Thanks for the tip!  If the Tamiya one ends too high, I'll go with the RM.

I started on the MiG tonight, but nothing really photo worthy yet.  I spent a few hours smoothing out the inside surfaces of the front fuselage halves, filling numerous ejector pin marks.  Also smoothed out the inside of the tailpipe and glued that together.  Gotta stop by the LHS tomorrow to pick up some paint for the office, then should get some pics.

Well , I've been flat out with some other projects of late but I did find some time for a little WIP on my current Korean War builds ;

I re-glued the fuselage halves and wings back on the C-47 and have started to put together the C-46 Commando ...

I extended the cargo floor to accommodate the open fuselage doors and I replaced the bulkheads with some spares from the Academy B-17 kits...

I'll glue the fuselage halves together next , they fit quite well , however the wings aren't the best fit ; An Air America C-46 I've been working on gave me some grief trying to fit the wings !!!

I also broke out a Korean War Heller AD Skyraider and an Airfix 0-1E Bird Dog ;

Both kits are quite basic , so they should make for fun quick build , I've airbrushed the interior pieces with some interior green ;

Here are a few pictures of the completed Sea Fury ... as I said earlier, this has to be just about the worst kit I have ever come across ... absolutely nothing fit correctly ...

I am NOT pleased with the results and am almost embarrassed to show these photos ... I can do much better work than this ...

F-84F Thunderjet to be completed tomorrow and I'll have pictures of that to share with all ... also, I picked up a Dash 30 F-86 Sabre Jet today, which I am going to finish in the colors of the South African Air Force ...

Thanks for the kind words ... back in the old days, this would have been a candidate for shooting to pieces with a BB gun or blowing it up with a firecracker ... I am sorely disappointed with the kit and my build of it ...

Oh well ! - the Thunderjet is coming along nicely and will erase the bad memory of the Sea Fury ... and I've just started an F-86 from the SAAF ... pictures of both are forthcoming ...

WOW!  Such epic work by all involved!  I'm also doing some kits of as much as I can find of all of the equipment used in the Korean War.  I'm no where near as good as you folks, but I'm having fun doing it.  I'm a US citizen teaching English in a Korean elementary school.  I am putting all of my kits in my class room so that the students can see them.  I've actually gotten two kids involved in model building, so far!

My next kit is gonna be a 'big' kit, like a B-29, cargo plane, or multi-engine a/c of some sort.  I can't say how much the repost of the Cobra Co. mod of the F7F3-N by Paul Boyer has opened my eyes.  I missed out on the Octopus kit (and one other company, can't remember whom) five times on ebay and just sprung for the Cobra Co. mod.  I'm SO THRILLED now!  I'm building not just a/c, but the ground equipment as well, and all in the same (relative) scale.  I'm a builder of 1/72 (God's OWN scale) and have strayed into 1/76 for some armour.

A large majority of my kits I had to buy on eBay because they were out of production/hard to find.  But everything that I _COULD_ get in Korea, I did!  I think you'll all like what I did with the Academy 2.5 ton truck.  The detailed engine was as fun as all get out!  And I did a modification of an Airfix jeep (the one that comes with the LVT-A4 water buffalo) into a 75mm recoiless rifle jeep.

Pepper: From the photos you posted she looks good to me. All the parts straight, the paint looks even, the demarcation lines look perfect, no silvering on the decals etc so she looks like a solid build as far as I can tell. I won't even post some of my disasters.

Draken: Welcome to the forum! I'd thought at times at trying to get a job teaching English in Korea or Japan but well I'm too old now and I'm not sure anyone would want me teaching them English with a Southern accent .

Very nice website, I'm at work so I only have time to glance at it but I'll be looking it over in more detail later. Please join in and post some of your stuff as you work on it. I'd love to see a photo of your classroom with your students and your models if you don't mind as well.

Draken, thanks for taking a look and adding the link to that site. I bet Helo could add a ton of stuff there since it is all 1/72. I am heartened to hear that you are showing your pupils about the stuff used in the war and getting them involved with models. Especially considering the situation there today.

Pepper, your Sea Fury came out nice. My only critique of improvement is to suggest you pick up some of the Tamiya Weathering "compacs". They have one with a soot color that makes for superb exhaust and gun stains very easily. Far superior to dry brushed and even airbrushed.

Your photos are great ... the weathering is very realistic, subtle but 'there' ... I am impressed ...

I'd used some Bragdon's powder for the big dirty exhaust smear on the Sea Fury and it looked great until i shot the Dullcote on to seal the decals and the powders ... everything else turned out good but the exhaust area went from being nicely done to a swath of little tiny dots ... held in my hand and looking at it up close, the nicely done exhaust looked like someone went wild with a polka dot stencil  and a heavy duty paint sprayer :-( ... oh well ... and, of course, there was no way to reverse the effect short of repainting and re-decaling (and having no other decals made that a problem) ...

I've seen the old Sikorsky helo in these pages - can't remember the designation now, but do remember building one up from the Revell kit years and years ago ... can someone ID the helo for me and tell me where they picked it up ? ...

Certainly would 'preciate it ...

I've already re-done the exhaust soot and grime and it looks markedly better ... I've never had the problem before, shooting Dullcote over the powder, so was completely surprised by the results on the Sea Fury ... ah, live and learn, I s'pose ... works great on all my trains though ...

Wow. What can I say. I just spent the last three hours (occassionally getting side tracked) trawling through the last 60 pages, well at least the three glasses of Irish Whisky and all the pretty pictures helped make the words easier.

Some really great builds. Sorry if I dont mention individually it would take me another hour to type it all out.

