Draken here is a good account of the 1st drop by the 187th RCT in Oct 1950. No 75mm or 105mm guns mention, but there are 90mm AT guns and 4.2" mortars listed. Lots of good pics too!

HOLY MOLY DRAKEN!!!!!! SurpriseDid you ALL of these kits for this GB??? Or are some previous builds your showing on here to keep in the theme? If there are all part of the GB I gotta do some cutting and pasting to get them all on page one here. It looks like Helo John has a competitor for most active builder here...Toast In any case a very nice Korean War collection of yours.

Helo H-34

the mud looks very realistic .

I used Testors' Model Master Vietnam Brown (The printed info is worn off of my bottle, FS34102?) and then for the puddles used the gloss coat in drops.  I then oversprayed everything with men's hairspray (Hey, do I get extra points if the spray can is camoflaged?  No crappin'!  It really is!) to hold the light stuff in place and give it the satiny, not totally gloss sheen.  I've had really good luck with this in the past.  For a flat look I spray Testors' dullcoateCrying over everything, but I can't get spray cans of that here in Korea.  Crying  Right about now, I'd give almost anything for some REALLY good US spray cans, but no one ships them surface from the states.  Damned terrorists...

Okay, I've _FINALLY_ gotten around to not only taking photos of the kits I've finished and brought to work, but also putting them on the web!  Here's a few of my more recent ones that I haven't posted to the group.  I still have the WIP of the diorama on an SD card at home, so those won't go up for a while.

Here's the Pegasus M-26:

Next here's the Airfix Churchill AVBL:

Next is the Revell/Matchbox Churchill AVRE/Bridge Layer

Revell/Matchbox Humber and Hasegawa Daimler:

If you look closely you can see that the vehicle commander is a ginger with hairy arms...

Now the Yak-18 and teh Yak-9P:

The Amodel Yak-18 isn't too horrible, It went together kinda quick and wasn't too badly out of line.  I did have to do some filling and sanding, not as much as usual with Amodel subjects, though.  It has dropped aeilerons from the factory.  Unless you want to cut and reposition them, you're going to be building it gear down.  And they are typically like that when it's on the ground.  At least the vehicle in the Korean War Memorial Museum is the same way.

The ICM Yak-9P is a nice little unit, but you have to cut out the fuselage to make the window for the RF aerial.  A pain in the keester, unless you just want to paint that area silver or something.  Otherwise, not too bad.

Next up is the Monogram/Revell AG F-82G Twin Mustang:

I know, the F-82 is already up, and that's cool, I'm building the majority of these kits for me and my students.  Cool

Here's something you don't see too often, the 1/72 SHQ metal 105mm Airborne Howitzer and gun crew.  I figured that it and the 76mm were probably dropped in the two airborne drops so I purchased and included them.  I've already put up the 76mm.  Here's the 105mm.

Now comes my baby...  The Field Aid Station Diorama.  I'm very happy with how it turned out.  I used drywall joint compound for the base on a picture frame.  Then it was spray painted and then some brush paint was used.  The materials on the road (rocks/sand/brush) are all natural materials from outside my apartment, and the 'rice stalks' are from a grass that's outside my apartment.  It's supposed to represent a rainy day at a surgical aid station near the front.  A sign along the road says that the Main Line of Resistance is 2000 yards away.  I made up a unit number (712th) and put it under the 2nd ID.  The two ambulances were already built earlier, as was one of the stretcher units.  The rest of the figures came mostly from SHQ (metal), the house from Airfix, one stretcher case was with the house and so was the radio and operator.  The tarps are kleenex that are spray painted OD green, the water tank is a resin kit from England (can't remember manufacturer).  The rest of the gear and equipment came from all over.

So, anyway...  That's what I've been doing since the B-29 was finished.  I don't know what I'm going to start on next.  Maybe the C-47 or the C-119.  I'd like to have some airborne troops inside the Dakota ready jump, and maybe a vehicle ready to be pushed out the back of the Boxcar.  We'll see what happens.

