The Ostfront (eastern front) GB 2010/11

Bloody hell, that makes a change. Who did you order from.

Hannants. Total order including shipping was something like $19. 

And...the decal sheet has now disappeared from Squadron, but it was something like $25 over there.

I thought it might be. I use Hannants all the time. There a some sites over here that can be a bit cheaper, but i like the selection on hannants and they have a lot of stuff other don't. I usually do large orders from them covering everything i need.

Some of you may have already seen this site but I thought I would share this one with you all. There are some interesting pictures there and these fit in with this group build perfectly.

My own listed build has been changed to an Eduard Polikarpov I-16 type 17 that i am expecting on my doorstep tomorrow. Will be my first attempt at working with PE....

kermit, i would like to join with a DML1/35 th panther d . its the kursk version done in either streight yellow or yellow w/ faint brown camo. im gonna try and push it through for the show on 9-11 in kalamazoo MI. its a partial, but well below the 33% limit. the upper hull has some work done and the roadwheels have black sprayed on.  thanks and pics to follow soon

Oh crap... ditch the rules if you will have trouble finishing before your show. I'm willing to close an eye. Would be a nice teaser too LOL.

Received my eduard I-16 last tuesday and BOY does it look sweet! PE parts, options for no less than 5 different planes, canopy and wheel masks, colored IP.... I am pretty eager to start myself LOL

What do you guys think? Should i move the start date closer?

There are no dumb questions, just sometimes you can get a dumb answer and i do hope mine will not be:

Basically everybody involved will let the host (in this case, yours truly) know what they want to build. I will then add your name and your intended kit to the very first post of this ongoing thread.

Whenever you have news/ WIP pictures or questions you just reply to the thread and post whatever you want to. So yes, it is an ongoing thread where everybody builds the same topic. One post will show WIP pictures of participant A and the very next post could very well be the WIP pictures of participant B.

Maybe sounds like a messy business but believe me, it isn't Just have a look around in the other GB's and you will see what i mean.

Like I said on my original post I want to be drafted in - it's my first GB and I'm looking forward to it!

I would like you to 'bend' the rules for me slightly. I have two kits in my stash at present - one a Dragon 1/35 Panzer I Ausf A with interior which I'd got MK tracks for and a 1/48 Tamiya Tiger I (early).

I'm going to send the MK tracks for the Panzer back as they are terrible - In fact I'm posting them back on the way to work. This little Panzer I build was going to keep me going until the beginning of October so I'll be shelving that and starting the Tiger this weekend. I'm going for a dio (my first) as I have a 1/48 German Field Maintenance crew which I'm going to have set up all over her getting her spick and span.

I've got 1/48 Tiger early Friuls and an AM 1/48 Tiger barrel on order. It won't be a quick build, this could be my best yet. This kit was the very first kit that I built when I started Armour Modelling last year and it was pretty crappy then and the L & L tracks were a PITA too - that's why I've got Friuls!

I think you should bring the start date forward to now and maybe extend the GB for one month so everyone gets a fair shot incase they have planned to start a build for this GB at the beginning of October? What do you reckon?

Anyway: to sum up, I'll be entering a Tamiya 1/48 early Tiger I with Friuls and AM barrel on a base (possible dio scene). The markings will put her in the PzReg 2, Russia, Summer 1943. She will be tank number S33.

And due to developments and request i have given the early start some thought and am willing to go ahead with it. Bottom line is that the group build has now officially started I also added a message on the front page stating that people still working on their builds at the end dat will be given the time to finish up.

Well,.... i guess that leaves me to let everyone know i am very glad that so many of you have expressed enthousiasm for my group and hope that everyone will have a blast the coming year. Have fun guys

Oh, and I went ahead and ordered the second La-5 and the Vector cockpit yesterday. Winter distemper, here I come!

I will be keeping a close on as the build goes on. I doubt i will be able to start mine until late june/july next year, but some really good builds to watch in the meantime.

Lets get things rolling! I've got everything all sorted and ready to go! This is my basic build - the Tamiya 1/48 early Tiger I - ironically I built this kit as my very first ever model when I started out in May last year!

