Hi peeps,

Nice GB about an interesting subject you got goin here T-bolt!Yes If my timetable allows a swift build i would like to join if possible.

I have a RoG 1:72 Me262A-1a in my stash that looks tiny but sweet and today i just picked up a 1:72 Horten Go229 flying wing from the same manufacturer but i don't see it on the list on page 1?

Got my mind set on the Go229 but if it is not eligible i would do the schwalbe.

Cheers,

Richard

Goodie goodie!Propeller Think i'm gonna have fun with this one. It looks like it's one of RoG's newer (=better) molds. I already took some time researching the subject, scouring the big www and i never done a german camo like thisSmile

Lets get started right away then...

Box:

Sprues...:

Build options. I am right now leaning towards the "blue 4" RLM 81/ 82 camo...:

Hope you guys like my choice and WIP pics to follow soonBig Smile Cheers,

Kermit,

The Horten brothers were really ahead of thier time when they developed the GO 229. There was a very interesting TV program on the National Geographic channel here in the states. I think it was called Hitler's stealth fighter. Northup Grumman built a full size replica and tested it's radar signature. There is a nice article at nationalgeographicchannel.com

Hey everyone, thanks for all the welcomes!

Kermit, I heve that kit as well its a great kit if a bit fiddly in the cockpit area, I haven't finished mine yet and I've only seen the older Red 13 scheme done so I'm excited to see how it turns out.

Model Geek, I saw that program as well. Very interesting story, IIRC they were able to show that had it become operational it would've been very difficult to intercept because of the combination of speed and reduced radar signature. It would've cut the British response time by more than half!

Aright on to the MiG,

The Sprues

As you can see ive started to remove some of the pieces to clean them up, there is quite a bit of flash. Exterior detail is very good and nicely done. The cockpit leaves something to be desired though.

Markings and decals

There are options for a Chinese plane in 1958 and a Soviet one stationed at Vostok 1950. I'm going for the Soviet plane. The Directions are decidedly vague on what colors to use, but my best guess is the exterior is Light Ghost grey or something very close ill use that and see how it goes.

:Edited: Hopefully the pictures work now.

Hawkeye I don't see any of the pics mate. Once you post the pic link you have to keep the pics in photobucket, otherwise the link has nothing to refer to. If you haven't taken them out might be something else wrong.

I checked my photobucket everything seems to be ok there, I re-posted them to see if that helps. They were working when I originally posted them and they seem to be working now. Is there a bandwidth limit on them?

Hawkeye,

Simply love that mig! Imagine the war going on for one or two more years.... YP80's, schwalbes and mig 9's.... A very interesting thought...

Been working on the flying wing for a bit and have pit and engine works painted and assembled. At least...the engine parts that are visible lol... revell cheated a bit hereBig Smile

Anyways... some pics to clarify... Pit... the ip was a flat piece of plastic so i was forced to use the decal:

Engine intake:

And exhaust area:

And found some time to do the 30mm cannon:

Great little kit sofar... Really interested to see if the lot fits well in the gluing stage.... Thanks for watching boysWink

Hawkeye - Welcome aboard! Love the MiG-9 and looking forward to seeing it built! Yes

Kermit - I don't even get to say "hello" yet and you're ready to paint a 229?! Modeling Maniac!!!  Wink Nice work!

Here's a quick mockup of the P-59. The wings aren't glued to the fuselage yet because they need some clean up. I'm really impressed with the fit of this kit! So far it's gone together better than the Tamiya Fw-190 I just built! Surprise  If this thing takes any filler, it's because I'm an idiot!

The only issue I'm going to have with this kit is the fact that the plastic has a textured surface. That would be fine if it was getting painted OD or something but not good for a NMF. I will have to do some sanding to smooth it out.

Jmabx,

What do you mean "starting"??Confused It just came out of the paintboothClown

Great work you're showing there. It does look like a good fit and nice mold. Looking forward to seeing more buddy!YesSmile

Had a day off today so had time to do the camo spraying and undercarriage assembly. Only got the landing gear bay doors and antennae to slap on and dirty her up a bit before i can start the decalling. Never did a german camo like this before but i am pretty pleased with it sofarSmile I followed revells instructions on mixing the RLM 81/82 paints and i don't have alot of knowledge on the subject but to me it looks ok...:

And the undersides. I really like the yellow nose on these birds, just like 109's reallyBig Smile

Hey guys!

jmabx- that P-59 looks great! I wish this kit went together as well as you say yours has!

kermit- Geez! You might have that one done by the end of the week! Colors look right, exciting to see it in that camo scheme.

