Falklands/Malvinas War 30th Anniversary GB

I don´t know if you model in 1/48 too, but if you do a friend of mine (the guy who owns Aconcagua Resin Models) makes a wonderful Dagger convertion set for Eduard and Hobbyboss MIII.

I don´t know what particular EA plane are you going to represent but have in mind that only the last batch have the capability to use teh Magic missile, I don´t remember the numbers now, but are the last seven that arrived.

 

el Jere, in aircraft I only build 1/48 and 1/32... I have not built a 1/72 aircraft for me in almost 30 years. The Mirage that I am building now is the old ESCI IIIE kit. but my chosen scales kinda makes me run out of display space quickly on modern jets though... That would be quite an involved conversion to change a Mirage IIIC to a Dagger due to the numerous changes (lengthened fuselage with repositioned cockpit, new nose, shorter engine exhaust area/new afterburner...) between those aircraft. But I do appreciate the information. Right now I am looking at using a Mirage IIIR (which already have most of those changes) as my starting point and I just found Nesher/Dagger nose from PJ productions that may be the answer to my patience on this build. And it was the second batch of IIIEAs 013-019 that were wired to carry the Matra Magic R-550 Missile. I saw that the Aztec sheet was going to have markings for one of those and added the rails to my build.

Azorean, that Wessex looks sweet. Just what I would love for my collection.

That´s what I told you, the last batch was the second batch LOL.

Is not that dificult to convert and MIIIC into a Dagger. The R from Accademy is a poor kit, to say the least!

I did convert a MIIIC into a MIIIEB., is not THAT hard, the conversion (from Aconcagua too) fits great, and you will have a much more accurate Mirage, compared with others brands. (Heller is the most accurate in forms of all, but it has raisd  panels)

If you can, get the Aconcagua conversion, you will not regrat that.

You have the option to get just the nose, or the exterior parts without the interior, or whatever you want.

I just got a Mirage from Hobbyboss you convert it into a Dagger.

Be aware if you want to build one, that most of the aftermarket decals are wrong, because theu use a fount with angles in the corners and should be curves.

Ah yes, the good old turbojet... a bit more of a roaring screech than a turbofan, even one in afterburner. I do miss the days when fast movers used to fly around my area all the time. Now it is only on a rare occasion... That conversion set does look very nice! It looks like it is made for the Heller kit as that one is already "cut" to make a IIIB or IIIC. Decisions decisions...Externally the Academy IIIR does not look too bad- it even has recessed detail. And it actually is based off of the old Fujimi molds. But yes the interior is quite spartan. Very little in there, but a nice plain canvas for scratchbuilding. I also have a couple Heller IIICs along with a Hobbyboss and Eduard IIICJ (Yes I like Mirages) And if I do tackle the Mirage to Dagger conversion, it will be some time down the road. When I have that Aztec decal set!!! I have way too many projects going now...

Todays update is nothing worth taking pictures of... I airbrushed on the base colors on the AAMs. Satin White for the R530 and Satin Light Ghost Gray for the R550s. And I also masked off and painted the mid tail fin leading edge antenna panel that I missed doing earlier. Plus more masking for the wheel wells and the radome, which I will try to get airbrushed aluminum and black (respectively) in the next few days. And I built the gear struts. Almost there!

I'm running a few days behind on my HMS Sheffield. Had a bad couple of weeks with work, and have only just got back to the bench. I've now done all the masking to spray the deck and might even do it tonight.

Is it me, or have these companies slightly missed the boat.

I would like to have seen these anniversary editions out months ago as well, BUT I suppose it's easier to market them closer to the actual anniversary. All sorts of (mostly UK-based) publications have been running features recently, I think Scale Aviation Modeler(?) has a "mostly Falklands" issue coming up next.

(why am i just thinking of this now?? Falklands timeline...)

Yes, tomorrow is the 30th Anniversary of the Argentine surrender and the end of the war.

I should have thought of this earlier myself. But i am sure all have reflected while completing their builds.

Vance, i made a start of that second Chinook on Monday. But i won't include it as its exactly the same as my first build.

The main painting is done on the Sheffield, I've used the colors recommended in the instructions, but I think the deck is too pale. I am considering masking again and going for a darker colour. Oh well, it was a nice clean job.

How "off" do you think it is? Could you assemble it as-is, then give the entire topside a thin overspray??

