SAR- LOL!  Lesson learned at my end... unfortunately I ordered several Verlinden upgrade sets when I first returned to the hobby so I am stuck with those.  I will think twice before I order more of those... only if they are the only available.  There are plenty of better manufacturers out there but I do LOVE figures from Verlinden... no question about it! 

Stik- Thanks for looking!  Enjoying this build very much because of more scratch building and PE work involved especially for this great GB... thanks to you for being a good moderator. 

Now I am not sure what you meant by headspace and timing for the MG.  Remember I never served in the armed forces for an obvious reason...  please just send me a picture or a link and I will see what I can do. Always learning here in the forum!  

Deaf, your .50 looks incredible! Dont forget to set the headspace and timing on it! (something you do on the real one) Your Chaffee is looking first rate!

deafpanzer- im totally diggin your chaffee, and yes verlinden does require alot of help to make stuff work. but overall i cant wait to see this puppy up and lookin for a "caviar can" to open up!!

Guys in Armors forum was able to help me with the RB Model 50 cal upgrade set.  The 50 Cal MG looks great now and it took me about an hour and half to complete it.  Also assembled the rear stowage box...

Not much update on my Chaffee... last night I had to read every line of instructions from Verlinden.  I have to say it isn't that great and they should have done a better job.  This is to give you an idea what it looks like...

There's diagrams on the back but for only few parts.  It would have been nice if Verlinden does for all parts if possible. 

I have to say highlight marker is a must have tool when you deal with Verlinden upgrade sets. 

PE tools are next... hopefully tonight.  Guys, have a great weekend!

And can I take this opportunity to clear up another common Korean war misconception once and for all. Comet tank DID NOT serve on any Korean battlefield. The nearest they got was Hong Kong. Unfortunately some researchers cant tell the difference between 'in service during the Korean War period' and 'served in the Korean War'. Doctor Cox esque rant over...

Draken, the Walrus never served aboard any Commonwealth ships during the Korean war. A few were still in use at that period - I think with the Antarctic survey flight and one or two squadron hacks but never in Korea! What you may have it confused with is its successor the Supermarine Sea Otter, which served on HMS Theseus and HMS Triumph that I know of. They were generally used as Air Sea Rescue birds.

Colour schemes for the Sea Otter is the same as for the Sea Fury and Firefly - extra dark sea grey on upper surfaces and sky/duck egg green on all lower surfaces. The Royal Navy and the Fleet Air Arm liked to keep everything standardised. Though no black white stripes for the Otter as it wasn't going to be anywhere where it was likely to be shot at by AAA! The RAF Sunderlands were white with sea grey uppers in Korea.

Hey ya folks!

Stupid-ish question here...  Someone said that they found info that the Walrus was aboard the British ships in the Korean War.  I've got the Walrus kit by Matchbox/Revell and need to know the paint scheme.  Was it the white undersides with grey/green tops like WWII and the Sunderlands?  Or something else?  Any info is great!  I did a google search and added the word Kore and it didn't tell me anything.  Although I did end up bookmarking some pages about assembly!

deafpanzer, you Chaffee is looking great!  Those aftermarket items make a huge difference.  Sorry I can't help on the the assembly of the RB machine guns.  The detail looks awesome though.  I am sure someone will be able to give you some tips.

Some Assembly Required, nice work on the cockpit of your Sabre!  I have that kit in the stash so I will have to watch and get a few tips.

SAR- Nice work on the cockpit!  I am with Gamera... decal or paint on the panels.  Either way I loved it even tho I don't do planes but one day I will and it has to be Ju 87 Stuka of course! 

Guys, thanks for the nice comments.  Believe me it made me feel like 15 years old modeling those old kits before I took 25 years break.  AHHH!  Now you know my real age... here's another update.

I have mixed feelings on Verlinden upgrade set.  Brass PE stuff is pretty good but the resin parts, horrible... way too fragile or doesn't fit most of times.  Here's an example... no pin to insert so they will hold so I had to insert pins.  I couldn't use larger pin to fit the existing holes but the resin parts are way too little like the headlights shown below.