Finally, some progress pics on the MiG!  I spent a lot of time this weekend sorting out the seams on the forward fuselage, nose ring, and wings.  I glued the tail together tonight, hope to sort that out later this week.  I put her up on her gear, and yep- she looks like a MiG!

Spent a lot of time sorting out this area.  A lot of inserts and panel lines running through them all.  A lot of CA, sanding and re-engraving and I think it is sorted out now.

Hi Andy and all:

Teriffic links and what I needed ... somewhere along the line, I  had a brain fa*t and could not, for the life of me, figure a way for sandbags or even tools and materials ...

If I get this to work OK, I've a diorama in mind that I can put together easily - easy even for me :-) - and hope it will be an asset to the GB ...

OK, all ... just finished painting, top to bottom the Sabre Jet I've been working on - seems like forever, but we've finally some decent weather and i can airbrush without the paint freezing before it hits the model :-) ...

WIP photos tomorrow ...

News from Academy:  The 1/72 F-4B Phantom is not to be.  Or at least not this year.  It's released in 1/48th!    The've got an all metal (at least it LOOKS it from the demo model) version of their R.M.S. Titanic.  A 1/32 Sopwith Camel and Nieuport 17.  Their releasing an F-1F UAE limited edition of their Falcon in 1/32 scale, and new tool item in 1/48th is the ROKAK T-50.  Everything else in big stuff is limited edition (read as , we're going to be Hasegawa and charge extra for the same kit with someone else's decals).  The 1/72 and smaller folks only get a single 'new' kit this year.  The F-22, and looking in the box it's definitely worth the $18.00  USD that I paid for it!  AWESOME looking unit with both clear and smokey parts, as well as full weapons kit.  It includes full compliment of two JDAMS, four AIM-120C's, 2XAIM-9X and 2XAIM-9L's and includes the external ferry tanks.  Weirdly enough, in the clear parts (remember, there's two sprues of identical parts in different shades) are both the weapons bay doors (open and closed) and the gear bay doors!!!  This could make for some exciting builds!  The decals are from Cartograph (Yeah, they'll actually stay on the kit!) and include aircraft representing two squadrons at Hickam AFB, one in Alaska, and the 94th at Langley.  This is a truly beautiful kit and has everything you need for an epic build! Ships have the 1/350th HMS Warspite, and the rest of the swale is as per usual with a few kits being release with PE parts.

Armour will be getting a new tool M-1151, price to be announced, and the Merkava Mk IV LIC with extra new parts.  They're also re-releasing the M-3 Grant with "El Alamein" decals and extra parts.  Nothing new in 1/72 armour which is incredibly disappointing!  They are now pushing heavily into the motorized 1/48 scale stuff, a total of 13 kits with a large percentage being very modern stuff!

In Korean War Build news, I picked up a motor tool (battery powerd disposable type thing) so that I can open the gun ports on my Starfire when I build it, some new brushes, some new spray cans, and two of the trucks with ground equipment.  The 1/76 resin stuff from England has .50 cal Ma Deuces in several parts, I'm REALLY not keen on that!  I'll swap the 1/72 M-2's from the Academy kits.  And I needed some vehicles for my bridge dioramas anyway.  I'll use the Airfix bridge for a cargo convoy and the Verlinden Treadway bridge for an armour crossing.

Been making progress this past week on the MiG-15.  She still isn't much to look at yet, but the front fuselage is done as well as the wings.  The tail is glued together now, and I hope to join the wings to the front fuselage tomorrow.  I will post some pics once those are on. Yes

Pepper, I have seen this topic several times especially very recently but I can not locate the post.  I tried the search tool and it couldn't be found.  Maybe Stik knows what I am talking about.  Guys in the Armors would use clay readily available at local store like Michaels' or Hobby Lobby and cut them into right scale.  Use an old T-shirt to be pressed on to show the texture of fabric.  It looked alot better than those plastic sandbags for sure...