My choice for the GB was going to be an Academy F-86E, I even picked up Alclad to try for the first time, but there is just to many wingy things in here already and not enough armor and the postman delivered my T26/M26 Pershing today (Dragon Orange Value Kit with Anti Tank Team). So I'll worship the darkside and build the Pershing. Will be starting in the next day or two (not tonight cause its 2am now after all that reading LOL)

Well, finished up two more kits over the weekend.  The Airfix 0-1 in NMF USAF colors and the MPM (? not sure) L-4 in Army colors.  I don't have photos...  Yet.  The O-1 is on the stand provided, the L-4 is sitting on the ground.  I was trying to cut the prop out and as I put the knife to the end of the prop it went *POINK* and one half (including the hub!!!) went flying off into never-find-this-part-again land.  I've since installed a tep hub and am planning to cut a circle of clear plastic and make a 'spinning' prop for it.  This will be my first attempt, so we'll see what happens.

The next kit is gonna be fun, I'm not sure if I want to do the William's Bros. C-46 or the Italeri C-47.  The Commando will be in ROKAF colors (NMF with Roundel and bars) and the C-47 will be in NMF with Arctic Orange tail and wing tips, USAF markings.  The third option is the F7F3-N Cobra Co. Conversion.  It's looking ore and mmore interesting as the days go by.  I've got decals enough to make it work, but I'm just not sure if I want to dig into something that detailed at the moment. 

If worse comes to worst I can always do the Matchbox F3D-2 Skynight...  That'll be OOB with folded wings.

Good news!

I won the decal sheet I needed on Ebay, so I will be able to model "2057" as she appeared during the conflict.  I will build her as she appeared in North Korean markings, and save the USAF markings for the next one.

Pepper: OUCH! Sorry to hear about the accident, even if you didn't really like how the Fury came out still I hate to see a model wrecked like that.

I did get the K1A1 drybrushed, not sure if I'll hit her another time even lighter or not. Guess I'm down to adding the wheels, treads, and small parts. Then painting the stowed items and painting the crew. I'm hoping to do a small dio as a base. Sorry the photo quality isn't the best.

Decals are on the Panther but as you can tell they still need a little clean-up. Thankfully they went on rather well, only problem is using Mister Decal Softener on the bottom insignia softened the Future I used as a gloss coat! It turned sticky and I couldn't move the decal and had to peel it off destroying it. I found a spare one almost the same size. Guess that's why I always do the bottom decals first.

Nice to see everyones work, sorry to hear about the accidents.

Gonna post a few pictures of my work so far.  The specific models here haven't been able to make it to my web page.  Google has changed something that makes it a serious pain to get into the site and edit it.  I currently have to log out of EVERYTHING I'm logged into, delete all info from my browser, close the browser, restart it, and only THEN can I edit the site.  Irritating...

Anyway, I've got pics of my Airfix Firefly (HORRID KIT!!!), the O-1, L-4, the F9F-3, and the jeeps I just finished.  In the picture of the jeeps is a resin water tank trailer (first resin kit ever for me!), an Airfix jeep kit, an Airfix jeep that came with the LVT-4, a metal radio jeep kit (first ever metal kit for me!), and a scratchbuilt rocket launcher.  The rocket launcher was used to great effect by the USMC during the conflict, and is quite easy to make.  It uses the same carriage as the 37mm Anti-tank Gun in the Hasegawa jeep kit.  I used egg shell carton (the only PS plastic I can get here in Korea!!!) for all of the flat pieces and Plast-truct styrene rod for the tubes.  I'm amazed that I found a single hobby shop with Plas-truct!  For more info on that there's a US Army video on Youtube and I first read about them in the book "The Final Crucible."

I'm going to be buying the Heller (nee' Airfix) kit because it has the correct Korean War markings, and then I want to build it as one of the naval dam busters that flew the last torpedo bomber mission recorded.  The USN was called in to destroy a dam controlling a reservoir that could've flooded the Han River.  For more info on that check out the book "Crimson Skies."  I've got a torpedo from an Airfix Dauntless kit that I'll have to modify, but other than the box around the fins at the back, it's the right unit.

Well. I'm looking on the bright side of the whole thing - I didn't waste any BB's or firecrackers (like from the old days) to put it out of its misery :-) ...

The Thunderjet is looking mighty fine and I should have all the little fiddly pieces and the canopy  on yet today ... then, just the last of the decals and done !! .

Want to get finished as we've got to make a trip to Arkansas later today and I'll not be modeling until we're back ... boo ! ...

I've ben having computer problems of late , which is very frustrating . I seem to have lost a whole lot of WIP pic's from lot's of on going builds . I may have to arrange a computer tech to come to the home and hopfully be able to service the computer without having to take it away .

Who would of thought that you had to be a computer expert to do modelling?  Seriously though, most of my meager computer skills have been gained because of this hobby.

I did manage to get some paint on my mustangs the other day.  Hopefully, they are on the downhill slide now.  John, have you read the F-82 reviews in the latest issue of FSM?  Pretty interesting.

I did notice in the reader gallery section a modeler built a 1/72 scale P-47D finished in ROK markings .

I didn't realize the venerable P-47 served in the Korean War , next time I'm adding items to the shopping basket , I'll grab a P-47 along the way .

John, the P-47 was a "what if" scheme.  The builder mentioned it in the A/C section how the magazine got his caption wrong.  The P-47, even though it would have been better suited than the mustang, it wasn't used.  I guess it must be the January issue the reviews are in.  Both of the kits have strengths and weaknesses.  I would like it if somebody (eduard) would make a p.e. set for the Monogram kit.  The kit is worth the trouble.  In most ways, it is more accurate than the SH kit.

As for me, I forgot to paint the radar. Duh!  I had a couple of issues with the Tamiya acrylic paint.  Not sure what I did wrong, but  not bad enough for a strip and repaint.  Getting myself a new airbrush for Christmas anyways.
