Scorpiomikey

Very very nice build. Can you post a photo of it next to another smaller scale? (eg a 72nd spit if you have one) Just to show the difference in size.

Ok, just to show the difference in scale, here is the Sea Harrier 1/24 next to an F-16 in 1/48

Quite a size difference, huh!!?? Whistling

Ok, I'm calling the Sea Harrier done. This kit really did show it's age, not great fits on joining parts etc. Lots of flash, ejector marks etc. But it did spruce up ok with the Flightpath set (despite the not-so-clear-instructions included). I gave the plane a not so subtle oil wash, I wanted to show a bit of battle grime and the elements out on the aircraft carriers deck.

Cheers

Slow progress on the Harrier. getting all of the geeblies sorted slowly.

AIMs turned out well. I'm getting better at airbrushing gloss white but it's still a PITA! Did the tips in magnesium, makes a nice contrast. Next decaling for them;

Entering the home stretch on this build. Got the decaling done and started to attach the greeblies. A lot of those on this bird. I have almost finished the exhaust nozzles. Got the rear exhaust plates to Alclad in magnesium, I have painted the AIMs white and then they will get a gun metal tip. Then it will be time for weathering and shading.

Cheers

OMGZ, this thing IS a monster! Devil I have finished the painting, touched up with a good brush on the areas where it was hard to get in with the air brush. Nose and tan/black masking's done. Next a gloss coat in prep for the decals.

This bird is such a marathon to paint. Two hours and I've got the top done and half of the underside. I can't believe I ran out of paint, used up one and a half of Mr.Colour H333. Time to pay a trip to the LHS tomorrow.

Slowly getting towards painting. Canopy finally attached (the brass sure looks nice but is a total PITA to install on canopy plastic!!!!), cockpit masked off. Just some more greeblies to fit, also completed the vortex generator replacement in brass on the wings.

So the stage that I have been putting off for as long as I can is the canopy. As nice as the Flight path set is, the instructions leave a lot to be desired!

The front canopy section has a raised section just where it meets the front of the fuselage. The Flight Path set contains nice sill details with riveting. It however does not mention how to apply the new sill to the clear plastic part.

So I had a think about this and there is a secondary brass part that fits on top of the front of the sill. I thought that this simulates the 'bulge' in this section so I decide to saw off the front part of the canopy.

A disaster! A poor sawing job, the blade kept bouncing and making a new cut and finally the glass snapped in a very conspicuous place.

Lucky there are 2 front canopy parts in this kit. The second part seems to be a bit messier in its molding but Future should help with that. So I carefully scribed the cut outline first and made very slowly but slightly firmer strokes. A much better result.

PHEWW!!! Huh? A botched canopy can ruin a model. A test fit with the brass sill confirms that this will work just fine.

Also got the first external fuel tank done. Note the brass sway braces, they really help with the detail.

Some more work on the Harrier. Fusing the cockpit section onto the rest of the fuselage. This is being glued only on the starboard at the moment but it's necessary to temporarily tape and hold the port side so it makes a better match. There are many gaps in this kit already Super Angry

Haven't got much done this week. It has been a bit of a rough week here. One of our chihuahua's, Lychie, died this week. He was very old, 16 but much loved and will be truly missed.

Got some work done on the intake doors. This is tough work but the PE fits nicely and when painted should give a very realistic look to the plane.

Cheers

PS. My avatar will be changed to honor Lychie for the time being.

Here it goes. My most tedious project of the year.

I took it and just primed it the way it is. Most pieces either missing or have fallen off. I can see there is going to be a lot of scratchbuilding involved in this one.

So more on the Airfix puzzle. Flashing galore on this kit, also ejector pin marks on almost every piece! We get spoilt building Tamiya, Dragon, Eduard and Trumpeter kits a lot of the time!

I decided to finish the engine parts off in Alclad lacquers. The black undercoat helps with creating depth in the detail of the parts.

Some more work done on the cockpit. Far from finished, possibly the most detailed office I've ever worked on.

Front view;

Front view with coaming;

Rear view and starboard sidewall;

Nearly finished the ejection seat just waiting for the harnesses to dry.

Time to get out the mini saw.

Need to remove the cockpit. I think this kit was originally a GR.3. The instructions ask to hack this front section off and replace it with the FRS.1 version.

The tape help remove a clean area

Not quite a clean fit for the new piece but putty will help that

As you can see the cockpit on this kit is pretty sparse.

