For the duration of the war?  Count me in! 

Andy (DP), when you use oil paint wash, what paint can you use it over, and what do you thin it with?  I am sorry to ask what has probably been asked a million times.  I have been in the Artist Paint section of a couple of craft stores, and I am always unsure of what to buy.  Then I saw water based oils too.  Any help would be appreciated.  The Finscale articles I've read make me feel like I'm missing something?  Plus, a lot of times they use exotic stuff.  It is pretty much Testors/Tamiya, and sometimes Mr Color for me. 

If anyone has any doubt that I can complicate a simple question: read above.

Greg, I use only W&N oil paints and Mona Lisa Odorless Thinner as shown in the picture below.  I believe they can be found easily at either Hobby Lobby or Michael's.  I brought mine at HL. 

Before I used the thinned oil paint, I sprayed couple coats of Model Master Lacquer Overcoat (Lusterless Flat) to protect my previous enamel and acrylic paints.  Learned this from wbill and it worked very well so none of my recent builds have been ruined.  Brought it at LHS Hobby Town USA... 

I tried water based oil and I didn't like it because I couldn't get it to flow freely like real oil paints.  Hope this helps...

SP: Awesome!!! Depending on how things go I may toss in my 1/35th Dragon M46. I didn't think I'd have time to get it anywhere near done but with the extension I just may. 

Gamera,I was thinking of tackling one of the same... the build will be fairly simple (not counting tracks)... but that killer tiger paint job will be time consuming...

DP, thank you very much.  That is what I needed to know.  I have both a Hobby Lobby and Michaels less than ten minutes away.  And I already have plenty of Model Master Flat Laquer.  Time to print a coupon, and go shopping.

I'll sign up for an extension. Classes start June 1 and I'm nowhere near done on the MiG. Fit issues abound with this crappy Trumpeter kit. Wings are glued together after I cut the locator pins so they would fit up right, does anybody at Trumpeter know anything about Quality Control? It doesn't help that I've mislaid my filler putty, need to go by Hobby Lobby to see if they have some. Need some for the "Old Dog" B-52 "India" that I'm doing for the Stealth GB. We won't mention anything about the "Doublebolt" P-47 I'm building for the 8th AF GB. Nothing at all.

Helo- I am going to watch your WIP on C-47 with interest.  My dad served in Air National Guard during the Vietnam War and he told me he rode in this plane often.  I will ask him for more details...

Guys- Here's an update on my Chaffee... I think it is almost completed.  Little more dirt then I am going to call it DONE!  I applied heavily thinned Raw Umber oil paint on the tank. 

It helps bring out the details.  Here's an example... BEFORE:

I am going to try different posters... last time I used darker blue poster and it didn't work out.  Now I am using lighter blue poster and I don't think it is any better.  I think I will try either black or white poster tomorrow.  What do you use? 

 I am going to add burnt umber oil paint to the wood handles and drybrush the tracks using MM Steel next.

I'm building a 1/72 Monogram F-82G, I'd like to put it up here.  I'm doing a pretty quick build on it.

SP: I've developed a bad habit in that I can't sit down and watch TV without a bad case of the 'fidgets'. I have to do something with my hands So when I go on vacation I take an AFV kit or two with me and clean up road wheels. The wheels and suspension system on the M46 are done even though I still haven't 'officially' started on the kit yet. 

The vehicle I'm doing didn't have the tiger markings applied so she'll be just plain jane GI olive drab

Still I'm intending to steal um borrow some of deafpanzer's techniques for spiffing up a OD AFV.

Still other than the K1A1 I've done nothing but planes for the last two years or so and I'm getting back into a tread-head sorta mood.

BTW: WOW DP she looks fantastic!!!!!!

Thanks Gamera!  Steal?  Nah, just send me a and we will call it even.  My pleasure to help... I learned all of the techniques from everybody else here in the forums at the same time trying some new techniques.  That's what I enjoy about doing GBs.

Sounds like we need a field trip to Hobby Lobby!

I like the place.  A lot of my home decor has come from there too.  When I was single, I redecorated most of my house from there!  Since then, I now have a LHS.  I try to buy from him, but he doesnt' carry everything.  Like the aforementioned Windsor and Newton Oils.  That and the old standby, Testor's square bottles!

I opened up Italeri's 1/72 C-119C Flying Boxcar

A little interior airbrushing to the fuselage insides and wheel well boxings .

Tomorrow I'll do the same with Monograms SA-16B Albatross , I also have the Yak-9P , O-1E Bird dog and Mach 2's S-51 back in the spraybooth , so I'm finally getting paint on a few builds as well .

Should be a good weekend for getting stuff painted .