Thanks for the update Vance. I think it's quite a long way off, as the deck  is not too dissimilar to the hull sides. I'm going to mask and respray. Hopefully will get it done tonight if I have the right colour in house.

Great paint job on the Mirage, stikpusher.

I spoke yesterday with a member of the Aztec staff that told me they already are finalizing the release of the decals likely in the end of next week. Given the magnitude of the project they are taking some time to finalize everything and avoid fails. I believe the wait will be worth it.

I've resprayed the decks on the Sheffield. For the benefit of the assembled audience, the kit instructions call out for Gunze Sangyo H82 (not very) dark grey. For mine, it was just too light and difficult to distinguish from the superstructure. I've resprayed with Tamiya XF-54 which is a little darker and looks closer to what I can see in photos.

Photos tonight or tomorrow, for now it's some detail painting before assembling the superstructure.

Tony, your HMS Sheffield is coming along very nicely. I really do with that Airfix would mold one in 1/350 scale.

!/350 Sheffield is a great idea Stik. I would go for it too.

Actually I was at the Melbourne Model Expo last week, which isa great event and competition. There was a 1/350 HMS Sheffield there, but it was the WW2 vintage one. Great model though.

I've resprayed the decks and started the detail painting. Will do a little construction and post some pics tonight.

Here are some progress pics, the superstructure is not glued on yet. Have a look at the stern deck, it's a separate piece, and it wider than the main deck. Can't find any evidence to support it.

Looking good Tony. I think your right about the stern deck.. Does your kit have an over hang at the bck as well. I found this photo showing the stern.

Thanks for the photo Bish, It answers a lot. The kit has some overhang, but it doesn't look like this. The supports for the deck are shaped differently. They also attach to the part of the deck that I nee to shave off, so there is a little bit of work in correcting this.

Has to be done though.

My apologies for not being a good participant with you Falklands War GB . It's the second time I haven't finished a build for a group build you have been running , shame on me ...

I used to thrive on multiple builds at the one time but with a lot more family commitments this past 6 months , I've been struggling to finish anything .

I failed to do any WIP pic's for my Westland Wessex HU-5 build and this is where I'm am at the moment with the build ;

The Westland Wessex builds are part of a larger Sikorsky / Westland S-58 fleet I started a while back and I finally have some of the builds ready for masking and then painting

Anyway the Falklands HU-5 is close to masking , I'm dry fitting the canopies but leaving them off to paint seperatly as I've been having issue's with helicopter canopies of late showing smudge marks and the like from the inside , which is very frustrating .

My apologies again Bish for missing out on all the awesome WIP pic's and finished builds everyone has done ;

I guess when i finish my build and the others , I'll post them in the helicopter section .

Hiya Helo, no worries, i know things can get in the way. Vance can confirm, but i think we are letting the GB run for builds to finish. Theres still a couple on going. So you can still keep it in the GB if you want. Would be nice to have that in the line up.

For reference I've taken the same approach with the wessex and Sikorsky builds through out and here a several WIP pic's of what I usually do .

First up airbrush the interior pieces FS.36231 (H-317)

Italeri mold everything in blue with the HU-5 wessex and with the cabin seating blue in colour anyway I only had to paint the seat legs and frame with some silver

The only addition to the cabin section is a ceiling piece cut from sheet plastic which I scribed some lines on at 45 degree angles and painted it light gray . The scribe lines are to simulate soundproofing material along with a couple of small pieces of resin block to represent the rotor drive shaft covering . You can see how it looks on this next reference pic

I do the same on each build .

The only other minor issue with the Wessex is the removal of the molded on lugs directly above the top of the landing gear strut ;

You need to do this so the cable ducting piece can fit under the cockpit windows ;

I also filled in the lower step recess as the Wessex has protruding footstep pieces and the lower one is directly below the upper step ..

Everything else fits quite well with no issue's , so it's on to masking and painting .

Thanks for extending the deadline fellas. I'm pushing on with the Sheffield. Some more superstructure completed, again just placed for the photo, and a host of small parts all painted and ready to fit. I've also reshaped the rear deck, and attached it, although obviously the join needs to be made good.

Bloody hell. I guess that answers the question as to whether you buy multiple kits. I thought i was bad with my 251 stash. You have me beat there.
