Variable Geometry: the Swing Wing GB

Kevin, looking forward to your progress photos.  I didn't do anything on the B-1 last week because I needed to get to the LHS for some supplies.  After trying unsuccessfully to mimic the wing shrouds with elastic fabric (didn't like the scale effect and the horizontal striations), I remembered some Evergreen card that I used several years ago to build a barn for a diorama;  called car siding.  It's meant for scratch building old wooden boxcars and can be bought in several sizes.  The sheet that I had was O scale, but like the elastic strips, it seemed too large and out of scale.  So off to the LHS to get HO scale car siding.

This size looked pretty nice, so I cut three strips for each side using the following pic as a guide.

They were painted with a base coat of either Tamiya medium gray or Sky gray and weathered with oil washes in black and burnt umber.  Then dry brushed with burnt umber acylic.  Here's the result;

I'm pretty satisfied with the result.  The only thing left to do is a quick once over the instruction sheet and the model itself to make sure that I didn't neglect anything, then some final photos and this baby is DONE!  Plan is to shoot some outdoor photos tomorrow, weather permitting, of the completed Bone.

That does look like a nasty gap; but you know that any kit that you start as a relaxing OOB build will eventually present a problem like this.  What gets me is watching detail get sanded away when smoothing a seam like that.  My re-scribing technique stil needs improvement.

I started a little weathering on the bomb bay and gear bay doors.   I started with a light wash of a mix of black and burnt umber.  Almost used as a filter.  When that is dry I will do a pin wash of raw umber and maybe a streak here and there.  I don't want to overdo it.  I will snap a few pics of each step and show the progression.

The SAC camo scheme called for the area around where the wings sweep back into the fuselage to be painted white.  I used some decanted Rustoleum paint for that.  Much easier to use that white model paint.  I will grab a pic or 2 of that as well.

I will repaint the horizontal stabs after I finish a few other things.  I at least want to feel like I am moving forward not taking another step back.  Althogh this problem was self-induced.

Don, yeah I figured at some point a relaxing build would be too much to ask for! The gap exists on both sides and to top it off, the nose cone doesn't align perfectly. Its a pick your poison situation here....no matter the position I try to fit this in, I either wind up with a misaligned nose cone, the gaps that you see there, or a severe top fuselage "over bite" along the seam if you will. Not sure what I'm going to do as, like you, my sanding and rescribing is not up to par....

Well, I dilly-dallied long enough on this I think...I've finally started!

Not much to show though...as a refresher, its the 1/72 Italeri Panavia Tornado IDS. I'm building this strictly out of the box for the most part I think. Hopefully it'll shape up to be a relaxing build.
The cockpit is mostly done. Please excuse the quality of my WIP photos, I take them with my cell phone because its easier to email them straight to my account rather than upload them from my digital. Completed pics will be taken with my better camera.

In test fitting I've found that it will NOT be a relaxing build as I've got some nasty gaps between the fuselage halves. Boo that. So some filling and sanding and rescribing is in order here....

Those egg planes really do look like fun kits.  I might have to try one.

Bish, they make for a very relaxed build.

Forgot to mention, my original build I was going to do the F-111C, I got the package I was waiting 7 weeks or so for and it was the wrong item . In the mean time eduard have released the actual F-111C interior sets (I was going to use the F-111A). So I got a refund on that and have a orded the new set from lucky model who should have their stock in in soon (was only released last week).

Welcome back to sanity Andrew ( you wish). Coming along nicely there, i am really tempted to get one of these egg kits.

Well been away due to family post christmas stuff and house guests and everybody seems to be loosing sanity points, must be the cold up there, dont you just love beach days?

Anyways been kept busy with family responsibilities so not much work done. Have the top and centre together and canopy on and masked. Next job is to get it painted then the wings and intakes go on.

They are already glued on.  I might mask off the area around them and prime and repaint.  Man....painting this thing has been a nightmare!

To get rid of it completely, you'll probably have to sand and re-paint.  Try a fine grit paper first and see how that works.  Maybe just taking off the top coat will suffice.  Are the stabs glued on yet?  Be easier if you could remove them to do the work.