There are two not-very-fitting-at-well plastic bits for the side wall that I just threw away.

I cut off the window sills and replaced them with the FP brass offerings. As you can see on the port side, just a plastic ridge.

So while the Flightpath set spices up the IP and some of the side consoles considerably, it completely fails to add anything else to the cockpit. So scratch time. As always with my approach to scratch, I like to simulate not replicate. I tried to do something that looked good to the eye and not worry too much about what was really inside this pit for real.

It's amazing how much of this will be seen on the final kit. Airfix could have done a little more perhaps. But it's amazing what can be done with some left over PE, resin, styrene cockpit shapes and wire.

I've never seen so much brass! There are sheets and sheets of the stuff in this Flightpath set. Instructions could be a lot better though. Half of it is diagrams, the other half is written instructions. it's complicated stuff let alone having to visualise it yourself.

Anyways, here is the IP with brass pieces and some pieces for the side consoles.

Well, it's not everyday you have a 1/24 scale kit in the stash (or under the bed) so I decided to bump the 1/72 Super Sabre and start the Harrier now. This kit will be in 3 builds, Airfix, Harrier and Falklands.

A lot of pieces, a lot not on sprues and not very well organised or numbered. I'm going to have to work out a filing system to keep track of the pieces.

I'm also adding this Flightpath upgrade set which includes resin wheels and ordinance and heaps of photo etch and white metal parts for the cockpits and engine and ladder etc.

This kit is a gift pack and has supplied some small pots of Humbrol paints so first things first some cataloguing and converting into Tamiya and Gunze from my collection.

I think I'll have to fill up the tub for this one as well to bath the parts Big Smile

Hi everyone ;

 I apologies for my slow progress on my 1/72 Esci AV-8A project  . I was attempting that fancy YAV-8C paint scheme for my build however I have decided to use the Wolfpac decals sheet No.72-035 "Winter Camouflage" AV-8A Harrier ;

So far I have only managed a little interior painting on some of the sub assembly's ;

Wolfpac give the modeller quite a good history of each aircraft depicted with their decal sheets and they mention that this particular AV-8A was fitted with the Stencel SEU-3/A seat . I recently picked up the Pavla resin Stencel seat which has the overhead handle ;

Next I'll start  glueing the cockpit and fuselage halves together and continue on with some proper WIP pic's to follow soon .

John .

Hi guys,

I finally finished her.  Sorry that I didn't take any progress pics along the way.  It was too late to take any assembly pics and I was just too lazy to take pics of the painting process.  But jetmodeler was kind enough to let me participate anyway.

First, though, let me say that you guys have some nice builds.  I've enjoyed lurking in this GB.

This kit is the Monogram 1/48 AV-8B Harrier.  I built it OOB but I did add the beacon light, the VHF antenna, the gun muzzle and the nose gear light.

This kit, in my opinion, is great.  Overall I think it captures the shape of the AV-8B better than any other kit.  Its my second Monogram/Revell Harrier, in fact.

The only major fit issue is the part where the wing sits in the fuselage "saddle."  You just have to spend some time fitting it right and filling the seams above and below but its not too bad.  Also, for some reason the raised detail does not line up symmetrically on the fuselage halves.  The most notable offenders are the slime light boxes and the pitot tube guide marks.  They really need to be sanded/filled.  The instructions leave out some important decal placement as well.  Also, it can be a little difficult to get the plane to sit on all 5 wheels.  You have to take care to get that part right.

The canopy doesn't line up with the windscreen too well, either.  It doesn't look so good in the closed position.

I cut off the fuel tanks just because I think the lines of the plane show up better without them.  But I probably will add some better ordinance later.  I want to leave it OOB for now.

Anyway, enough talking.  Here she is.  Hope you enjoy it:

This is what I've been calling the "Fly-n-hi effect."  I paint on functional slimelights:

I picked up this kit at Modelzona 2011 for $6.  Here's the box art:

jetmodeler,

I grabbed a Monogram 1/48 AV-8B back in November at a model swap meet and started building it about 2 or 3 weeks ago.  It's about 80% done (it's already painted and I just gloss coated it tonight) but I didn't take any progress pics along the way.  If I had seen this GB earlier I would have taken some pics but its the same as TREYZX10R's Harrier so they'd be similar anyway.

Do you mind if I still join?

Alright, I'm calling my Sea Harrier 98% done. I didn't like how the Sidewinders turned out so I'm re-painting them. And as always after pics are taken, there are a couple of tiny little things that are bugging me, a little touch of paint here & there before moving into the display case....

