I finally got around to starting my MiG-3

this is the first ever kit ive built that wasnt airfix

i think the cockpit detail is pretty good for what it cost.

i added seatbelts & the kit even came with a decal for the control panel.

Cool another Mig prop! Welcome to the world outside of Airfix! I seem to remember you saying you picked up a Tamiya Zero. Can't wait to see how that goes as well.

Cheers

Yes i did pick up a Tamiya Zero in 1:48, at McCanns model world, i also picked up a Hobbyboss 1:72 P-40N this month.

I'm going for the Red 02, for this kit.

well the revell kit didn't give a very good first impression! first of all the fit was terrible! the cockpit didnt want to fit in the fuselage! and then the body halves had no guide holes to hold the fuselage together! (same thing with the wings).

the wings also needed filler!? (i havent assebled the wings to the fuselage yet).

the props cone didnt fit with another segment so i had to sand some more....

so much filler and sanding!!!

Anyway here are some pics, as always comments are appreciated! Smile

I had to come in with my hobby knife, and cut out sections so the seat/cockpit will fit in!

yes, more filler needed, don't miss under the engine. Revell sure did better kits than the little mig, i have the gannent and the phantom and the greif in 1/72 and can assure are between the best kits i never see in this scale.

Sorry for no updates on my foxhound but triyng to finish other less modded kits for others gb that going at end.

I consulted lots of reference pictures and an hard work of full scratch needed on the afterburner section, totally wrong on the kit.

thanks for pointing that out! Surprise

i never noticed there was still a seam there.

well the wings are on, i dont need to worry about how well they fit, i know they will need filler anyway, what im worried about is whether the wings are straight Tongue Tied

BTW, I'm going to be using my airbrush for this model, ive never used an airbrush before. So i have no idea how this will turn out... Big Smile

I'll probably prsctice on some wood or something...

to practice with the airbrush, you could also just fill the little cup with water and spray it on some scrap cardboard. GO through the different nozzle openings, air pressure, and distances to get a feel for how the airbrush handles. The water will show up dark on the cardboard, and you dont have to worry about wasting expensive airbrush paint.

Where did everybody go???

well this wings are on, i filled those huge seams that make the grand canyon look small.

and i tried something new, pre-shading, since my airbrush isnt up and running yet, i couldnt use the airbrush for pre-shaing so Kermit gave me the idea of using a pernament marker.

lol, Stick out tongue

Well I pre-shaded the plane, (using Kermits technique of a pernament marker), and played with the airbursh a bit, and i think i can have a shot at spraying the MiG. Just got too make & set-up a paint booth, and find a spot for it! Indifferent

Hey redbaron, you won't know yourself when you start airbrushing! It makes all the difference. Just as important is the space you find for doing the airbrushing. Anyways, welcome to the next level! Big Smile

Why not practice on an old out-of-date build or Mule as they are referred to? I think you'll get a better feel and understanding using real paint on a kit. 2 cents

well i just sprayed the first coat on my MiG.

and, it took ages to even get my airbrush to spray paint, i just clogged it up! (i put paint in before piller) my second attempt didnt work either the mixture was too thin!

i think the hardest part is mixing the paint with the thinner!

Learning to use the brush with water is good but also using paint for the first time pays to practice on an old bit of kit not being used or something like that. I remember my first time with the airbrush, I didn't have the needle retracting properly so no paint came out. Can't wait to see some pics.

you may have to wait a few hours, before i can give you soemthing decent to look at. Embarrassed

your in hobart so we have almost identical timezones, so you will get to see pics today.

there is no such thing as a 'cheap' kit in my LHS. to me anything over $10 is not cheap. (my wallet is kinda empty at the moment).

just went outside to check on my MiG, the finish is near to perfect!!! anyone believe in beginers luck? well being white, with pre-shading. Its gonna need a few coats.

UPDATE* Here are pics Casper: well i used about 4 coats of white and ran out of white after two coats! The white is all that is airbrushed, the green is sprayed with tamiya olive drab2 rattle can. But i will be spraying the bottom with the airbrush.

the white does have what some call a "orange peel texture" but i rubbed it down with some 0000 steel wool.

remember this is my first time ever using the airbrush!

Well done with the airbrush Real, i think Yes i have not one Surprise

if you allow some advice, my opinion is to improve the sanding steps (take a good look to the bottom radiator, under the cockpit) , with the airbrush imperfection will more visible, and on the canopy try to remove imperfection with a toothpick before the color is too dry.

Nice improves i see on your work during your sharng in the forum Yes

Thankyou very much. I didnt use any filler for that airwent uderneath. the paint just gathered up a lot in that spot, nothing a little work with the hobbyknife cant fix.

thanks my dad has also noticed my improvements, this MiG will not be as good as my P-39, only because this is my first time with the airbrush, i can still get a better finish from a rattle can, i am very good with a rattle can, i even used it inside to spray a small segment of my P-39.

How do you prevent/stop the orange peel texture, with the airbrush?

sorry i don't use airbrush Sad for the peel off i resolved with using only enamels (i had peel off only with acrilycs)

Probably ,as with brush paint, a primer coat can resolve, even the washing of pieces can aid the grip of colors.

As rules i don't wash the sprues but just use as primer an high thinned gray enamel, the thinner with the color provide to a good wash of surfaces. Another way is to sand all the surfaces with fine sandpaper but in some cases can destroy surface details.

Some other that use airbrush can add some more effective advice  Yes

to help with orange peel, try thinning the paint a bit and using a lower air pressure.  If I do get orange peel, I sand it down with steel wool.

Owl is right. White is one of the hardest colours to airbrush, including (from experience) yellow and red. Don't be afraid to not cover the surface entirely on a pass. These type of coats work best with mulitple light passes to slowly build up the colour.

Thanks Bsyamato, OWL and Casper.

I'm spraying the bottom today, and i did tone down the orange peel affect with some 0000 steel wool.

Red Baron if I may toss in a sugestion or two, it looks like you are holding the air brush a bit too far away from the model and the paint is drying before it reaches the surface. I hold mine about 4 inches from the surface with between 10 and 12 psi. That seems to work best for me with Tamiya paints. I also have had troubles using alcohol or Tamiyas thinner for acrylic paints, they just seem to dry too fast. I use distilled water and thin the paint 50/50. If you are still having trouble you can always add a bit of retarder to the paint, you can get that at most art suppy stores. It will slow down the drying and it also helps a bunch with clogging the tip of your brush.

Anyway white and yellow drive me nuts when I paint with them because you cant see if the paint is going on too dry or not, you dont get that wet look right under the tip of the airbrush which is what you are looking for.

So welcome to the world of airbrushing, to become good at it takes some time and practice. Play with it and find what works for you and your airbrush. When you do find the combination you wont want to paint with anything else. BTW your first shot with an airbrush looks much better than mine did. YesYes
