Wow, Kermit! Great stuff! I wish I had your speed, I could actually get something done for once! I have the non- flak version in the stash, and I can't wait to get it started. Using any PE sets? Are you going to use the canvas coverings on the railings or leave them exposed? Red or dark gray below the waterline? I like the version using the red and white stripes on the forward deck.

Made the UZO today, looks ok, but at least better than the kit part. Lengthened the attack scope base with milliput as well, so lots of sanding tomorrow.

Rob,

Thank you for your interest!Smile Well... it's basically gonna be an OOB build but i do have a crew set to add in various poses. And if it just so happens i am happy with the end result i just miiiight pop it in a water base.... No promises yet but i bought the kit like  a year ago with that dio in the back of my head.

The instructions call out for the dark grey antifouling while the box pictures on the side show one with red antifouling and dark grey bootstripe.... Looking at pics on the net prior to the build i kinda decided it will add interest to the build with the red so i am going that way. And reading through build logs i did find that one with the red and white air recognition striping. Looked great but i am not sure wether or not to attempt it....

Kermit wow man ! err froggie Stick out tongue You are moving along on this build, gonna haffta start callin you Kermit the Fast Froggie. Big Smile Hey took your advise about the added future on the water, now it has 8 coats on it and looks much better.

Maxfax I believe it was you a while back asked if the dio was going to have life boats included, the answer is yes, however not stack smoke for this one. Tried smoking some cotton ball material and just didnt look good.

So I am calling this build and my very first diorama finished Surprise There are figures in the life rafts and on both the sub and destroyer but my camera just will not capture them very well, my eyes are still hurting and feelin crossed from putting them on yesterday. Oh and the carpet monster was well fed from my losing them, they pop out of tweezers really well let me tell ya, and I think one of them is still lurking under a finger nail.

I do have to give credit and thank both Kermit and Bysamato for their advise on the coloring of the water as it wouldnt have come out this well without their help.

Hope you all like it. Comments are welcomed.

Randy,

Indifferent

What can i say my friend, you have certainly outdone yourself this time. I am, as Gamera put it so eloquently in your NMF GB, gobsmacked and in awe at the lifelike appearance of your water dio. The green and future sure payed off bigtime and i really love the "choppyness" of the water for lack of a better word.

The added lifeboats really add alot of drama to the dio and tell you an obvious story, as should any good dio do. I can really imagine those figures giving you nearsightedness and headaches putting together my man!

My friend, i would call this among the best i have seen from you and i am truely impressed. Three Bow DownBow DownBow Down's for you and a big Beer on me! Well done indeed!

And while i am at it.... (im really kinda jealous of Randy so i have to butt in here.....LOL)

Todays work ended up with me finishing hull painting and painting the wooden deck fittings as well as securing and painting the deckhouse. About an hour ago i added a light wash to blend everything in but i havent tidied that up yet so it may look a bit crude.... Also forgive the bad artificial lighting...busted a bulb and had to work with a bulb that has rather cold light. The wood is really alot browner in real life.

Also over the course of this week i have been experimenting with giving styrene a definate "wood look". From the net i have borrowed this technique where you add a heavy layer of raw umber artists oil paint to a very yellow ochre acrylic undercoat. These oilpaints take days to dry so i had ample time to process it. After about 24 hours i took a foam cube, lightly coated that with mineral spirit and wiped some off in straight angles so you get the idea of veneer. Kinda neat and certainly worth doing again.

Kermit. Holy cow!! The time it took me to make one 1/72 scale UZO, you practically built the S-100!! You'll be done by midweek! Looks great!

Vetteman. Great job on the dio. I'm on my iPad and can't remove the bold for some reason. Those figures are about 3 mm or so? Must have been a challenge to paint on pupils....

Bsyamato:  I'll try to get a pic or two up tomorrow. Nothing as exciting as the above, but at least you can see I haven't been twittling my thumbs...

Guys in my excitement to finally get my dio finished I neglected to add the story behind it. It depicts a sea battle between a US Destroyer and a German U-boat. The U-Boat had suffered heavy damage from depth charges, the Destroyer mean while had taken a couple of torpedo hits, and was slowly sinking. So with no ammo left on either craft the U-Boat surfaces and the Destroyer Commander decides to ram the sub, which has been set to self destruct, with only partial engine power and no rudder control. If you wish to see how this all turns out and, you can find the movie, its an old Robert Mitchum movie made in 1957 I believe, called " The Enemy Below " Its a great one showing the story from both sides. And a good one to add to a collection with U-571 and Das Boot.

Kermit I am really liking your build !!!!! And do plan to remember your wood graining trick. I also wish to thank you for your very very kind praise of my build.

And Bysamato my thanks to you for your very kind words. Really without you two giving advise the water would never have come out as well as it did.

Now its on to try and get a B-29 going again for the NMF group, and a sprint car for the dirt car group.

Guys,

Amazing how fast your GB thread can land on page 3...Wink

Been plugging away at my schnellboot steadily every day and i think i am about two thirds through the construction phase. I must say that this kit, for it's very modest pricetag of EUR.17,99 is bristling with detail. Every time i work on her it just strikes me. A sheet of PE would only enhance what is already a very honest and well engineered kit.

Some pics then...

The pikes or whatever they are attached to the sides of the deck at the bow are done in a similar wood graining fashion as i did with the stand. Really love the effect now that i have tinkered with the technique for a bitSmile Also i endeavoured to hollow out the funnels attached to the armored deckhouse by riddling it with holes using a hand drill and then connecting the dots with my trusty no.11...

