Also, to make this official so everyone can stop asking - YOU ARE FREE TO START YOUR BUILDS AND POST WIP PICS. I'm going to keep Feb. 1 as the official start date since, but there's nothing wrong with a little preseason fun! 

I should finally have some E-7 cockpit pics to post after tonight, too!

Sorry to ask again Doogs, but does this mean we can show weathering WIP or you still want that to wait for Feb 1 even though we can show build WIP?

hutch - It's funny, I started painting the cockpit and other bits of the E-7 with RLM 02 the other night, and thought "this doesn't look right at all". Guess I'm so used to seeing the darker grey of the later war aircraft. The G-10 is looking good so far, but I have you down for a G-6 on the roster page. Do I need to correct?

 

Doogs, it is a G-6 vice a 10...typo!!!!

RLM 02 was used in cockpits in the early stages of the war. After that it was mostly used on wheel bays and other areas not seen when in flight. Cockpits were mostly RLM 66.

RLM stands for Reichsluftfahrt Ministerium, or State Ministry for Aviation. they desiganted what colours would be used, how markings would be applied, what aircraft were needed, whcih designes to operate and so on. As far as the colours go, its as Doogs descrided it.

I've seen a couple of builds of Bf-109's that use RLM66 or german grey inside the cockpit. I think the later aircraft such as the ME262 and later 109's may have used this instead of RLM02. I think of RLM02 as being slightly a green-grey myself

Can you first explain the RLM thing, i have no idea what it is..lol

Basically, RLM is the German equivalent of FS numbers (or the ANA codes that preceded FS). RLM 02 is a shade of gray that was used in German aircraft much the way interior green was used in US planes. It actually strikes me as more of a brown-gray, but whatever.

Hey Doogs, no I'm not a fan of the rattlecans. I find they too easily give that orange peel effect on the surface. I've just been airbrushing Tamiya XF-16 Flat Aluminium thinned about 20% and this seems to work very nicely.

I'm not either...but I was so impressed with the finish, even with my shoddy spraying, that I'm going to try decanting it and spraying it through the Iwata. The finish is literally so tough that I scraped a fingernail across it with a good degree of force and didn't leave a mark.

Second, looking forward to the 109E build. I have one here I started on for a buddy but i'll tell you me + anything with wings usually ends in a mess..lol There are just soooo many seams (i have the hasagawa kit and the fitment is abysmal to say the least) plus i literally no almost nothing about planes..lol

Anywho keep up the good work on the Messy I am sure it will turn out awesome =D

Damn. I have got a book from the Osprey masterclass on modelling German fighters. It lists all the colours for various items around cockpits. But it is back in camp and i won't be back there till next Wed. If you haven't done the pit by then, i will see what it says.

Doogs I'm also sure with some sliver drybrushing and a dirty wash your pit will look outstanding. It's whetting my appetite to start my Eduard Bf-109 but I have a Zero to finish and then do a MIrage 2000C for the NMF II GB.

yeah the Eduard instructions basically just say "paint everything RLM 02", which I didn't think could be right.

Picked up a 109E reference book at the LHS today...already got ideas. The big wheel thing (technical term) seems like it was actually painted black. The oxygen tank housing was metallic. Several little bits to add here and there to liven things up.

A bit more progress on the 109's pit last night...

I'm reaching a point where I think I need to pick up a Detail and Scale or something...the Eduard pit is both really well detailed and really spartan at the same time, so I need some ideas for adding detail.

Also, not for the GB but weathering-related, I've been adding successive raw umber filters to the P-47 I'm building for the 8th AAF GB:

Casper - the Zero's looking very nice! I'm curious, have you tried Tamiya's AS-12 bare-metal silver? It's rattlecan only (speaking of which...what's up with Tamiya offering so many rattlecan-only colors lately?), but it looks great and as far as I can tell it goes on super-tough.

I'm planning on using it as a primer for the 109 so I can sand and chip through the paint. Decanted, of course, since I'm pretty terrible when it comes to wielding rattlecans with anything like proficiency...

Indy links!? You are a brave man, Doogs. Those things scare me more than the 50-odd 1/32 turnbuckles I need to scratchbuild for my bipes!

It's funny...I built a few tanks as a kid. All Tamiya with the rubber bands. Then I got it in my head that I wanted to build an M113 or something of the sort. Got a kit that wasn't a Tamiya, and it came with all these individual tread links. I gave it three days, but it turned me off indy links from then on.

These days, though, friuls exist! Looking forward to trying my first set...maybe with the BT-7 I got for my birthday.

Ok so small update, glued the seats in painted the "box" added some weathering and added the rear tire.  Still tons more to do but it's coming along =D Sorry for the dust on the bottom of the wheels, i placed on the CD tower and there was unseen dust waiting to pounce...lol

Ok, after sealing up the Zero and Millputing and such I gave her a base coat of Tamiya Flat Aluminium. My plan is to heavily chip and flake the upper paint work. The photos I've seen seem to suggest the insignia, especially the Sun were well maintained on these birds even though the paint fell off everywhere else.

On the drop tank and the wheel flaps I also used Aluminum base coat and will probably finely sand away some of the upper paint to get back to the metal finish. So far this is the easiest kit I have ever built and my hat goes off to Tamiya.

Aww thanks people, I am humbled by all your praise of possibly the smallest vehicle i have ever built...lol. I am really happy it's coming out as nice as it is and yet there is so much more to do and it has had its harrowing experiences and lost parts..lol

ruddratt - I don't do armor, exactly. The Sherman's actually my first armor kit of any kind in something like 17 years. But it's a fantastic diversion! Figured it'd be something relatively easy to tackle before I move on to some of the other armor in my stash and things like indy links...

So, Doogs does armor too!? Stunning work on the Sherman, and the Emil is off to a fine start too. I'll be watching that one closely.

Dave, that jeep is mindblowing! Looks like I could just hop right in and drive 'er away.

Hutch, very nice work on the 'pit. The 109 offices are amongst my favorites to model - there's a whole lot going on in a very small space, and the subtle differences between variants really keeps us on our toes. Keep up the great work!

Made steady progress this past weekend on the 'pit for the (it's called a Pfalz, doogs  ). Should have some pics up within the next few days.

In the mean time, keep those great WIP pics a comin'!

Ok so semi large update:

I decided that i wanted a box under the rear seat, no seeing that the rear seat was on the floor, this meant i had to modify the seat and make a box (or the appearance of one. I took a time card for a MMO i play and used it as my styrene :D i made a simple 2 piece L and then cut the rear seat, lowered the back part and attached it to the top, the front section slides into 2 grooves on either side of the rear section, its a bit crooked in the pics as its not "in" yet.

I also tackled the wheels,  added the rad/lights and added the batt,air filter etc to the engine. Still tons more to do and yes the whole thing will get a shot of dullcoat as soon as im done handling it..lol

I got a bit more done on the Jeep, ill have pics up soon. Just been kinda lazy today for some reason..lol

Well, the kids were restless last night so I only got about half as much done as I'd hoped. But the cockpit is coming along, and the hardest bits of PE (the harnesses) are out of the way. 

And since I promised pics...definitely still very much WIP...

Doogs Panzerkampfwagen basically translates as Armoured Fighting Vehicle. The word panzer, though usually translated as Tank, actually translates as mailed, as is mail armour, and so is translated as Armoured.
