I just picked up the Italeri 1/48 Spitfire IX American Aces edition for $25 at my LHS.  The decal sheet in this kit makes it a bargain.  I think I'll be doing WZ-JJ of Lt John Fawcett, 309th FS/31st FG. 

 

I found a book called Woodbine Red Leader by George Loving in a used book store.  He was a member of the 309th and flew Spits and Mustangs in the Med.  Ended up with 5 kills in the Stang.  Great stories of WWII air combat.

I have that very same kit. I still cant decide which one to do.

ww2pyscho, how do you feel about Seafires? i'm starting the Airfix Mk47 in a week or so...It would be a crossover and of course i'll still be doing the Hasegawa 1/48 MkVIII. later on...

As far as Im concerned a seafire is pretty much the same as a spitfire except with a tail hook and folding wings, so its fine. Its in the magazine I have so it checks out.

Another Spitfire is on it's way home, this one was found in the Orne estuary near Caen...The remains of it's pilot Flt Ltn Henry "lacy" Smith of 453 Sqd RAAF were found in the wreckage and were buried with full honors today at Ranville war cemetary...

The Spitfire was shot down by AAA on the 11th of June 1944.... it  will be shipped to the RAAF museum at Point Cook for preservation...

Sweet! Ive seen a spitfire in person, breifely seen one fly. I hope I can actually see one in an airshow sometime.

Those are some interesting badges I will say. We'll have to vote on one to be it, or we can do what the P-38 GB did, take one that you like.

If we are voting, my vote is for badge # 2.

I have some pics of some progress.

Pics aren't that stunning I know. But I hope you can see that I added the lever for the radiator flaps which protrudes next to the left side of the pilot's seat. On the right side of the seat I added another lever, though its function I'm not aware of. My thoughts are perhaps its to adjust the position of the seat but I"m not sure. I also added the lever for the undercarriage controls as well as some other minor details. Scratch built the O2 bottle but that won't even be visible once she is closed...oh well. Lastly, I opened the cockpit door which adds a nice touch in my opinion.

Now then, on to the complicated stuff. You'll see in this picture that there is much filling and sanding to do...as much as can be expected from one of these Revell kits.

I'd built this kit before and I forgot about that nasty little gap by the windscreen. The wing roots aren't really going to be much of a problem.

Any way, I'll get to this when I can. There is sort of a line in front of her now as I have several other GB entries waiting for a coat of paint before the deadline.

OH NO!!!! Just realized I didn't paint the bit of fuselage BEHIND the retracted canopy! Boooooo me! I may be able to remove it, hopefully. Idiot.

Just so everyone knows, I'll be turkey hunting this week starting today and going till saturday or sunday depending on when/if I get one, so responses will be slow.

Oddman- that was a bugger- I hope you get the canopy off without cracking it.

Psycho- I vote for badge #2, although perhaps any one should be fine- the heart shaped one does have my interest!

I got started on my Airfix Mk IX this week.  Just minor stuff like dipping the canopy in Future, interior paint, exhausts, prop, spinner and wheels.  I'm not sure of the protocol as this is my first GB, but here's a picture:

I was painting an Airfix Spitfire Mk IIa (using the 3DKits conversion) in the early DFS this week so painted the spinner sky on this one while the airbrush was going.  I'm not sure yet I want another DFS Spitfire right now, but most of my AM decals are for DFS.  The alternatives are Desert Scheme or High Altitude Scheme.  I thought I had markings for a FR Mk IX, which would be PRU Pink, but don't.  I don't have to commit until I start applying the exterior color...

No real progress beyond what I've already shown, except that I was able to remove the canopy with no problem! [sigh of relief]

I decided to improve the cockpit a bit.  The basic seat in the kit doesn't even look like a fighter seat!  More like an easy chair.  I used the seat and control column from the 3D-Kits upgrade set for the Airfix Mk I.  I also put a bit of rod on the armor to represent the head rest.  Once closed up and the canopy on it, the details aren't visible, but you can sort of see the seat/head rest.  The first IX I did looked odd which is why I'm doing this.  Nothing on the sides or dash are visible so I didn't do anything there.

I also sanded off the wheel well bumps on the upper wings.  Those represent post-war mods (mid-1945 anyway) and I know I want this to be either Fall 1944 or Spring 1945.