Replaced all plastic with cooper wire provided by Verlinden for the handles... it looked alot better and it took me a while to do all 20-22 handles... I lost count.   Notice both jerry can holders cracked... resin parts are so fragile from Verlinden.  I will have to repair those...

That one was easier than I expected... guards for the headlights. I have to admit I like the PE from Verlinden because they were little thicker than other manufacturers.  More handles made of cooper wire...

The turret is almost completed... Verlinden instructions said to replace those "C" shaped handles with same cooper wires used for the handles but I felt it was too thin and the kit provided parts were still good.   

As you can see... still undecided about keeping loader's hatch closed or open?  Will look thru my figures stash to see what I have to go with this. 

Guys, NOW I really need your help... I am not kidding... I am not one of those model gods and it is only my fifth armor build since my return.   How in the world can I assemble 50 cal machine gun from RB Model without directions?!?!?!?!?! 

Brought it via evilBay... usually they come in little plastic bags.  In the past I was able to attach those without instructions but this time it looks more complicated with small parts and I am clueless.  I googled and found a good picture to give me a better idea.

It made me realize I am missing third piece of wood handle and I still can't figure out what that little piece shown at second from the bottom.  Do you have any idea what it is supposed to be?  Help!

SAR: Great looking work on the cockpit. I assume the instrument panel is a decal? Goodness knows I'd never be able to paint something that small.

Draken: The aid station sounds really cool. Looking forward to photos.

Work almost finished on the F9F Panther. All that's left is the canopy and an overcoat of matte varnish. Hopefully finish her off this weekend.

The Chaffee and the Sabres are looking incredible!  I wish that I had the patience and skill for the big stuff.  And the $$$ as well.    Be that as it may...  There were two people here who wanted the KF-16 in 1/72 by Academy.  I picked up one on Tuesday for $16.00[USD] at Cp Casey.  I know that John (Helo_34) was one person, who was the other?  John is taking a hiatus from model building to help his oldies and he hasn't answered the last couple of e-mails, I suppose that the medical issues are kinda important.  Whomever it was that wanted the second kit should email me at:  landrew.hill[at]hotmail.com (replace the [at] with @).  It may take a few bucks to ship from Korea, and I do accept paypal.  Details to be worked out later via e-mail.  If nought else, I'll build it for my principal.    Got to see a couple of Falcons turning tight popping flares the other day.  Looked awesome!

On a second note; I'm currently working on my medical aid station diorama.  I bought a picture frame and left the glass in it, threw a crap load of joint compound on it and left it to dry.  Yes, I know that there will be cracks, you try and find cellu-clay in the RoK...  I've got the building assembled, have all of the supplies I need, I'll be working on the figures when I get the base done and ready for painting.  I've also got the ambulances ready, I'm going to use the ones that I already have built.  Plenty of stretcher individuals now, Airfix, SHQ, and one of my own.  Can't wait to get to the painting stage!

deafpanzer, thats a great start on what im sure is gonna be an awesome tank.  the photoetch and replacement barrel really take it up a notch

after some serious thought i have benched my seafury and will start on acedemys 1/48 f-86.ive only got about a week to get the majority of the work done so... here's what ive done so far.

I built that kit back in college and remember it as being pretty good. Still the aftermarket engine deck vents, drive and idler wheels, plus the new MG make almost an 1000% improvement on this old kit.

Please keep the photos coming! I always thought the M24 was one of the coolest looking tanks, I'm tempted to run out and buy another one now...

Another update on my Chaffee... so far it has been a pleasant experience except for dealing with Verlinden poor instructions. 

Gun fully assembled... now I am thinking about keeping the turret hatches open so everybody can see inside.  Not sure at this moment... gonna fix that crooked guard next. 

I am so glad I made the decision not to use Verlinden resin barrel and ordered RB aluminum barrel...

Assembled and glued fender braces... it took me a while using just two razors.  It made me wish I brought the PE tool set at the model show last Saturday but the vendor wanted $60 for it.  My thumbs are sore from bending and cutting those PEs...   'open' visors were added to the front hatches.

