Weathering GB - 2/1/2011 - 1/31/2012

Yeah its seems it was made back in '92 so that could explain it. Its a gorgeous plane and i will do my best to make it nice but man if it does not fight me at every turn..lol

All the more satisfaction when its done. We going to get to see any pics when its done.

Yeah i will post pics, then run screaming as all the plane people come and pick out all i did wrong...LOL (i know they wont but it scares me that I'm going into a area i truly know jack about..lol)

DoogsATX: I'd like to reup for this build... just not as ambitious. I'll start with Tamiya F4F-4 built as "White 2" VMF 223 september '42.

Tiger - as I understand it, the older 1/32 Hasegawa 109s are pretty rough. Rumor has it some of their newer ones (I think the late-model Gs, etc) are extremely well-executed. 

The Eduard E-7 is kind of all over the place so far. Some parts are extraordinarily well-executed. Others not as much. There's a frustrating degree of flash on the fuselage, for example. And the locator pins are microscopic and I'm not convinced they're actually aligned correctly. Test-fitting seems to be going well, though, and it looks like all the pieces will fit together without major steps or gaps. I'll just need to tape carefully and work in sections.

Speaking of 109s - anybody know anything about the new Cyber-Hobby 109E-4? http://www.dragonmodelsusa.com/dmlusa/prodd.asp?pid=CHC3204

I definitely already prefer the way they handle the wing-mounted cannons, but I'm curious as to the benefits of the slide-molded fuselage. Isn't slide molding usually used for things like tank barrels, to mold them as a single piece? Would that indicate then that the fuselage is a singe piece? Because that would be amazing.

Doogs i poured over that link and i cannot for the life of me figure out if thats a one piece or now, or if it just means ultra detail on the panel lines etc

On a side note I signed up over at Armorama and was poking through some of the models and now truly feel like crap as the level of detail on some of them was so high it made me feel awful for even trying to make a model.

Now i know i have been out of the game as it were for some time but man makes me almost not want to touch what i have and bow out before I embarrass myself.

Oh and its happened here as well, everyone does such amazing work, and it should inspire me to do better but at times it makes me feel terrible for wasting everyones time with my paltry offerings =(

Well im off to stare at more models, then really rethink if i should get back into this 100%

I haven't heard anything on that 109 either Doogs, but would love to see some reviews. I had been intending to get the Eduard 109E, but this dragon kit may change my mind. Price isn't to bad, after their 110 kits i was expecting alot higher than it is. But from what i have seen its not much more than Eduard.

Slide modling is being used alot in their armour kits. I have got a few with it, but i am not sure if its the whole kit or certain parts. Those pics from the back of the box do give the impression its one piece, but i can't see it.

Found this build log. No pics of the fuselage as yet, but not sure how you would get that cockpit in a one piece fuselage, not with those wing spars.

Ah. Found a link on their FB page. It's your typical two-piece fuselage. But dang it looks like a nice kit! Cockpit detail is rather superior to the Eduard E-7...

With the work you're doing on that Willys, I really wouldn't stress about it! 

My take, though. If you stress about it and try to "compete" with others on this site or Armorama or wherever, well, that strips the fun out of the hobby. I'm pretty much in awe whenever, for example, I watch ferms do his thing with some POS kit that I'd have chunked into the trash. If I spent every build trying to live up to that, yeah, now way.

I'm doing this because I find it therapeutic. It feeds my need for some time to myself, to work with my hands, and to concentrate without having to focus, if that makes sense. I'm finding these days I get some of my best thinking done at the bench, and to me the mental and emotional benefits are totally worth it in and of themselves.

In terms of quality...all I do is strive to make my next model better than my last. That's a tall order sometimes, but it's fun seeing where I'm at now that I've come back to the hobby, compared to where I was when I was building models as a kid/teenager...

Doogs your right, its not really a competition i guess i just get overwhelmed sometimes with all the amazing work done. Sometimes the fact that these folks have been modeling for years and have been refining their technique eludes my brain.

I think honestly my weakest areas are scratch building and really small parts..lol

I will agree the act of building does bring a sense of calm to my usually over active mind.

