....my 3 year old likes the dragon nose art.  Here is a link to a build of this kit with these decals.  http://www.modelingmadness.com/reviews/mod/kolb1.htm  I hope my build looks half as good.

I touched up the upper surfaces with more gunship gray to remove all the overspray.  I have to say that I am quite pleased with the results.  As soon as it is dry I will be able to move it around a bit and snap a few photos for y'all.