Started work on the interior of the MiG. The kit provides very little detail (There's not even a stick!). Kermit was very helpful in sending me some screenshots of the MiG in the IL2 1946 game. Based on those photos I think the interior blue green im using might be a bit much but ill go with it. Im not sure if there is much I can do to to make it a little more detailed. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The seat and floor,

The instrument panel,

Almost every piece had to be sanded down to fit inside the fuselage, the floor was probably the worst. I had to take about a 1/4 inch out of the center to get it closed up. I placed the seat back in the wrong spot on top of the seat itself so I moved it directly to the floor. As you can see my model making is a little crude (The kit doesn't help matters much) I have to have it though to complete the Soviet collection I'm trying to build. I suppose I better get used to build like this if that is my goal!

Richard I agree with the others, the color looks right to me!!! That is a nice lil kit!!!! I know you don't know the answer, and am really not asking. You have to wonder though WHY it has such a BIG nose wheel lol. Looking good mate!!!!Toast

Hawkeye you seem to be doing quite well with your Mig!!! Toast

...You have to wonder though WHY it has such a BIG nose wheel lol...

Been thinking about that and the only reason i could imagine myself is that the nosewheel would have to carry the weight of the whole aircraft on a crappy nose down landing. Or germany had a surplus in tractor wheels at the time.....Big Smile

The mig is coming along great. Really spartan interior but you made out of it what you could. Well done buddy. Give us more more more!Toast

Thanks a lot for the kind words, luckily there won't be much to see once its all buttoned up. I fairly happy with how it looks so far. Next up closing it up and starting the wings and gear.

About the Horten nose wheel, that has always been the main thing I didn't like about the lines of the 229 otherwise its an absolutely beautiful plane. I wish they hand not used that monstrosity! I'm sure they either had really good reasons or like you said surplus tractor wheels!

Kermit - Wow, you made quick work of the GO 229, looks great!!!

Jmabx - The P-59 is coming along nicely. What colors will you be finishing it in?

Hawkeye - Glad to see the Mig started. It's a very interesting subject.

Hope to get back to the Fury this weekend. I was out of town last weekend and am catching up on things at the office and home.

You finished yet Richard?????? seriously though thats a nice paintjob, well doneYes I agree with the the other guys the wheel does give it a kinda off road look....It might be that big to hold the nose up high, looking at it on the ground it appears to be in a glideslope angle....

Ok, here are the pics as promisedSmile. Hope you guys like how she turned out...

Undersides...

And took a moment to get a nice sepia tone in as wellBig Smile

All in all this was a great little kit to build... Cheap, great fitting parts, easy to build and lotsa fun to do a german camo job for the first time. I would certainly recommend this kit to anyone interested in a small scale model of this interesting subject.

Thanks for watching and your comments were as always much appreciated,

Richard

Richard the 229 looks great! Nice to see that late war scheme on one of those beauties, I really like the large shields on the wings, really sets it off! Nice job! Makes em want to pull mine off the holding area and finish it up.

I've gotten pretty far on the MiG here is an update, I hope to have it done tonight or sometime tomorrow but I won't rush it its pretty close though.

Before I closed it up i had to make sure there was enough weight in the nose, every example I've seen built has had to use a prop rod to keep it on the nose wheel. I used tack n' stick adhesive to weigh it down. Unfortunately I don't have anything heavier like fishing weights or shot lead. I had to get creative and use quite a bit to get it right, I'm still not sure if it'll sit correctly though :fingers crossed:

Closed up, had to putty a little bit of a seam in the front.

Wings on.

The underside.

Here it is with coat of Tamiya Bare Metal Silver, I'm not well off and live in a small apartment so unfortunately i don't have a airbrush so i used a rattle can. i coated the canopy with future before masking and painting, it helped but this kit would benefit from a vacuform canopy.

Thanks for looking,

Hawkeye

Kermit -- good heavens, so this is the much-talked-about process of kermification -- started and finishd, to high standard, in the blink of an eye! She's a beauty, I bought this one for a GB last year but never got past the earliest cleanup and pre-paint. I wish I'd gone ahead and done her, but there was, as always, so much else happening (my PhD was in progress at the time -- shudder...) Oh, the big nosewheel was due to the engines being mounted so far forward, it was the main weight bearing contact point. Well, I better get my finger out and make up some badges, I'm caught on the hop! I'll update page 1 with your completed build later today.

Hawkeye -- great work on a fascinating type! The MiG-9 has been so far overlooked that most folks imagine the -15 was their first jet, and that's unfair to a huge body of work that went before. It's not an easy kit, that's for sure, and it's great to see it come together.

Cheers, Mike/TB379

Kermit - Awesome job on the GO 229Bow Down I haven't done a Revell kit for a long time but this will make me reconsider.

Hawkeye - Your NMF turned out really good from the rattle can. Nothing wrong with using the rattle cans. I had a airbrush when I was a teenager but it mysteriously disappeared. When I got back into the hobby I built for several years painting with rattle cans before investing in another airbrush.

I'll be attending our monthly club meeting tomorrow evening. That will motivate me to get back to work on the Fury this weekend.