Ok crisis averted, I am gonna get back to building and calm my mind =)

Would a more modern toolbox look totally out of place on my jeep?

AND anyone know how long i need to make the antenna on my panzer?

Tiger I can only echo what Doogs said. I know i said when i see kits like Doogs P-47 it makes me feel like giving up. But thats not really true. Its a pleasure to see a model of that quality. But i know that while mine may not be up to that standard, they are the best that i am able to do at the moment. I strive to make each better than the last one. But the important things are 1) i enjoy the build and 2) i am happy with the finished results. If other people like it, thats just a bonus.

When you see an amazing model, instead of thinking "I could never do that!!" think "I want to figure out how to do that!" and then figure it out. That's the way I go about.  The only way to get better is to do it!!

The Cyber Hobby looks really nice. Apparently my LHS is going to have them in stock next week. And that 20% off coupon is burning a hole in my wallet...and it'd be nice to have a BoB-era E-4 next to a sandblasted E-7...

Honestly I'm a bit disappointed with the interior detail on the Eduard E-7. I've heard the same complaint about their Hellcats, so I'm wondering if maybe that's an area they're still ramping up on?

OWL That is the way i i do my models. I have been building models for about 25 years, and the last 3 have seen my modelling improve leaps and bouds by seeing what others are doing, finding out how its done and working out how to do that in a way that suits me. Doogs oil wash for aircraft being a prime example. thats something i will try on my B-17.

Doogs If you could, would you let us know if it appears in your LHS. After waiting 2 years for a couple of Dragon armour kits i have given up waiting for their new releases.

jbrady - welcome back to the GB! I've got the same Wildcat in the stash...heard nothing but overwhelmingly positive things about it. Building a Cactus Air Force aircraft will present all kinds of weathering possibilities, too (not to mention the easiest decal job of all time...). Looking forward to it!

Which is exactly why I started this GB! Read about lots of awesome techniques, but seeing them put into practice here could help a lot of us hone our skills or develop new ones.

If I get prickly about one thing, it'll be getting everyone to explain what they're doing weathering-wise.

Well some nice builds going one. I was going to wait another month or so until I'd wrapped up my builds for swing wing and night fighter builds but since we have a house guest I cant do any air brushing (and all my current builds at at a stage that needs it). I figure I might as well start on this one as I want to do a bit of battle damage that can be done pre paint.

Ok so many many many colorful words and 3 broken parts later, i have added the vacuum lines for the wipers. Also noted is the toolbox added to the rear. Lines were made with florist wire.

I need a smoke...

An AMT 1934 Ford pickup truck ... first vehicle i ever owned ... bought it for $25 when i was 13 - where I grew up, one could drive as soon as you could reach the pedals ... most kids learned on a tractor, but the '34 was my 'teacher' ... kept it for 3 years and sold it for $100 ... thought long and hard about going into the car business ... what the hey - a 400% return on my investment ?? ... nonetheless, I took up flying instead and made that my life's work :-) ...

I hear ya pepper, I have had a couple of gems in my auto model days, once that made baby jeebus cry.

 Oh btw n that rust thing on my exhaust, reason i didnt give ratios is that i never have the same...lol I just mix it by eye and go from there. Really and medium red/brown and mauveish red will work. less red more brown possibly a 70:30 split? Hard to say as i only mix what i need when i need it.

You betcha !! ... I mix 'detail' paint the same way ... however, when I'm doing the 'overall' painting (and I use acrylics 98% of the time), I find a mix of 80% paint and 20% distilled water plus an eyedropper full of 'gloss' works peachy for me ... that way, I can decal as soon as the paint dries and the mix works quite well through my airbrush ...

You're wasting no one's time ... we all started somewhere - we all get better with each build ... you will too ...

My real hang up is painting canopies ... I see some that are absolute jewels and shake my head in amazement ... I keep pluggin' away at it, hoping one day to get one canopy to look like those I see in the Group Builds and magazines ...

Hang in there, m'friend and ENJOY the hobby ... remember, it's a hobby and not your life's calling ...
