Hey CJ, My memory is not all that great, but are you by chance building a 1/20th SAFS suit like these: ?

(old pic- been meaning to get these guys wrapped up any day now...)

If so, could you help me figure out just what all the do-dads are? E.g, the cannon on the arm, the stuff on the back of the green/white one?

I only got 'into' these model kits when I splurged on the Falke, then the Lunadiver stingray (in 1.35th), so I don't know too much about all this...

Keep up the good work, though Captain

Waz up CJ, glad to see you post your WIP, and looking good I might add.  Hope you don't mind if I barrow the PVC pipe idea for a base, great idea.  Joints look great.  As for the LP, a botched paint job with a disastrous attempt @ paint stripping, resulting in a melted LPCrying.

Look forward to more of your build.

Gunpla Master

Hello CJ, hope to see some photos soon my friend.

Yeah, I’m a bit overdue for something. Big Smile

I puttied the arms and legs, using a round toothpick to give the joint covers some wrinkles and such. I left the bottom of the feet off, thinking that instead of solid metal they might have vulcanized rubber soles, kind of like a car tire, which might give better grip on concrete or asphalt. I’ll paint them dark grey, which is easier if they aren’t attached.

I modified the shoulder mounts w/ bits of aluminum tubing, so that I can add them after base painting. Then made a cross bar out of brass tube to insure that they line up correctly. Hopefully it will give the arms additional support now that they are heavier.

Also added some more detail to the upper sensor, or rather replaced details that were a little soft.

Added weld detail around the periscope base. After sanding the hull smooth, I glued the periscope in place. When that was dry, I glued a bit of Evergreen round stock into the seam. When that was solid, I sanded it down, and then cut grooves in the strip crosswise, using a #11 exacto blade. Then I painted it w/ Tamiya liquid solvent, and repeatedly pressed a homemade weld making tool into each cut – the solvent melted the plastic into a putty-like consistency which gave under the pressure, creating little weld-like marks. I then let that dry. It looks okay in person, but not in the photo. Have to wait to get paint on it before the final verdict is in.

Next time, I’ll use half-round stock, to make it easier.

I need to work on the base before I make the hands or attach the arms, because I want the right hand to be resting on or pushing aside some rubble - so I started on that.

Went to Home Depot and found a 4” diameter PVC pipe connector – making sure it was well molded w/ no major defects. Sanded the ID numbers off the ends and then dropped a circle cut piece of 1mm styrene sheet into the hole. I wanted it a little recessed so that it would form a bowl to hold the base material. It’s not quite level, but that doesn’t matter – once the base filler goes in, it will never be seen again.

Then I made a pair of boxes from styrene sheet. These were filled w/ plaster to make a concrete looking floor and wall section.  They didn’t come out perfect, but that’s okay – they’re going to get very beat up in the next few steps - I’m going to bust them up to have a section of flooring w/ a partial wall, and lots of rubble.

It’s going slowly, but I’m pleased w/ my progress so far. I'm glad for this GB.

Had time today to work on another project I am building besides the SF, the Nitto AFS Mk1.  Most of the assembly is done with the exception of a few parts and ready for texturing.

One of my personal favorite M.aK designs. A nice mix of mechanical shapes combined with the human form.  Cool

Not a fan of the pilot though. Mine looked a bit like Elliot Gould when he's surprised...

Looking good, GM. What happened w/ the Luna Pawn?

Here's mine.  It took a while to get it posted.  There's been a lot of things going on lately, dead T.V. dead car, sick computer, not remembering how to download from my camera into photobucket to name a few.

It was a quick build but fun.

Maybe I'll start another one.

Nice! Quick too. I like the strapping on the side cable, gives it a field-modded appearance. Good work!

I have had to return to the drawing board on the Kreb. Lower hull and legs are not working out. Alas though, I have a Mel on the way to keep me occupied.

Here is where I am @ on the Scout Flier.  Bass Pro Shop provided the much needed bulbous radar unit and following along by looking @ a photo of a Rainbow Egg resin cast, the only kit available of this subject, I was able to ID the exhaust pipe on the bottom, so I am trying to add what I can in the design as was done from the original, al be it, I have also done my own interpretation too!!!!

