Well , how's this for a bit of luck and it was right under my nose .

According to Len Lundh's H-34 book , The Fuerza Aerea Argentina impressed a number of civil aircraft into SAR duties during the Falklands War

wingspallete have this colour profile

I can easierly extend the cabin floor and add extra windows and I have a few of those Cobra Co. S-58T resin nose conversion sets

It's only the markings (lettering) which will be a little difficult to find !

She sure would look great sitting next to the HU-5 Wessex Stick out tongue

Awesome photo of the Argentine Chinook Azorean Yes

I really like how the Matchbox/Revell Chinook has gone together , so I just bought a Matchbox kit off ebay and I'll use the Falklands decals from the Airfix kit to pair up with the Argentine Chinook . I wonder what other types of helicopters the Argentine's used in the Falklands War , it would be nice to pair something up with the HU-5 Wessex .

Bish the only pic's of Gulf War RAF Chinooks I have in my files are these two which I got off google images

I have a nice little stash of RAF/RN Gulf War kits

I wish I could find another Heller boxing of the SA330 Puma that comes with those engine intake filters . My kit doesn't have them and I've been thinking of buying the Italeri Super Puma to use those filters on my Heller kit but I don't know if they woulf fit ?

It will be a nice comparison between the RAF and Argentin aircraft. I know from experiance that modern RAF chinooks have black cockpits and all the photos i found showed black. But i have no idea on the Argentin aircraft either.

In regards to that RAF Gulf war scheme, my guess would be a motteling similar to whats used on many WW2 German aircraft. Do you happen to have any photos of the real things.

Dunno if I should admit this, but I actually dreamt that I pulled an Italeri H-34 from the stash last night. I never, ever remember my dreams, and certainly don't have one in the stash. Weird huh ?

We'll have to find another GB for you John, after this one completes. I want to stay in touch with your H-34 crusade.

I've managed to build 5 1/72 Wildcats over the years, with plans to do more. It's taken me 20 something years to get there though, dating back to the days when the only FM-2 was the Airfix thing, and the Hasegawa kits hadn't been released yet.

I've also got 3 or 4 1/72 Hellcats and a few 1/48 Spitfires, but somehow your quest is far more interesting.

I haven't found a group build for them, but I'm also mid way through a build of 5 1/200 Boeing 727-200s, all in different Ansett Airlines markings. I hope to complete that lot this year.

Cheers

Tony

That livery of Ansett 727 builds sounds interesting Tony . I've never built any commercial type of aircraft before and it's only been in the last couple of years I started building WWII era 1/72 aircraft but they were for the early IDF or Korean War , my main interest was from the Vietnam War onwards . I've never built a Wildcat but I have done 5 Israeli Spitfire's in 1/72 scale

I did start a Topic in the Helicopter Forum section on my H-34 builds quite a while back , so I'll have to search around and try and find it so I can add the more recent builds .

Bish , my Chinook will be Argentine Army bird and I found these two pic's on the net last night

I noticed you painted the cockpit area black on your RAF Chinook , I wasn't sure what the Argentine Army had so I just went with gray through out the interior .

Those pic's seem to match whats on the decal sheet . I may have forgot to mention that the decal sheet has five options for five Chinooks , including two HC-1 RAF birds and one is finished in that overall Desert Pink scheme which is why my decals were hiding in the Gulf War stash

I have two Airfix Chinook kits in the stash for both Gulf War birds , although I have no idea how to accomplish the paint scheme from option 2 on the decal sheet .

Anyway I'll continue on with my Falklands helo's

John .

 Azorean:

Why not extend the GB by the end of the year?

Since decal sheets related with the subject are now seeing the day of light it will be great to extend the dateline.

Wait - we can blame an extension on aftermarket decal suppliers?!?!?!  Big Smile Yes

Sounds good to me. We could just leave it open ended until everyone has finished.

I really hope that we can extend the GB for a little while. I am waiting for the decals that I ordered, and a second set Jeremiahs mailed to me.

I promise I will build the neptune quickly...

I'll Ditto Bish - deadlines are great to use as a target, but I don't mind keeping this goinbg a little longer if there is still interest. I got completely sidetracked on the Pucara, I'd like to get that done this summer as well. Carry on!!

This is how far i have got with my second one. in case your woundering why, one of the guys in the block i am in saw my build. He asked if i could do one for him. He managed to find another Matchbox chinook on E-bay, so iw as able to start it last week. He wants the same display i did for mine, except there will only be the Falklands flag on the base.