I found one... /forums/p/114710/1144779.aspx#1144779

/forums/p/129443/1311329.aspx#1311329

I will make sure to send you a link if I can find that great post about how to make sand bags.

Andy , your First Aid Station dio sounds like it's coming along nicely , your certainly are putting a lot of work into it . I still haven't heard back from image shack regarding how to access my pic's , so I'll send another email request .

Pepper , sorry I can't help with the sand bags ; I would also like to know of an easy way to make some ?

Dr Win , good luck with Kopro PO-2 . I have the same kit in the stash , so I will interested as to how she goes together .

Yesteday I did some airbrushing on the AJ-1 Savage as well as a few light coats on some of the maintenance equipment .

I've been reading through some of my Korean War books to see what other aircraft were deployed to K-3 Pohang in early 1953 . I am now thinking of expanding my dio to include a few more builds , some of which would also be undergoing maintenance .

So I have added a Heller AD-3 Skyraider with part of the engine cowl access panel removed to show some of the engine and the kit comes with a basic wing fold . Along with the Italeri H04S-3 also undergoing maintenance with the tail boom seperate from the cabin section and the rotor shaft access panels removed .

One of my books mentions that the R4D-1 Skytrain was also a frequent visiter to K-3 ;

Also the F9F-2 of VMF-115 ;

There was also the PB-1W deployed as well .

So I dug out from under the bench the C-47 Skytrain and I think I can scrounge together some UNITED STATES MARINES markings for a R4D-1 .

After pulling the wings off the PB-1W to fix the dhedrial and watching the fuselage halves come apart at the same time as well I have managed to get everything glued back together .

I bought Airwaves wing fold set for the Hasegawa F9F-2 Panther ;

Instructions on how to do the wing fold are quite vague to say the least , it only mentions about glueing together some of the small hinge pieces for added strength but doesn't show how or where they fit on the wing .

Does anyone know of a nice close-up pic of a Panther wing fold , I think that would help me a lot in figuring out how to do it . As for the markings on the Panther , there are some USMC decals in Revell's F9F-4/5 and I can use some of those and I have some white alphabet decal sheets to use for the 'AE' tail code .

So that's about it , I was thinking of adding a F4U-4B but I wasn't sure which squadron was operating from K-3 Pohang in '53 and it would also depend on what markings would be on the corsair , especially if there were squadron logo's on the aircraft ?

The board for the dio will be about 900mm x 900mm with some of those eduard psp display plates included , so hopfully it should look okay with six or seven aircraft positioned around the board .

Hey guys, for my next build I shall be doing a 'bedcheck Charlie'. Have just taken delivery of a new Kopro P0-2. The've cleaned up the tooling and issued it with NKPAF & PLAAF markings as an added bonus. Might build it with my older P0-2 from the stash and sell one on... Any interested parties PM me!

Two down, what seems like a bazillion to go!

I finished the Amodel Yak-18 on Tues., brought it into the classroom today.  None of the kids has noticed it yet.  I also made a serious point of working on the Aid Station diorama that I've got going.  It's been painted for over a week, today it essentially got finished.  I went around the apartment and found some dried grass that look very much like harvested rice stalks. and got everything together and started gluing stuff down.  It has the Academy Dodge Ambulance, my Scratchbuilt Jeep ambulance, a few converted figures, the Airfix 1 ton trailer, A water trailer, some sandbags and gear from various sources and is built around the Airfix "Forward Command Post" house.  I included the radio and operator from that, a stretcher patient, and scrounged figures from various sources including SHQ.

I'll load the photos asap...

Yes, that's my article, John.  Thank you.  The base was built by a friend of mine, James Steel, now departed.  He was a fine modeler but in poor health.  I supplied the raw materials and we collaborated on ideas to build a cold war alert pad complete with dog dish.  The ground equipment is primarily from a Revell F-102 kit from the 50's that had that in it in one of its releases.  We did scrounge some but not all wheels from various sources to improve the look.  The fence is a fine mesh net fabric painted red and white and supported by aluminum "posts".

