The group build to end all group builds - THE GREAT WAR

Got the main fuse assemble along with the stabelizers and tail. The main airframe is flat black and the undersides are sky blue/green/gray whatever it is. Then I added the streaking effect with a not quite drybrush, but wetter than drybrushing if that makes sense. Not sure if this scheme ever existed in 1:1 but far as I see it there were alot of tripes in WWI, photos don't exist of all of them, and I didn't wanna red barron (sorry guys that did one).

Cockpit done. I lost part #7 (instrument bar) somewhere so I'll have to see about making a replacement. Colors probably aren't correct, most likely it won't be too noticeable since the hole you can see down in there is about the size of a pinhead anyway.

Also if anyone is looking for a build idea, here's an interesting story. In 1912 after the infamous sinking of the RMSM Titanic, construction was halted on the third of the Olympic class trio. The name was supposedly to have be RMS Gigantic, however White Star denied the claim and officially named the hull Britannic. Construction on the new ships hull was stalled until 1913 and numerous new safety measures were put in to effect including watertight bulkheads extending to to B deck and a new style of davit called a gantry davit. These new davits could hold 15-20 boats each and had the capability to reach clear across the ship if need be. Other features including a childrens playroom and a pipe organ were added in an effort to make her even more impressive than her sisters. By 1915 the Britannic was nearly complete when the British Government began requisitioning ocean liners for use as troop transports and hospital ships. The RMS (now HMHS) Britannic's interiors were removed and the interiors converted to dormatories, operating rooms, and patient wards, as well as makeshift morgue was added on the fantail. On 11/21/1916 just after 8 am the Britannic was steaming through the Kea channel off the coast of Greece when she hit a mine laid by a German U boat. only 32 people were killed, most of those during a miscommunication where as her captain made an attempt to beach his ship on an island 2 miles away some of the lifeboats were launched and sucked in to the spinning propellers. About 60 minutes later the ship had sank in about 300 feet of water.

I started my bumblebee sized Dr. I tonight since I got mad at another project I was working on. I'll pop a few pics in tomorrow night of the quarter sized (if that) cockpit.

Well heck if the end date is listed as indefinately I'll throw in my little (and by little I mean microscopic) Revell 1/72 Fokker Dr. 1 'The Red Baron". I'm about 10% done on it, thrown in a to-do pile for a long time, may as well do something on it here and there between major tasks on larger builds.

But I would really like to try something like this , but I only seem to find people who only half explain what they do, or they just post some pic's and don't explain at all what they're actually doing...

Ninetalis, very nice Dr.1 ya got there . Something about that bird painted all red just sets it apart from anything else. For rigging wire, stretched sprue will work in a pinch. Good thing about that bird is there ain't much of it. Not sure if Revell included a rigging diagram, but Eduard did, and it can be found on their site.

Hey all, I finished the Fokker yesterday, she's 99% done,
just need to put some more subtle accent details on it.

Sadly enough, I don't have any progress pic's of this project, my camera's battery died so while it was reloading I finished this little guy.
Some big issue that I had was that I had used the wrong part for the struts on the main landing gear, those parts were to be placed between the main fuselage and the upper wing...
After a lot of sweat, swearing, cutting and glueing I fixed the darn thing! yeehaw! 

I was thinking to rig the model, but I have no idea how, and I found a few good explanations (I think) but I don't have the right wire laying around. I will stop by the store some time and rig it, but for the time beeing, it is done. Also, any sites explaining how to rig stuff are still welcome!
There are also a lot of firsts on this one,
first complete airbrush, first non-WWII, first WWI, first time I used my 'Tamiya mud pen', first wood grain prop...
I'm really proud about the wooden prop! But no more blabla, here are the pic's.

here is my progress on the Fokker so far!

Marc, once the winter months draw closer (late Oct-Nov) I should be starting on that  WnW Fe2b.

Last night I thought i heard a noise coming from some dark far away pace.  It was you guys rummaging around in here.  I thought this had finally bled out.  I see that's not the case  WOOHOO!  Looking forward to some progress ninetails.

