Variable Geometry: the Swing Wing GB

Thanks everyone. I will be asking for help i'm sure. The resin cockpit is new to me and is gonna be fun.

Very true.  I learn a lot here in my first group build.  Plus you are less likely to take a short cut because others are watching.  I have since signed up for 5 other GBs since starting this one.  I don't know if I will finish all the kits I signed up to do but I do hope to learn a whole bunch more.

Yeah I heard about the fit issues. Built this kit (I think it was that one) when I was a teenager. That's why i'm using the FOD covers. I'll let you know how to apply them when I get to that step. I may take em out and read the instructions before that too.

  Instructions do help.  We look forward to seeing how you modify them 

Agree about the resin though.  This one will be fun to watch.

Medicman Looking forward to seeing this come together. Is this an old kit, don't think i ahve ever seen a revell kit with that style of boxing.

Medicman, some nice lookin' resin you got there. I built that kit a while back, a few fit problems (incidentally, that seems rather common in my builds lately) but not bad. Would you mind detailing how you apply those FOD covers? I'd like to see how that's done.

The front page with the completed builds look great. Nice work everyone. Gonna wash all the resin pieces soon so that I can start. Hopefully Fightertown Decals will release thier new VF-1 decals soon. Shouldn't keep me from starting though.

Don, nothing really struck me as being the problem. I'm not sure if the fuselage, where the wing root sits, was a little warped, or if the wing root itself just didn't fit snug. The top half of the fuselage would not correct the problem, tried that too. The mechanics of the wings were not all that sound as you can see in the second picture I posted. So I wonder if its simply that the wing didn't have enough to really grab onto to keep it up right. Everything else appears level so....here we are I guess.

You can see the starboard side wing has a nasty sag to it. I tried several ways to fix it but it wasn't working so I finally decided to glue it down and hold it in place. Sure, the wings won't be variable any longer but I'd rather sacrifice function than appearance in this case.

That's how she sits now. Hopefully the glue will set ok and I can carry on.....

Any thing specific that you saw that caused the problem in the first place?  Was it poor molding?  Would the top half of the fuselage hold the wing in place once it was assembled, or would the wing still have some sag?

Eitehr way, I did something similar with the B-1B as you probably know, so I can't complain.  The aircraft still has variable geometry even though you chose to depict it in one form.  Form over function, I agree.  Soldier on!

Hi guys, a little more progress, but the kit hasn't improved any....I'm really having a tough time with it, fit wise.

I put the wings together and set them on their pegs that they will eventually swivel on but look at this picture:

The front page is looking nice and full of great builds.  Nice job everyone!  I just gotta get my butt in gear and finish this thing.  Then I can start that F-14.  I might make it an Academy F-14a instead of a Hasegawa.  I don't feel like dealing with that kind of a kit yet.

lol, nice idea, i will see how the Mrs likes it. I have a move next year when i leave the Army. Got to move all my models, built and stashed, as well as all my tools home. Hopefully i will have somewhere to build and display them by then. And then i can do some of my larger projects. At the moment, my hobby room is also my bedroom, sitting room, kitchen and wash room. So space is a bit tight.

The front page is looking good. With whats already been built and whats under way, theres not going to be many blank spaces.

Geez, I'm responsible for updating this GB and I forget to post my own completed build on the front page.  Well, it's now updated for those who want a quick snapshot of all completed Swing Wings. 

Still waiting and looking forward to see several other builds near completion.  Plenty of time still left, though.

I will give your fix a go when I get to that point and let you know how it works out.  Thanks for the heads up......again.

No.  That is one of the errors that I made.  You do have some flexibility with the positioning of the main gear.  Check out my previous post (trying to remember which page) for what I thought might be the solution.  My problem was that the right main gear ended up with the rear wheel set floating just a bit.

Hmmm...I didnt see that post.  I will go back and have a look.  I only asked because I had a look at the main gear for my kit and the port side wheels look a little off.  Your build looked like you were able to get all wheels to touch the ground.