I'm on the road so I don't have the bottle in front of me, but it came from a set of Model Master British WWII colors and is labeled Olive Drab, I'm guessing it was intended for a Firefly. I have one color picture from Korean War Shermans and the color looked a little different from the WWII US OD, so I went with something different. I think it provides some contrast to all the WWII armor on my shelf.

Thank's again everyone for the kind thoughts and wish's regarding my dad .

Andy [The Draken] I tried to log into image shack and couldn't access my pic's , I keep getting the password wrong . So I sent them an email asking for their assistance . I didn't realize that you couldn't see the pic's that I posted .

Pepper , my email is tgy7@ozemail.com.au

It also sounds like you have been through the wars a little yourself .

John [jeaton] thank's for posting the two pic's , for some reason I dry fitted my landing gear struts the wrong way around , the pic's you posted show the wheels on the outside of the struts , not facing inwards like I did .

Am I right in saying that the article in the cuurent issue of FSM about building the Monogram 1/48 F-101B is by you . It is an excellent article and build . I really like the last pic in the magazine of the completed F-101B , especially the maintenance  equipment in the background and the fence line as well . I'm thinking of adding some fence section to my AJ-1 Savage dio . I also really like the work platform , I was wondering how did you make the wheels for all the maintence equipment , I wanted to add some wheels to my 1/72 scaffold section .

I started some preliminary airbrushing on the Savage last night , just a few light coats around all the area's that had a lot of putty and everything looks pretty good , so I'll continue tonight with some dark blue .

Stikpusher-   I am thinking it would be easier to glue them to the tank before the painting stage.  Later...

I am gonna have to give that technique a try one of these days....Hmm

I have seen how some folks at the local AMPS chapter pull that off beautifully...Surprise

Helo-  I am sorry to hear about your dad and he will be in my prayers.  B-45 is looking real good.  Believe me I know little about planes!  I only know WWII and modern planes but absolutely little between 1945-1970 so I have been learning a great deal from you guys here.  Thanks for the nice comment on my Chaffee.

Stikpusher-  How can I forget about the pistols being treated as highly valued prizes among soldiers and enemies?!?!?  I am so glad I asked for your feedback.  I will make some changes to the stowage soon.  Thank you again! Beer

Because there are so alot of stowage, I am thinking it would be easier to glue them to the tank before the painting stage.  Later...

John: Sorry to hear about your dad, when you came back I was hoping he was over his problems. Again my prayers that he improves.

The B-45 looks sharp. Just finished off a limited run kit earlier this year and I know how bad they can be.

Btw thanks for the comments on the base. I was just a commercial made wooden plaque (sp?) with some plaster, static grass, and ultra cheap craft store paint. Only hard part was it took awhile to finish since I had to set it aside over night to dry several times.

Deafpanzer: Nice looking storage.  I think it adds alot of interest to a dull plain jane OD green paint scheme.

Tellis: Looking good, please keep us posted as she comes along.

John:

Sorry to hear about your dad's troubles.  I wish him and your family the best.

Here are a couple of photos I have that show the tip tank fins on the B-45 pretty well.  I hope my kit's nose is less crooked, as I want to build the glass nose version.

Using a small piece of blue-tac I sat my fins in position according to the scribe lines that are marked on the wing tip fuel tank , the front one is quite a bit of center , the rear top fin is a little closer to sitting in the center and the larger fin on the rear outside of the tank sits below the middle centerline , is this correct ???

Dad was treated for a lymphomia about three years ago but it looks like it has come back a second time .

John, Liz and i will keep you and your Dad in our thoughts and prayers - been there, done that and no picnic ...

On the tip tanks - I found some photos on Google that may be of help but I don't know how to get them posted here ...

I did see two good shots showing the front and rear fins set as your photo shows but not cocked off center like the kit indicates ... these were straight on the top centerline ... there were slo a few photos that showed the third fin lower, as you have it ...