Happy to help! There's very little to do in the way of rigging on the DR.I. Most of it is confined to the tailplane area in the form of control wires. Up front, you have the bracing wires on the main gear and between the cabane struts, with a pair of control wires connected between the upper deck just aft of the guns and the upper wing. These are all easily installed after assembly and painting.

Ninetalis, nice pick-up on the Revell kit. It is indeed a re-pop of Eduard's kit, which I've built one of and have another in the stash. The kit goes together very well. The only assembly I found tricky was the main landing gear. You will need to open up the 4 mounting holes in the part sandwiched between the top and bottom airfoil halves, as well as shorten up the 2 front struts by about 1/16" (from the top of the struts - this is important) to get 'er to sit correctly.

...and about that kit (and WnW's in general) - man, I don't know how they do it. 1/32 scale, over 300 parts, PE, the best decals and instructions in the biz (IMHO), incredible fit and detail, and free shipping, all for only $89 !? I mean, what the heck are they doing right that so many other companies banging out 1/32 stuff are not? Seriously, those 150-200 dollar price tags are downright insulting.

Hey Theuns, the D7 came out really nice!  You finished her up quickly!  I really like that vivid color scheme you chose, very eye catching!  Glad to see more bipes here, someone's got to show me how to do it right!  (just kidding Mike, Jack, Paul, & Marc!)

Mike, congrats on the early anniversary gift!  I was going to say you made out like a bandit with the WnW FE.2b, but I think the wifey came out on top with the 1.2 carats!!

I'll be getting back to the Pfalz when I finish up a couple more projects, but still hanging around checking things out!  

So, even though our anniversary is not until the end of July, my wife and I decided to exchange gifts yesterday, and I must say see really knows how to pick 'em. Needing some ideas, I showed her a few ebay auctions (Tamiya's 1/32 P-51, Revell 1/32 Float plane), and the link to WnW's site. She made a great choice - when I opened the box, there was a Late version FE.2b from WnW. Man, what a kit! 18" wingspan, tons of rigging, and over 340 parts. This is gonna be a fun build for sure!

Oh yeah, and I have to say that 1.2 carats looks really nice on her finger.

Xstream1 - nice to have you on board! I love the DXII ! WnW makes one in 1/32 and I'm very tempted to pull the trigger on it!

Theuns - that lozenge is phenomenal. Amazing results! I built the WnW SE.5. It's a great kit - goes together easy. The most complex part of the build is the rigging - it's quite extensive, so just take your time and plan ahead. Looking forward to seeing your build!

Theuns, your D7 looks quite nice from the photos.  We are all our own worst critics on our builds!  After the photos showing the lozenge outline decals, I was quite surprised on how well the lozenge turned out.  I am sure your SE5 will be a lot easier, just take your time and if you need to ask questions.  We are all here to help as well.

G'day, first time posting. Would i be right joining with a Toko 1/72 Pfalz XII? I am considering doing it as a brightly colored mock up, a concept piece if you will similar to something from the Richthofens Squadron and his Albatross D V.

I ordered it last week and it should hopefully arrive by tomorrow afternoon.

As you can see there is a "cover" over the cockpit as there is absolutely NO detail there atall, not even a seat!

Here is the Revell 1/72 D-7 in kit form.

There is no cockpit detail what soever so I will cover it up with a "cloth cover"

They suply decals for the Lozenge that has to then be painted in the blocks, even with the diagram it is still rather confuzing as the pattern changes in the same decal.

I had to "future on " the decals as they just didn't want to stick down atall.

To attach the top wing was an eye opener as to how fidly these small biplaned really are for the inexperienced.

Almost complete with the model ,will post pix.

Oh Mine H.E!  Bringing the build experience up another notch here.  Fantastica detailing as usual and appreciate the great step by step insights.  Marc's putting real stitiching in and your're creating real vent openings, next thing you guys going to do is shrink a real person to sit in the cockpit.