I am on paint hold here, looks like the temps wont be warm enough till the end of the week. Both cold and damp seem to mess with Tamiya paints.

Too cold in California to paint!?!!  What ever happened to global warming

That's OK though since I'm also on hold until I can make a trip to the LHS this weekend for supplies.

OK.  I got the bay door actuator arms on, the upper section all dullcoted and puched a bunch of holes in plastic....for no reason other than I got a new toy for the work bench.

Then I noticed that the paint on the horizontal stabs have some orange peel after the dullcote dried....hmmmm.  I got kinda mad so I didn't get any pics.  I may have to repaint them.  Ugh!

So close...yet....so far!

Don, did you happen to buy a little hammer to go with your punch set or did you already have one suited for this tool?  I ordered their hammer with the brass tip and a plastic tip with the wood handle.  It listed at $14.00.   Seems nice and well balanced.  As soon as I hit my finger with it I will probably throw it across the room though.

Yes, I did.  Nice little tool.  I think that you'll enjoy the punch set.  Sems to be well made and so far in my experience, it has worked flawlessly.

Think that I came up with another solution for the fabric covers, but I'll have to check my Evergreen stock to see if I have the sheet that I'm thinking of.  I'm also taking Vetteman's suggestion and looking again in the wife's sewing supplies for fabric or cloth that might work.  Let you know how things progress.

I sprayed some dullcote on the Bone last night.  I have to spray another coat on tonight to get rest of the wings that were hidden in the swept position while coat 1 was sprayed on.

 I also got the horizontal stabs in place too.  I wanted them to be at a 15-20 degree angle but I couldn't get them to stay like that so they are level with the ground.

Then I spent a little while cleaning my airbrushes up real good.  I haven't given them a good cleaning in a few painting sessions.  They were due. 

Tonight I hope to get all the bay doors weathered a bit and get all the actuators connected as well.  If all goes well I should be done this week.

I got my punch set today from Micro Mark.  It looks promising.

Thanks guys for the encouragement and kind words. I dont think the Revell kit is a bad one, heck I have 2 more in the stash but it does have a few seam problems.

O well, it was worth a try. It certainly looks very much like the real thing.

I tend to go through phases. When i am in camp and try not to get carried away online, or i get no modelling done. When i am at home and can't build, i make up for it by spending more time on here. I thought the third bar was for 1,500. I am just trying to get to 2,000 before i go away.

Trial and error.  It seemed a good strategy but in the end, I just didn't think that the elastic band was a good mimic for the wing shrouds.  I did like the way that the elastic weathered with the oil washes, but I think it's on to plan B.

BTW, you have been busy posting!  Congrats on your third green bar.  Keep it up and you'll end up in a desk job at HQ.

I've run into a bit of an obstacle with the covers for the B-1B wings.  The center part in the photo of the real thing shown below was pretty straightforward to make from plastic card.  First the real thing...

And my version...

For the cloth covers, I planned to use elastic strips that I found in my wife's sewing kit.  I cut them to shape and painted each with oil washes of paynes gray and burnt umber. 

Trouble was that after I glued one set in place, the thickness of the elastic strips and their texture seemed well out of scale.  In addition, the striations on the 1:1 version are vertical whereas the the elastic strip showed strong horizontal lines.  In the end, I was unhappy with the result, so off they came.   I'm back to the drawing board.  Next try will probably be with plastic card that I'll try to scribe to mimic the vertical lines of the real covers.

So close to finishing, yet still not there yet.

BTW, YipYaps aren't half bad....

This kit needs a lot of filler and sanding for sure, but I am seeing the end of the tunnel.

As you can see in this last picture I am trying to smooth out that ugly seam in the intakes. This is the 3rd fill and sand session and they are starting to look good.

EDIT (after viewing Osprey pics):  $@%@ %#@#@  Nice job on the flaps but I can see how the kit is trying to beat you into submission.  ... It's a heavyweight fight;  in the middle rounds..,   both fighters are getting weary..., it will be just a matter of stamina and which fighter might land the lucky blow that sends the opponent reeling...