Also included is the start of a Nitto SF3D AFS Mk1.  This will take the place of the FUBAR'd Luna Pawn!!!!!!!!!

You also can see I have started working on the head of the SF.

Vacation over, returned home today after a Fishing Trip to the coast of NC for those little monsters called Blues.  Caught sooo many, got sick of catching them and just watched, now that is a fishing trip!!!!!!

Hello CJ, hope to see some photos soon my friend.

iafrate, wow is all I can say, Fliege turned out just awsome.

SLW45, as always, glad to hear from you my ole friend.

Picked up some need parts for the SF from modelbuilder and Bass Pro Shop.  Hope to post more progress photos soon.  When I got home today, a package was waiting for me on  my desk from Starship Modeler and I got the G-Pawn I ordered, the land based version of the Luna Pawn.

Took parts from the Luna Pawn, some extras from the G-Pawn and w/the AFS Mk1 I sacrificed for the SF, I know have enough parts to build the AFS1, which I will start on this week.  Many great projects going here on this GB and I am pleased everyone is having fun, after all, that is what it is about.

It's complete! Been a long hard road with many bumps, but its done in time for the show today. The LED light didnt work out just how i wanted it though. It's very dim, i think this is due to the plastic piece that holds the LED in the engine thruster. Speaking of the thruster, those were completely scratchbuilt. The LED light along with the leads go through the center of the engine piece. The second thing that i didnt like was one of the custom decals didnt set right, It did something i've never seen before. It seemed to set only on the edges which leave an a pocket in the middle of the decal. All the decals got the same treatement and that is the only one that didnt set right. I think the adhesive didnt release right or something. Overall, it came out nicely with a little bit of hiccups.

GM: I’m digging that flyer so far. I like the step-by-step, as it shows how easy this stuff is to do. More please. Also, good to see the AFS almost done. The cactus on the base really does help.

Ponch: That’s quality work. The chipping is especially convincing, and the lenses in the binocular/sighting device catch the light nicely.

Iafrate: Lots of good mods there. I’ve built the Fliege, and I know it’s not the easiest kit to assemble. Nice work. Best of luck getting it to the show on time. If not, there’s always next year. Smile

Got some small but significant progress done on mine, but still haven’t figured out how I want to do the “wrist” joints. Pix to follow.

Out freaking standing iafrate.  I had wondered when you would post again and boy did you knock it out of the ball park.  The mods are just great, do wish you could have posted a photo of those engine bells lit up.  Looks to me you have many skills to share and I hope you get done in time for the show.  Would love to have the WIP on that hand, these types mods make a model sing, and yours is singing load and clear my friend.  Oh what is it singing;  Shinning Star!

Here it is built. Been a VERY long road and here it is before primer and paint. Hopefully things will tunr for the better and let this thing finish out smoothly. Anyways some of the mods/changes. To start the aluminum engine bells also are wired with red LEDs in them. So i wired it to a switch at the base that will turn the engines on/off. Next i added some brass tube in for the sight and gun and wraped the cannon with wire. On to the right arm where i added some kind of rocket launcher. Then there is the hand that i swaped for a gundam hand, but did some modding on top of the hand with styrene and brass wire. The rest is sanding, scribing and aves. This model has posed many first for me in modeling. So its been rough going, but i have learned a lot from this endeavor. So on to primer, paint, decals, weathering, clear coat, and fixing to base. Its Monday night and the show is Saturday we will see if things will go without a hitch.

Another Ma.K completed on the Ma.K GB.   Way to go ponch, your idea of the suit standing watch w/a crate full of Panzerfaust is just great.  Really like the results.

Thanks Smile

Well, I'm as done with this as I'll ever get.  I put all the pieces together, attacked the suit with yet another coat of powedered pastels to simulate grime (you can never have too much grime on MaK Stick out tongue) and shot some pictures

I opened a thread in the Sci-Fi forum with more pics --> /forums/t/132109.aspx

ponch

Pretty much done with weathering, still need to add the hip armor plates, power cables, arms and canopy, but you can see now how things are going to look when everything is said and done.

The base is almost complete as well, still needs a bit more vegetation.