It was a rubbish build but being my first and knowing NOTHING about models, only REAL tanks, I can be excused! Obviously now my skills are massively improved and I've learnt no end of stuff-my models are now in a totally different league. This has the potential to be a great build - it's a good kit that is well detailed & easily assembled too............

Righto: I'm planning on having the Tiger parked up with all ports and hatches open. The first Maintenance Man is in a bent over position (oo-er) reaching out to grab the 88mm Tiger shell that his buddy is passing up to him from the ground. The third Maintenance Man has opened a shell crate and is in the process of getting the second 88mm shell out to pass on. There is also a guy who can be posed with a paintbrush - I might have him posed touching up some markings or something. I'm going to have a lot of stowage scattered about on the base too.

Shown below is the very tank that I am building, this is the picture on the side of the box - same markings, colour scheme, everything............................

Now then, I was hoping to get a 1/48 turned aluminium barrel to relace the Tamiya offering which has a seam down the middle which no matter how hard you try the seam can't really be totally removed but I couldn't find an early version that was suitable SO I ordered a section of Verlinden Netting to wrap around the barrel to hide the seam. Also in this bag shown below (apart from the netting) is the Resin Stowage...............

I've since found that a suitable 1/48 barrel can be obtained from Cove models in the UK so I'm going to ring them on Monday and hope that they have stock in which case I'll keep the netting for my upcoming Tasca Sherman Firefly Birthday build.

I didn't get a chance to get started properly today other than download some photos and other reference material. I'm working from home tomorrow (as in covering the emergency work phone should any customers have problems etc) so I'm hoping to get the basics assembled in prearation for paintwork. As usual the Friuls and running gear will go on last. The build itself will be fairly quick but it's the base and diorama/figures that I'll really be concentrating on.

Let the GB commence - I can't wait to get going!

Check out this bit of rationalization! The 8th AAF GB doesn't kick off til November, and I just can't bring myself to build the Hellcat for the Alleycat GB since that'd be FOUR navy birds back-to-back. So the Lavochkin's getting the go as the next plane in line.

Took down the box last night and washed the sprues. This should be interesting...the kit looks all kinds of ridiculous!

Why do you say ridiculous? Granted, zvezda kits are not always known for tamigawa fit and the office looks a bit spartan... Kinda like the bulkheads though even though you probably wont see any of it once finished... Is that engine in one piece?? Holding my breath on that one

Ah well,.... as long as you are having fun with it, nothing else really matters IMHO

I guess for me it all comes down to exterior fit and finish, and the more stuff you cram inside the fuselage, the more challenging it becomes to ensure that exterior fit. I've read about some fit nightmares with this kit, and they basically boil down to the internal structure causing problems when mounting the fuselage to the wings. But people seem to have good luck just installing the internal structure into the fuselage in the first place, so I think I'll try that.

I'm also REALLY curious how the Vector resin cockpit's going to work within the confines of this kit. Think I'll hold that for the whitewashed "58" La-5.

As for the engine...it gets built on the previous page. And it's WAY more than one piece...

It's got potential - it just depends on how accurate my 1/48 stowage & figure painting abilities are!

One question which someone can erhaps answer me is this................

As you can see I've got a cracking Verlinden German 'Grey' Stowage resin set. Having not used 'Resin' items like these before Is there anything that I need to do with them before painting them or will they paint up as normal?

I've been wanting to build some Soviet aircraft, so this is a good excuse. I just got a 1/72 Hobbyboss Mig-3 so sign me up with that, I've got some others I may add once the Mig is done.

Here're the Zvezda La-5 sprues. Overall detail is solid, but it's really tough to gauge on a plane like the La-5 where so much of it was built out of wood laminate. The areas that do sport detail, such as the gun access doors, sport very detailed, finely recessed lines and rivets. The many-pieced engine looks a bit on the plain side, and if I were doing this build with the engine exposed I'd seriously consider trying to run down a resin M-82 to replace the kit parts. That said, the engine can't be seen with everything closed up, so who cares?

I think my initial plan of attack is going to be to get the major interior pieces separated, see what needs to go where, what needs priming, etc, and proceed accordingly.
