Weathering GB - 2/1/2011 - 1/31/2012

put all the final bits on, and decided I kinda screwed the pooch by putting some color on it so early. Oh well, learning experience. Any way, she'll now get hull red, salt color, and then camo. Tracks are another subject, my 1st time doing indy's from Dragon, and they're sitting in the box "pointing at me and laughing"....

A WEATHERING GB!!!   Why the !#$%&  didn't I think of that!  So simple, so poetic.  Not sure how I feel about having one of those "wingy" things in my badge line though...

I found out about this one through the FSM email update...I'm going to kick the idea around a bit and check the stash for some unique weathering opprtunities. 

...this has got to be the modeling gods telling me to get an AFV back on the workbench.

Ok, a bit of news and a picture. I salvaged the Stuka without as much effort as I thought I would have to put out. Instead of stripping the white wash off the model all together and repainting, I discovered that after the white had cured a bit for about 24-48 hours, I could chip the paint off by applying some paint thinner and work it with a stiff brush. Looks a lot better with a distressed white coat. I'll carry on with it.

As for the picture, I've begun working on the forest base for the downed Fw 190. I took it early this morning so lighting is aweful, as it normally is for my ridiculous WIP photos....Tonight I'll apply vegetation and some replicated water that the 190 will be sitting in.

Well,... My sub has paint on it and a coat of future afterwards. Getting closer to the "rustbucket stage"....

I tried to get some shading going by coloring in the panellines with the base paint plus some drops of white added... It's subtle and my siphon fed airbrush (revell vario, which is actually mostly a license produced Badger vega 2000)  went to it's limits to do this kind of fine spraying but i like how it turned out myself... Next up is some washes and drybrushes to make the detail "pop" more.

Kermit, awesome lookin' sub! I've never done one before but I'd always like to weather a 1/72 U-boat...

I'm calling the Fw 190 done and it is now on the base. Well, for all intents and purposes its done though I have a few minor things I need to tweak, like the moss on the wings and such. Any how, here it is...

I feel like I rushed it a bit and didn't exactly produce a nice base....Every model is a learning experience and I always try to come away with a different attitude after each build. This, and the Stuka, certainly taught me not to rush, be complacent or eliminate certain techniques because of laziness....it shows in the work. As much fun as this GB was, I don't think I put out a good enough effort which is probably why I haven't posted a pic of the Stuka yet.....

Therefore, I'm going enter one more entry for the sake of my own redemption. I'll be weathering an old 1.48 ARII Hellcat.

And here is the Stuka....lots of things went wrong here...I attempted a winter wash for the first time and I tried to do it without an airbrush...I didn't like the way it looked at all so I thought I'd have to strip it. In the process of stripping, I liked the way the Testor's paint thinner was pulling the paint off so that is what I did and thankfully it saved me some work. I coated the bottom with Future, one coat before decals and one after. When I went to apply a wash using artist oils thinned with, well, Testor's thinner, it devoured the Future and gave it a some what chipped appearance...Ordinarily, this would look great if applied to a tank or old car but on a Stuka? Not so much. So I'll have to be more careful next time...

It actually looks very much like the warbirds abandoned in the weeks and months before the end of the war ...

The ground crews no longer had parts and fuel to fix, repair and/or replace the necessary items to keep 'em flying ... keeping the paint looking good was probably the lowest item on the priority list ...

Jon, I'm simply blown away man! The dio just looks too real - that is some serious weathering, some of best I've ever seen. Happy to see that Stuka too, especially after the anxious moments with the white wash. Looks freakin' amazing!

Hey Doogs, I'm gonna have to take off the last two entries I have.  Why? Despite having projects out the wazoo with limited time I came across a 1/48 Revell F/A-18E yesterday at the LHS and decided to scoop it up as it was only $17 and I've been wanting to do a jet for awhile.