To complicate matters though, I also saw a photo without the bottom fin ... were it my build, I'd put all 3 on - the top two on the tank centerline and the bottom one just as you have it ...

Hey John,

What's your screen name at imageshack?  All I get for your pics nowadays is a frog in an icecube saying I have to register my domain at imageshack.  I go to imageshack and it won't let me register the domain because I'm in Korea and they don't like us...  (All that bootlegging, go figure.)  Would love to see you pics but can't find you at imageshack.

Thanks!

Well the AJ-1 Savage still hasn't made into the spraybooth as yet , everything is ready to go, however I pressed to hard on the underside of the rear fuselage a couple of times while masking and cracked open the join . So I had to keep re-glueing the join , which was a bit frustrating .

I also made a start on the 1/72 Mach 2 RB-45C Tornado ,

The cockpit does have a bit of detail to it ,

I glued the cockpit to the left fuselage half as it has a small lug for the tub to sit against and there are no loctating lugs for the tub on the other fuselage half , I also pre painted the wheel well insert before glueing into position in the wing sections .

I then glued the fuselage halves together along with the wings and stabilizers , engine pods , wheels etc ,

I then found out that the cockpit tub is a little narrow in width and doesn't quite span to the other fuselage side and with nothing there for the tub to sit on anyway I had to leave as is which is just slightly off being centered in the cockpit opening .

The wings and stabilizers weren't a bad fit into the fuselage , the engine pods on the other hand required a bit of work to fit properly ,

Looking front on the front cockpit section sits on a bit of an angle , I guess it's just the way the two fuselage halves line up when glued together , there's not much I could do about it and with a solid nose piece fitting over the front it won't be seen anyway ,

After quite a bit of sanding and puttying [repeatedly] I manged to get her together .

There are some nice looking engine inlet and exhaust pieces for the engine pods but they are by far the worst fitting parts of the build . I really cursed myself for not fitting them on before glueing the engine pods to the underside of the wings ; there was lot's of sanding and puttying more sanding and puttying to get them to blend in with the engine pods and this was made more difficult by having to hold the completed aircraft in one hand while trying to file and sand with the other ;

Next I test fitted the landing gear struts and wheels and the fit was pretty good ,

Lastly the large wing tip tanks fit okay into position on each wing , however there are three seperate fins to fit on each tank and I'm not 100% sure as to their actual position ,

Other than that the RB-45C Tornado is almost ready for the spraybooth as well .

On a sad note my dad has become unwell again , just when we all thought he had turned the corner and was starting to feel better , a couple of lumps have come up on the side of his neck .

Dad was treated for a lymphomia about three years ago but it looks like it has come back a second time .

He see's the cancer specialist tomorrow , so hopefully he can start the treatment staright away . We are all trying to stay positive but is quite concerning none the less.

Anyway I may get around to starting some airbrushing this week , hopefully  ;

I'm really impressed with all the armor builds , I really like cliff's tank dio , I realized you put a lot of work into the tank cliff but I really like the road base , that really looks awesome , great stuff  all round from everyone .

Deaf Panzer, a bit of feedback on yoru stowage: #1 dont forget tie down straps/ropes. Especially on teh fender stowage, all that stuff will come off very quickly if not secure properly. Lord knows I picked up a lot of field gear that way when I was in the Army from guys who did not tie down down gear and lost it in the field. The packs should best be mounted hanging from the grab handles on the tyurret where the crew can access them more easily. The weapons' scabbard (middle photos on the right fender behind the folded tarp) is not something commonly seen on tanks I would say save it for a jeep or scout car or similar vehicle type. Loose pistol, big No No!!! Not unless you want to lose it to another soldier with sticky fingers. Always on your person where it can be found immediately as needed- shoulder or belt holster. Ammo cans on the fenders...very good... the more the better! The bino case has a mount I am willing to bet inside the turret.

Check out Academy's AFV Accessories sets for Korean War era bags. set I and set II.