Uh, this is going to be insultingly easy, Testors' Model Master Vietnam Brown.  Yep, I crap you not, it's the PERFECT colour for the local dirt.  I even used it to copy the road for my diorama.  i live here, I work here, I love living in Korea, and I love the fact that the local earth is the colour for the FS# for Vietnam Brown.  I just dry brush it on, the best that I can.  I keep in ind the spray and splatter patterns, as well as how turning vehicles can throw poopie where it isn't expected.

Andy the Draken... is that Andy number one or two?  I think I am fourth Andy to join this GB.  Outstanding work on your kit especially the paint job on the Pershing.  Nice details too as I liked how you painted the canisters behind the truck. 

You have answered my question... I was going to ask everybody here what color of sand it is in Korea.  It is very red in Vietnam so I figured maybe lighter red or not.  I haven't had the chance to look at more color pictures taken during Korea War.

Draken thanks for the info on earth color in Korea. Now I know what to use on my Centurion. I was gonna use a lighter color, more long the lines of MM Armor Sand 30277. I presume you mean FS 30219, the tan used in the SEA camo when you say MM Vietnam Brown. One tip you may wanna try is to get the dirt/mud in the resessed treads of your wheels. Thin the suff out as a heavy wash and get it in the recessed tread area. Apply to the rest of the framevehicle as your doing with dry brush. Then do a final dry brush of a dirty gray black on the raised tread area of the tires that contacts the road. The closest that I have been to Korea is Hokkaido in Japan.

I'm having a pretty good weekend so far , with progress on a few builds ;

A little more interior airbrushing on the C-119C Flying Boxcar ;

Some interior painting on the SA-16B Albatross and the AD-4N USMC Skyraider ;

I'm a litttle disappointed with Monogram for not including a cockpit consol and control sticks , so I had to scrounge in the spares box and found a consol and control sticks from a scrapped Nord Noratlas ;

I also finally got some paint on a USMC 0-1E , USAF H-5 and Yak-9P ;

Some glueing on three USMC aircraft , F2H-2P Banshee and F9F-2 Panther and also a AD-3 Skyraider ;

Tomorrow I'll airbrush a Yak-18 and another S-51 and some more interior painting on the C-119C .

Having a great weekend so far , I hope everyone else is making good progress on their builds .

Some little weasel stole the ATG that comes with the Airfix Bren Gun Carrier!  Dangit, that's the second freaking time!  It was there this morning, now it's f'ing gone.  The worst thing is, it's always the gun from the Universal Carrier kit.  GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Well, I'm not gonna build a third, I've got pics of it, that's good enough for me!

Just a thought...  Someone recently mentioned that no one's done any of the ships from the war.  I can't believe that I don't have them on Photobucket, but I've got the Airfix LCM III, the Airfix LCVP, and the SHQ LCI-1 done and sitting on my shelves in the classroom.  I've also go tthe Pegasus LCVP in the stash to be built.  I know that Lindberg has an LSU that is sometimes marked as 1/72, but works out more to around 1/100 and the M-47 included is more like around 1/87 scale.  I've got that at home and might bring it back in August.  What other ships are there?  I'm only going to stick with (at least MARKED as) 1/72, but didn't Monogram and Revell have some of the carriers for that era?  I think that Lindberg also did a DDE or DD that was motorized that would work.  What other ships would be out there?

Well the choices for USN ships are pretty broad... Battleships and carriers down to small craft. Many of the older Revell kits would do. The choices are smaller for the RN: I think their task Force was smaller and centered around carriers. The only proper USN carrier kits I am aware of are the newer 1/700 ones from Dragon. Modified Essex Class before the angle flight deck was introduced.

Stik, RN ships were fairly limited in designs that served out there and even more limited in kits representing them - The RN ships usually consisted of a 'Colossus class' light fleet carrier, 'Town' class light cruiser and escort vessels, destroyers usually being of the WW2 'C' class, Frigates were of the 'Bay' class and sloops of the 'Black swan' class. 

The Australians also had two destroyers, an aircraft carrier and a frigate, the Canadians sent three destroyers and New Zealand two frigates all usually attached to the RN task force for the duration of their tour. I can get a full order of battle up later if anyone is interested?

Would be awesome of you, if you would post that OOB.  ISTR the Dutch, or Danes maybe, sent a hospital ship as well.  Isn't there an Old Revell kit of the Hospital ship Mercy?

That's funny that you would mention ships of that era. One of my other long term projects is a waterline diorama of the ship that my father served on from 1956-57, the USS Hancock (CVA-19). "Long-hull" Essex class carrier. Carried Panthers, Banshees, Furies, and Cutlasses on board. The diorama will include a shelf underneath to store his cruise book properly.

Nice job on the M26 and M27 Draken, dang but it's a big friggin' vehicle even in 1/72nd. Great job on detailing all the little gadgets on the back deck of the tractor.

OK so Im way over due on this GB. Heres the Mig right now. still need to get new decals but other than that its done. Sorry only one picture for now.
