lol, fair enough greg. oh yeah check your hunting after dark GB. i added a new build for me.

Post photos when you can, nice to see this one taking off again. Ill try get some photos up this weekend of the bearcat. The pits coming along nice. I decided to do as much of the PE as i can before i start major assembly since most of the PE is pre-painted.

Just an update. I'm planning to get the aftermarket stuff that I need for my Tomcat so I hope to start at the begining of the year. I'm itching to get it going.

Very nice work in the office there, MikeyToast.

I have an interesting scribing technique to share. Don't know if anyone has ever approached it this way, but is very effective.

Where you have an aileron, flap, cowling , or any part of the skin on an aircraft that overlaps another , I like to make a bit of an undercut along that panel.

My example is where the cowling on my 'Cat overlaps the nose of the fuselage.

The portion above the exhaust has been undercut. You can see the visual depth it creates even before paint and washes. The section along the cowl flaps received a slightly deeper undercut to give more of an opening panel.

 My basic scribing tools.

Cheers guys. Thats a cool tip on the scribing Howard. I try to avoid rescribing where i can.

I got the fuselage and wings buttoned up today as seperate assemblies. A few more PE parts to go in before i can put them together.

A few more wires on the engine and that will be ready to install. I used the kit engine.

Still no idea what im doing with the paintwork. I want to use black and lime green. origianlly i was thinking chevrons. but now im thinking over exadurated  camouflage. But the more i think of that i dont really like the idea.

Any suggestions?

Howard, how do you do your exhaust stubs? Im trying to put some on my bearcat (8 each side if i remember correctly) But im having trouble cutting the brass tube and the tube walls seem too thick.

There is some great work going on here everyone!  I am itching to start this GB but I got to finish up the Lancer and the HRS-2.  Both of which are close to being completed.

Mikey, I tried using a razor saw, not too successful .  Ended up using a thin cut off wheel in my Dremel tool.

Cut the number of segments required around 5mm each, but don't cut all the way through. Then they wont go flying off to parts unknown. Leave just enough so you can break off the last little thread of brass. Some doubled over masking tape is great to store the segments and keep track of them .

Holding a segment in some pliers , clean up and square off the one end  with a needle file.

Next , I chucked a micro drill bit  into a pin vise and carefully reamed out the end of the segment till the walls were the appropriate thickness. The opening in the brass tube acts as a great center and all your really  trying to do is just open up the inside diameter at one end a little. You may be able to use the tip of a needle file as a reaming tool or maybe the tip of a no. 11 x-acto blade.

To help me line up the ends of the "stacks"  I superglued each group to a small scrap of flat plastic and used a straight edge to line them up. Then glued the whole assembly into the exhaust openings.

BTW- Don't forget to protect your eyes and anything else you wouldn't want fine brass filings to get into.

It's a little tedious ,but the effect is worth the effort. I may even try using the technique for gun barrels.

I love your Panther Dean.  That is such a great looking A/C, and you made it shine.  I am also very partial to USMC birds.  Matter of fact, I think I'll actually go work on my photo Panther!  It is humble to yours though.

Cheers,

Greg

Thanks Greg & Mikey.

My research does indeed say Interior Green for inside wheel wells etc. I know alot of early jets were like that. The Trumpeter directions disagree and say white.Toast

The F9F was probably a lot like the USAF's F-105 on that.  The F-105 gear bays and doors were NMF, silver paint, green paint or white paint depending on the individual airplane and time frame.

I'm finally done with the Panther build. I thought I'd give some info on the aircraft, I hope I did justice to.

It's from VMF 311.

From K3 air base, South Korea, Pohang, Korea, 1953.

I understand there are very few pictures of this particular aircraft. Because of that I'm sure there are mistakes in the build.Embarrassed

That is a mighty fine panther. Well done. I love the way youve picked out the panel lines.

Thanks, Kevin & Mikey.

This is the first military plane I have ever done that wasn't dead flat paint. The more glossy paint is tough to do and photograph and etc.

I have been tinkering with the PE landing flaps for the Hobbyboss F4F-4.  I haven't used any photoetch this complex before....so don't expect much.   When I get the flaps together I will post a few pics.

Mikey,

I think this build needs some more incentive photos. I'll see what I can do.Idea

Dean,  I'd love to see that bird setting on a carrier deck with a sky background.  In context, the semi gloss finish would look at home. Great work beside the matter.  When you don't have a lot of references, you do the best you can.  Don't fret any errors of technical matters.  You've put together a great display.  Good construction, good markings.   I'm sure it will display nice, therein lies your success.  We all laugh at ourselves, that we do not build the perfect model.  But they sure do look nice in that little cabinet with the lights on.  Keep up the good work.

Rick.

Rick,

Thanks for the compliments. It was a fun build. Some of the credit goes to Trumpeter for producing a very good kit.

I just started this project last Friday and would like to enter it in this GB.  OK?

Friday and Saturday's efforts:

This is the 1/48 Monogram kit
The obligatory photos of the box content.

Some preliminary work.
The cockpit pieces

Dark Sea Blue brush painted on the nose gear bay

and some miscellaneous pieces

and the wheels

Today's progress report.

I installed the cockpit, engine aft section and tail hook assembly in the left side and then joined the two halves.  I used a little extra glue around the fuselage mating surfaces so when I put them together, the glue/plastic squeezed out a little bit and became it's own filler.  I let it dry for a few hours and then sanded the joint down.  I put the air inlet interior pieces into the bottom wing section and dry fitted the one piece bottom and the two top halves.  They fit fairly well and should require only a small amount of filler.  I dipped the windshield, canopy and ventral camera panel in Future and they are crystal clear.  I also cut out one decal number that I won't be using and applied it to the inside of the wing over top of the embossed trademark words and it snuggled down very nicely with very little of the clear background showing.  The rest of the decals should be quite useable.

A photo of the current status

Comment pro or con welcome

Tuesday's progress report:

I glued the bottom wing to the fuselage while very carefully aligning the mating surfaces.  They didn't fit quite right, so I glued the leading edge of the wing center section to the fuselage, let that dry for awhile and then glued the trailing edge of the center section and the aft fillet.  After all that was dried, I glued the two top wing halves in place and taped/pinned them together overnight so that the glue would have plenty of time to set up.

Pinned up last night

Unpinned and ready for the next step this morning.

Hiya, hiya:

From the oh so cold Texas, I've decided on my build ...

I'll be doing an F7F Tigercat in an unusual paint scheme ...

Scale will be 1/72 and I'll have WIP photos tomorrow night ...