Like I stated earlier I removed the crappy screen from the hull... replaced by resin and screen parts that came with the Verlinden Chaffee AM set.

I forgot to post this picture... it is going to make you chuckle.  It looks like Italians are very proud of their workmanship that you can't miss it on the bottom of hull.  Unlike DML kits which I love we don't see those except for old models...  I will leave it there to remind us how it. 

I have been enjoying all of your WIPs since day one.  Now I have officially started my build M24 Chaffee I signed up for this GB.  This is my first American armor since my return to the hobby two years ago and it is going to make my boys happy that I am taking a break from those German armors. 

Jeez, like I said earlier it is an old Italeri kit and it requires more TLC at my end.  I never had to do alot of chopping and sawing... removed the ugly vents and it will be replaced with Verlinden resin & screen parts. One of two vents has been removed as shown: 

The cannon has been chopped off.  Promise you it will not be missed!  It is being replaced with an aluminum barrel from RB I bought via evilBay for only $6.  I was not impressed with the resin barrel that came with Verlinden Chaffee set either...

Also I am opting for AM wheels... you can see why.  The kit wheels didn't come with holes... huge difference there.  Brought from FSM fellow for only $10 along with resin tracks...

The lower hull was a perfect fit...

The wheels stage is completed... I never liked that part.  Dry fitting just for the picture... Chaffe, please smile!  

Once again, the old kit machine guns were horrible... you can see bumps instead of holes on the kit barrels so I am having them replaced with RB barrels.  Those AM barrels were about $5 each...

 It looks like it will end up with many aftermarkets and I am loving it so far.  Hope to post an update soon... thanks for looking.

Found a great resource for you armour freaks and everyone in this GB doing armour.  A dude went to the UK Bovington Armour Museum and took tons of pics, there's lots of Korean War era stuff mixed in.

It was a great help building my Churchill Bridging tanks.  I'm finally finishing the Matchbox/Revell that Helo finished much earlier.  It's evil, pure evil!  Nothing fits, and the instructions (early Matchbox) are really vague in some important areas.  Needless to say, I'm not really ecstatic about this kit.

Another reason for the NMF...  Every pound of paint is a few knots less speed and climb rate.  Especially for the biggies!  Primary reason for the B-36 not getting the originally planned OD upper and Camo grey lower paint was that it would knock ceiling by about 5,000+ feet and max speed by about 40kts.  And that's IF they went with a decreased bomb load.

OB on topic:  Working on the Matchbox/Revell Churchill AVRE bridgelayer and it's a complete bastadge!  HATE IT!  Finally got the sponsons to sit okay and not look like craaep, and the hull doesn't fit correctly to them!  The front glacis is warped up, and the bottom hull is too narrow aking the sponsons sit like a V on the hull.  ARGH!

some experiments were tried with camo on fighter jets but it was not proven to be effective at the time. Low level and night fighting aircraft were a differnt story.

Change of topic - this morning i was looking at pictures of the USS Intrepid Air Museum in New York City ... there are 2 Korean War Migs on display, 1 camo'd in green/brown - the other, blue/gray ... my question is - does anyone know why the USAF continued to have their jets in Korea in NMF ? ... sure seems they'd 'glitter' in the sunlight and be able to be spotted by the Mig pilots from way off ? ...

Not being a jerk, but are you using Firefox?  If you are, then you need to update.  If not, then you should probably install the latest edition and use it.  I haven't had any problems yet with Ffox and the smileys, but had horrible issues with IE (I'm also using linux on my home machine, makes for interesting bedfellows!).  Just a thought.

Yep!  Thanks Gamera!  I've got the Italeri 1/72 T-34/76 on my web site.  I'm not sure how to post the link here, every time that I try it ends up being removed.  I'm guessing that it's just because of FSM not wanting spam, and that's a spam answer I'm willing to abide with. 

And looking with Chrome I can't even FIND IT!!!!    Sometimes the 'new' web (as opposed to what I originally learned on back in the eighties really irritates me!  Too danged graphic for us old farts.