I have put it on hold for the other GB, but i have to have it finished by the end of July. So going to have to get a move on.

Just need to tidy up the black area and add some wear and tear to the floor.

Vance, don't bother adding this to the front page, no point having two of the same on there.

Ye, i rather liked how that base came out.

Yep, thats the Matchbox kit all right, even the sprue layout is the same. All Revell has done is mold it in one colour and not 3. Nice looking interiour, is this going to be an Argentin aircraft.

Bish , the display base your Chinook is sitting on is the iceing on the cake to a great build ...Toast

I'm reasonably confident I can get the Revell Chinook together and painted this weekend so I made a start on the build .

Sprue frames

There's a little flash here and there and I cleaned up the fuselage halves and interior pieces with some 600 grade sandpaper

I didn't realise until close inspection of the fuselage insided that the Chinook is of Matchbox origin's

I airbrushed the inside parts with Gunze H-317 (FS36231) and then decided to mask for some flat black strips along the cabin floor and rear ramp

I also did the rotors as well seeing I had black in the airbrush

Cockpit close-up

I then glued the two halves together and clamped the join and while the glue is drying I'll continue on decalling the Wessex

I take it Bish that your Matchbox Chinook is the same as my Revell kit ?

In any case everything has fitted quite nicely so far , I guess I'm about halfway with the build already .

More WIP's Tomorrow

John .

John, thank you very much for the compliment. I hope the drooling didn't cause any damage to your current builds.

If you can't do a Chinook for this GB, i think a WiP on the helo board would be a good idea and i will deffinatly follow.

I don't know what Vance thinks, but seeing as theres still interest, i see no harm in letting the GB run on while you guys are still in. I have put my second Chinook on hold as it is entered into the Force of nature GB. I will be getting back to it at the start of July. So i will put the progress pics of that in here to keep things running.

I was kinda hoping for a story about how a Wessex S&R machine plucked you and your family from raging flood waters, thereby cementing a need to build every one ever made as a tribute...  Whistling

I'm sorry to say that I have lead a rather dull , boaring life and my only achievement is that I've been a full time carer for my elderly parents these past eight years and the closest I ever got to a Wessex was a visit to HMAS Albatross , two hours south of Sydney and I took these photo's about ten years ago

I almost cried when I saw this Wessex parked out the back of the musuem hanger ... Crying

I checked that link you posted bish on those Argentine Skyhawk decals and they look really good . I typed into Hannant's search engine , '1/72 Falklands' and saw a HU-5 Wessex / FRS.1 Sea Harrier combo kit which comes with Falklands War markings and are the same a the pic in my Wessex reference book . I wish I had known about this kit earlier , I think I'll order one anyway as I can use another HU-5 Wessex bird .

I also saw some Argentine Chinook markings in 1/72 , which looked familiar . So I checked my Gulf War decal stash and I already have those Falklands Chinook decals . After droolling over the finished pic's of your Chinnok build Bish , I now really regret not building either of my British / Argentine Chinook kits ...Sad

Oh well , I guess it's too late in the GB now for a Argentine CH-47C Revell Chinook , unless I stopped all my other builds and tied a 3 day non stop helicopter build ?

Some of the on-line LHS here in Sydney don't seem to have much commemorating the 30th annaversary of the Falklands War either , I really do wish I had put more effort into this GB .

Ye, i know. They really seem to have slipped up. These sets should have been out at the start of April. What gets me is that Xtradecal is a British company. What with all thats going on in the UK this year, this would have been a great chance to join in the patriotic spirit.

Agreed. Airfix and Dragon did pretty well with the timing but everybody else pretty much who could fell flat. And like you said, with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee you would think the Xtradecal would have better marketing. Back in 1976 when we had the Bicentennial here, there was a plethora of commemorative aircraft markings from all the services and kits and decals to go with it.

Seeing better this Xtradecal sheet don´t bring many of the stencils for the Skyhawks and for the Mirages.

Aztec told me that in the end of this week her decal sheet will be available. Let´s see.

I have an un started GR.3 and nearly ready for paint FRS.1 in 1/48. You would think that these decal companies would have been more savvy  to cash in on the 30 anniversary aspect.

Firewall from "Untangle".  And the odd thing is, the warning that pops up is "online shopping", and I've bought through Sprue Brothers several times while at the office with no problems. Whistling  Must have something to do with the software they use for transactions.