Soooooo I think I'm gonna enter the jet for this build along with the B-25 already listed and keep it at just those 2 planes

*EDIT:  I now notice that there aren't any jets on the roster so perhaps it will be a nice change of pace from the props and tanks

Rudratt that WWI bird  is just a showstopper. Richard great progress on the sub. Jon the 190 is looking just like the Youtube video, brilliant. The Stuka is just a killer great work there.

Can i change mine to the Tamiya 1:48 F-117. I started it the other night and its almost put itself together lol. Still not sure if im gonna go blue black with chalky weathering or pre-production camouflage with light wear and tear.

Hey Scorp I got my F-117 today. I've also ordered the CMK upgrade kit that has full resin and PE cockpit and wheel well extras. Should be a fun build!

Its one of the easiest builds ever. Only hard part that i could see was the bomb bay which i excluded. The decals dont seem to respond too well to micro sol though.

I am calling my sub done! Had one major FUBAR moment with it a few hours ago when i secured a rigging line with tamyia tape, ripping off part of a decal... What was i thinking!!

Anyways, other than that it turned out to be a nice rustbucket:

After heavy drybrushing and washes i got the idea to use a very thin green wash on the lower hull as to simulate algea and such:

Ooooooh goodie! Got this one in my stash and it is absolutely stunning! Having serious issues picking builds going forward - got too many kits I want to build.

Also - when you get a chance, would you mind grabbing a pic of the u-boat that shows off the whole thing from the exposed side? Need to get it up on the front page.

Alright...updated the front page I think...if I missed anything, let me know and I'll fix it right quick. 

And I am positively itching to get back into this GB. The Achilles is pretty well along, and on a brief hiatus while I wait for the LHS to get my friuls in stock, and I'm getting a sense that the Pup's going to be something of a long-term build.

So I might be firing something else up here in the near future...

With a rainny 3 days in the Carolina's I got a chance to work on my Thunderbolt. I have'nt posted in a while but I have been following  along. Some fine work being done here. The thunderbolt is finished, but lets start with the pre-shading.

I never preshaded before so I'm not sure of the results.

Changed! Good call keeping the Jug! I may need to kick one off soon myself - got a serious case of Jug fever going on...my stash is now up to a 1/32 Hasegawa bubbletop, a 1/48 Monogram Razorback, two 1/48 Tamiya Razorbacks, and a 1/48 Tamiya -M.

And I took my Christmas gift of a Wingscale B-25 pre-order and plowed it into a Trumpy Razorback, Master blast tubes and a set of Zotz decals. Planning to build Raid Hot Mama...I won't have the room for the beast until we move next year, but I don't think I can wait that long!

Julez, definitely looking forward to seeing that Butcher Bird on page one!

Heh! The only cure is to build your way out! 

The 1/32 Jugs are calling to me, but I literally have no where to display them (my display cabinet is only 11" deep...a Mossie or 1/32 109 are about the limit...so I could show a 1/32 Jug if I cut it in half!).

Maybe I could get by with a 1/48. Do the -M for the 8th AAF, or Magic Carpet depending on when NMF3 kicks off:

Only nasty thing sofar is the molded on seatbelts... But then again its the only thing that's wrong with this kit from where i am sitting. Can't believe they can make this for EUR.24,95! Absolutely great detail all around the plane.

Oh and Doogs, I did catch your request on the uboat picture but the weather has been really grey and gloomy today and i need some good natural light for it. Please  bear with me ok?

Here she is completed with some weathering. I could'nt find any good weathered photos in my research, so I just winged it.

This was a fun build. Again not sure if its weathered enough or not enough. I am happy with the way it came out. I hope you guys like it.

Looking forward to the next build a Eduard 1/48 FW 190D-9. This kit has some really small PE stuff. And no pilot ?  Also converting paint from Mr. color to Tamiya or MM thats another ?

Robert, your Warthog looks fantastic! For 'winging' the weathering it looks great to me. I love that you loaded it to the teeth with ordnance. What is that bomb on the inboard most hard point on the starboard wing? Cluster bomb?
