I'm quite impressed with the Eduard Zoom set for the little Mig's cockpit.

I'm not sure it would work so well in 1/48, but in 1/72 the PE parts look great, and there is no way I could paint a 1/72 IP!Tongue Tied

Managed to prime the Mig yesterday, which showed a few small glitches.

Just spent some time re-scribing the front equipment bay cover, and giving the undercarriage & bays a coat of light blue.

Made some progress on the Airfix Mig.

I ended re-scribing the nose avionics bay hatch again, as it came out a little crooked, so filled, and re-scribed.

In order to get the curve consistent, I made a scribing template out of plastic sheet, having first used a piece of tape over the kit scribing to get the correct pattern.

This was held in place with Tamiya tape, and first a line was drawn around it to determine how accurate my template was.

Good enough for me, so I re-scribed.

The Mig was then re-primed, and several coats of gloss black applied to show up any faults which the primer had not made obvious.

It was at this point I realised that I was almost out of gloss black, hence the highly thinned paint.

The wheel bays had previously been painted with a pale blue, along with the undercarriage components, then masked with Blu Tack.

I'll let that harden over night, then give it a polish in the morning before applying the NMF tomorrow.

Must admit is is tempting to just leave it gloss black and out the red stars on, for that evil Hollywood Mig look.

That looks great Karl! Are you using Alclad lacquer?

Casper, I always use Tamiya or Gunze acrylics as I share the craft room with my wife.

I have made some progress on the Mig this week, spending most of my evenings tinkering with the NMF to get something interesting.

The Mig 15s were painted with a clear varnish, so that the variations in the metal were still visible. I've noticed this in a lot of pictures of Korean war Migs. Even the camo'd machines appear to have been varnished as they exhibit a high sheen.

I

I started off with a base coat of Tamiya Chrome Silver, which was left to dry for an hour before being buffed with a cotton wool pad. This helps remove the slightly rough finish you sometimes get with Tamiya acrylics, before applying a coat of Future.

I then masked off various access panels, as well as the flight surfaces and sprayed Tamiya Metallic Grey, by way of some variation.

The red intake is just tacked in place, but adds a welcome splash of colour.

Next stop decals.

Hi Karl, I do like the panel variation. Once the decals are on it should look even better. It's that sudden leap from plastic plane to realistic stencils and colour that I like at this stage.

Thanks for the comments guys, I'm quite pleased with how the NMF turned out considering it's just Tamiya acrylic.

Got the decals on my Mig 15.

I was nervous about using the Airfix decals, as previous experience has not been good, however these went on beautifully with Mr Mark Softener & Setter snuggling them down nicely.

I've since applied the was and am sorting out the little additions.

I'll be replacing the guns, pitot, which isn't supplied, and aerial mast with items made from brass, should make them look a bit better than the kit items.

So almost finished.

Bysamato, I've had similar problems in the past with Airfix.

Well I'm calling this one done, having added brass pitot, guns and antenna mast.

The obligatory underside view.

Here's some shots of a couple of builds I completed earlier in the year.

Has' venerable Mig27.

I first built this when I was about 14, and had fond memories of this kit.

...and now the even older Mig 25, my first attempt at a postwar Russian jet.

I ended up re-scribing chunks of this due to the amount of filling and sanding it took to sort the fuselage seams out.

I've only got two MiG on the shelf....Monogram's MiG-29, and a MiG-21 from a company called OEZ. Both 1/48. The -29 was my introduction back into modeling after a few years break, and the -21 was my first foiling attempt:

Hey all. Well I got started on my Mig-17. I figured after the last couple builds I recently finished this might be a a good "easy" brake. The DML kit is pretty good with the detail you would expect. There are some seam issues, including the main fusilage that is just giving me major issues. It just seems to reappear on it's on. I initially started out thinking I was going to do a Jian of the PRC, but have decided to use the Egyptian AF marking provided. I figure with all the other Mig and Su kits I have there will be plenty of "red" stars. here are some pics.

Well.....she is finished. I was very thankful for this build. Nice break. Also allowed me to work on my NMF....still need some fine tuning. It was my first time working with Testors Metalizer AB paints. Here are the pics.

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0][View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0][View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0][View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

Some of the issues I ran into: The canopy does not fit together and must be left open. The decals for the fusalage and wing bands were too short....I ended up painting them....lucky for me the Tamiya colors I used worked out ok and matched the Egyptian AF markings. All feedback is welcome.

bsyamato: Thanks. I noticed the nose after I had painted it. I was really suprised because there were notches to help line them up and I still had issues. I really thought  the fit on this kit would have been better being a Dragon kit. Overall it was a great kit to at least learn some things on.

As far as the antenna I had trouble finding some good pics showing the wire. I will probably tweek it if I com across some new info.

it's too late but here some link

And the main link with some picture, the wire seem only attacked near the cockpit to the tail, not in the middle.

Strange that dragon not put the nose pins Hmm i can expect this from amodel or other shortrun factory..

whoa, where did everybody go? its so quiet!!! Surprise

This labor day weekend allowed me to take some time off from my studies and give my brain a break. I started construction on the little Zvezda MiG-3. There was no cockpit detail whatsoever. I scratch built some simple details to busy it up, but didnt go crazy because the canopy could not be posed open to show anything off.

Good work Owl, should be just the right level of detail for this scale. I like revealing just the hint of detail and this should work well.

I went trucking on and forgot to take pics of the finished cockpit detail! oops Dunce ....nothing much, just the sidewall detail shown earlier and seat belts. I completed the construction stage and had a bit of puttying to do!! The fit of wing join on this kit wasn't that good.

after that was finished, I painted the summer camo in preparation for decaling and the white wash. I'll be doing this similar to how the original planes were painted, quickly and by hand!  Wink

and, the little MiG is finished! I applied white acrylic paints with a brush over the enamel base camo, making sure to not paint over the markings. After it was dry, I smoothed/scuffed it up with some steel wool. Then the exhaust stains were applied by first dry brushing grey along the stain trail. Then using black, I dry brushed the darkest stains closer to the exhaust.

The wheel wells were too shallow, but I felt too lazy to carve them out; so I just added some basic ribbing detail instead. The antenna was made from invisible thread super glued in position and colored black with a permanent marker. I really like how everything turned out! Propeller

as always comments/critiques are appreciated!
