Pvt Mutt -- artistry in metal! My hat is perrmanently doffed, sir, to a modeller who can make PE look like that! Did any PE come with the kit (IIRC Trumpeter had started adding frets about the time that one came out) or is it all AM???

Cheers, Mike/TB379

Nice paint job on the Sturmtiger!  Looks great!

Nice job so far TB.  I like how you broke up the paint with some fading.  Looking sweet!

That sucks that your kit won't be in for a while Jeff.  It is a menacing looking piece of armor.

Wow...nice job on the camo!!!   Thats a very convincing sturmtiger.

I'm bummed, just spoke to squadron....my Dana wont be in the  states till mid February. I guess the row boat hit poor weather.

I have been working on the indy line T80 tracks from AVF Club for the M40.  Everything is going OK for my first go at indy link tracks.  I found a groove so I hope to get them finished in the next couple days and I will post a few pics for inspection.  4 parts per link is a little complicated.  But I think I am doing OK.

Today's progress, the airbrushing should be just about done. I sprayed the tires NATO Black, then used a circle template to redo the hubs in Olive Drab. On the same mixing I picked up some thin spots on the main hull, then paled the remaining paint with a few drops of white and spotted on some fade patches. The tracks were sprayed into a dark brown in the same round of work.

The fade effect isn't very subtle at the moment, hopefully the oil wash weathering and rust streaks will pull it all together.

lol, there is something for everyone there.  Unfortunately they won't have all the outdoor exhibits in place until summertime.  I think I'll go to the big ribbon cutting at the Artillery Conference.  Thanks for the words about the MRL!  We'll see if we can't get her finished up nice.

Tony -- looking good on the Sturmtiger, that pencil guide should really help laying down the camo this time round.

Redleg -- Many thanks for the weathering guide, that'll help hugely! There's nothing like the experience of those who were there!

Beav -- The MBRL is sure a fascinating-looking piece of gear, I love the way the cupola is alongside the rocket pack. Finicky work with the masking, you really stuck with it!

Thanks for the research photos of the M110! I had meant to take a shot at wiring and hoses but there's so much of it! Whistling I see there are rubber rims on the wheels -- the profile is so low you can't make them out in the boxtop painting and there's nothing mentioned in the instructions! Hmm, now, how to tackle them? I had thought I was going to be drybrushing wear on resilient steel wheels but somewhat puzzled because I could only solidly trace them to late Nazi hardware...

Okay, now comes the interesting stuff! Fade and shade spraying, get some rusty brown on the tracks, then start making this beast look real!

Well, the final masks are removed (I think I've gotten them all) So here she is:

As you can see, the masks failed a little in some places and let some bleed through.  I'll be patching them up, adding a few oversprays of tan to blend it together, and perhaps going through with some color modulation type stuff.

The colors are off, and thats definitely my bad.  The main color should have been a lot more green, but I think it has been fun anyways.

Beav - There is nothing to fear but fear itself!!

Thunderbolt - Now the M110 is moving along nicely. Here are a few tips

  • The equalibrators (things that look like shocks) and the hydraulic lifters (shocks on the plow) for the recoil spade, their cylinders would be a clean aluminum color
  • The breech block (the door on the back of the tube) will be a steel color
  • The loading tray is a steel color.
  • The gun mount and carriage slide (where they are visable, after assembly) drybrush with steel.
  • The spade will need some good scratches and wear on the leading edge
  • The half round hole in the front is the drivers step.....paint is always worn from stepping
  • The inside of the barrel should be a steel color
  • The rotating gear around the gun carraige (hole in the floor) need dry brush of steel
  • The floor all around the gun needs wear from the crew....especially the back edge....#2 pencil and graphite.
  • Don't forget to have a lanyard lying around

Are you going to show it in travel or emplaced mode??

Taxtp - Nice...looking good

Today's progress on the M110:

I spent a while masking off twenty-something points that need to stay bare plastic, at least for now, then preshaded a few localities with XF-1 Flat Black:

The slides where the barrel meets the gun cradle are protected on both parts, as is the rotation base. The fit of the cradle to the hull was extremely tight even with bare plastic, it would probably be impossible over paint.

Next I mixed XF-62 Olive Drab and applied it overall. It took two large mixings to do all the parts you see here, plus the wheels, jerrycans, seat backs, shell cradle and wheel retainers:

I'm not sure how well the preshading shows through, I'm still getting the hang of it. Next to airbrush will be some faded olive drab on top of the hull and gun, plus a suitable colour on the tracks, then it's over to weathering with the usual round of techniques. The hydraulics need to be painted into bright metal, and the head and tail lights, plus driver's periscopes, will be picked out appropriately...

Cheers, Mike/TB379

Redleg, I'm terrified that it won't turn out and that I'll have to revert to a three tone 'normal' scheme.  I guess we'll find out.