Work in progress....

Wow, Richard. That looks amazing! I'm struggling to get any modelling time. Lack of time as well as enthusiasm.... Almost done the scratchbuilding of the attack periscope. Going away on vacation on Friday to Grand Canyon, so may not be able to get any pics up for a couple of weeks.

Thank you all guys. I just cant believe i let that box sit for so long in my stash... Im having loads of fun with it!

The construction is now complete apart from adding the life preservers and a tiny bit of rigging astern. Getting ready for the decals and a dull coat.

I decided to A. Go for the version with the quad flak and B. Dont add canvas to the railings. To me and in my taste this gives the most menacing look to it if you will.

See for yourselves:

And yesterday i started priming and painting some crew figures. It is the revell kriegsmarine figure set. The picture doesnt show all of em btw. Prior to priming i Ca-ed them to a piece of wood to facilitate the painting assembly line styleSmile:

Hope you guys enjoy the pics!Yes

Randy,

The figures are 1/72 scale, just like the model. It is a ten buck revell set but the figures aren't bad at allSmile

Hello Everyone,

Been a long time since I posted pics! Lots of stressful situations here at the moment- haven't had much drive to work on the sub, but finally got some stuff done recently. I scratch built the attack periscope base and UZO. The base was lengthened by 5 mm, and all the piping was added using solder. Plastic card and punched out bolts for the base of it. The UZO is better than the kit part, but is not that accurate, but an improvement. The flak canon and 88 done, only some added PE parts and scratch built parts. All the molded in plastic hatches etc on the tower were replaced with PE parts, as well as the grills on the air intake trunks. I am glad to say that all I need to do is finish the railings, some more PE on the deck and finish the upper net cutter assembly. I'm finally ready to start painting! I'll update after the first coats are on. I also received the Eduard Royal Class ME 109 kit today. I am a glutton for punishement!

Hello Frightful,

I think it is just you and me here- Richard is running the show but is probably involved in several other projects, so I say you are good to go!

Do you plan on adding any AM parts? It would be nice if CMK would do interior modules like for the VIIc, I am not sure if that is in the works.

Oh definitely AM my first real try.  I got the Eduard set for the Gato.  Why do you want interior parts a sub is closed?

Rob,

I have seen your post the day you posted it but couldnt find the time to get on and react yet... My apologies. Well,... what can i say. What is already a gorgeous kit OOB is only enhanced by your meticulous aftermarket addons. I was simply drooling all over my screen man! Absolutely amazing to watch every update and i can only commend you for your patience. Some of it must drive you up the wall to assemble. Three chears from across the pond!

Frightful,

Welcome to the silent service corner my friend. I was waiting for someone to start that beast for the GB... Wether you go the aftermarket route or just go OOB and concentrate on the painting is all the same to me as long as you have fun doing it Wink Your build will be listed on the front page ASAP sir!

As for me...

Summer is hitting hard in these parts so my modeling has gone a bit slower..... I am however in the finishing stages of the schnellboot and hope to post smt soon

Time to save this thread from the bottom of page two LOL... Theres just little going on here at the moment but i will patiently keep going since there is still immensely great quality being posted. Art takes time shall we say?

I am posting the finished up pictures of my own schnellboot including the crew. It took me awhile to finalize her but all is well that ends wellWink

I just noticed the guy standing just next to the command cabin on the starboard side should be holding some rope..... Got plenty of it here around and i promise by the time i put this one on the shelf he will be sorry i noticedBig Smile

I do hope you guys like my model and you are most welcome to speak up in any way!

Lastly i would like i will be starting a new model for this GB soon even though the going is slow at the bench at the moment... I plan on starting another 1:144 Revell sub. This time a VIIC/41, the same one as the 1:72 one i built for round one just smaller.

After asking around a bit i did find some passable crew figures for this one. There is no navy crew figures in 1:144 on the market that i know of but somebody suggested using N scale (1:160) figures used by the train guys.. And my LHS just so happened to have something i think i can work with: a N scale train conductor figure set... Hey at least they are in uniform Stick out tongue

Now this is one of those GB's i would have loved to take part in but just not able to at the moment. But if i had known someone was building the Revell 72nd VIIc i would have paid more attention. I have just finished getting the last bits of AM for mine, but it will be a while before i get round to it.

maxfax, apologies if you mentioned it before, but is that the Eduard PE set your using.

Kermit,

Excellent work as always! I have this kit in the stash to do as well- bought for $10 CDN! Where did you get those excellent figures?

The VIIc is painted, still stuff to build on the deck. Will post pics in a week or two.

Hello Bish,

I remember a long time ago reading that you were going to do this kit- I was looking forward to seeing it. I used mainly the Eduard PE as well as some WEM (or was it Yankee Model works?) PE, mainly for the vent screens near the bottom of the hull. They overlap with the Eduard kit, and are not as good. I also used some PE from Yankee model works( or was it WEM), but not much was used- mainly the templates.

Ye, i think that when i got the kit last year. I have just finished getting the last AM bits for mine. I just got a PE set from WEM, but it was thge one for the flood, drain and vent holes. I did notice their normal PE set was very similar to the Eduard, which i already had. I'm just waiting on the wooden decks to arrive. But i still won't be building it for a while, until i have space enough to build and display it.

Looking forward to seeing some more pics.