The build went fine, just my thumb getting in the way. (And I'm happy with how the repair turned out too) The gray is a mix of Tamiya acrylics, pretty close to RLM 74 though. I wasn't going to get into FS#s and paint chips on this one, every colour photo from the Falklands era seemed to be different,

 Manstein's revenge:

1) How did you get the roundels to lay in the intakes--cut em?

I positioned them over the intakes, blotted the water out but didn't add any decal solvent. Let them dry an hour or so to make sure there wouldn't be any slipping around, then cut them & add the decal solvent.

 Manstein's revenge:

2) What happened that smudged the one in the pic?

ARGHHH! I already had the decals in place with a little (but obviously not enough) clear-coat overspray. Then I began adding those foolish blade antennas. Put a little drop of glue on the antenna, while in tweezers, then drop it into place. Simple right? Then one of the antennas popped out of the tweezers. I picked it up, put it back in the tweezers & dropped it into place.

However, when I picked it up I got a smudge of Tamiya Extra Thin on my thumb, then I put my thumb dead-center on the roundel as I picked up the model again. Smudge-a-palooza!! I had to do a little roundel roundup from the spares on that sheet to replace what I smudged!

Well, as much as I hate to admit it because of the sore spot concerning the wing, your build up to that point looked rather cherry. I really like this pic:

The ejection seat looks good for a 1/72 jet, but the Eduard cockpit sets would finish these up nicely.

The GR9 looks as nice I'm assuming? Too recent for me though, too gray. (I know, I just finished a dark sea gray Sea Harrier!!!) I'd like to pick up a Harrier GR3 & slap some winter ambush camo on it...

...very nice kits.  I also got the Eduard pre-colored cockpit zoom for 'em...very nice.

BUT, I think I found the solution sitting in the same box, combining roundel decals from the two other options seems to measure out at the right sizes. I'll try it on a blank piece of styrene first just to make sure, but this is the plan:

Hey, is that one of those new-tool Airfix Harriers?  I just bought two and they look cherry in the box...

Manny, what are you doing in here, these things were all built after the RLM went out of business!!! Yes, that's the new-tool Airfix kit. The panel lines are a little too wide for my taste but overall it's a very good kit. I bought it for the Falklands option, but the other two decal options provided are making me think I need some more Harriers in my life. (All, I should have my finished pics up before the weekend!)

GR3 updates.

Consulting some reference on internet, the italeri kit miss some piece from the falkland operative harriers,

mainly a sensor cover on the nose with an antenna, and chaffs dispenser rear the airbrake, both resolved, but the front fuselage really have a baaaad fitting, lots of putty needed to resolve and also a plastic piece to resolve a step under the cockpit between the two semi-fuselage pieces. And another inaccuracy (not only from falkland units) . The front gear have a too large little well door, when the gear is out the space opened is just the middle than on the kit . Iresolved with a plastic piece on the back of the gear and reduced the rear hole.

the pictures

the step and the gear correction

after sanding and added the nose sensor cover

lots of putty

the chaff dispensers

also started to engrave more the panel lines, they are perfect for the airbrush but with brushes i risk to cover all the lines Sad

a last shot before to paint it with 144 that will go even as primer

that's all folks (Whistling) !

Today i'm feeling better withouth the B clown Whistling

Updates from the gr3

i washed the cockpit.

On the ip tried something differents , i read here (don't remember the post) someone used gloss coat as glue for little pices, then searchin a good way to simulate instruments glass i proceded so:

after scratched the ip details on the black background i painted it with clear gloss and put on the upper part of ip Propeller

Also added and drybrushed the rudder pedals (scratched too)

Also added the ejection handle on the seat (a metal wire)

then i drilled the lateral camera "eye", and put from the inner side a piece of heated clear sprue ,removed the IR sensor on the nose to put something after .

and painted the inner nose with flat black .

then all main parts are glued!

the fit is not perfect here Sad

that's all for now Headphones

the cockpit

hope the weathering/washes will resolve the christmas aspect, that's all for today

I airbrushed the windscreen frames at the same time as the airframe, they just need to be attached. I should be alright. (But I usually do attach glass first, paint after.)

pucara sounds good Stick out tongue

the danger about to put the windscreen after to finish all is a possible differences between the frames and aircraft surfaces.

Windscreen - I'm not really sure to be honest! I was thinking I should keep it off until after the last mist-coat over the new decal... but I really should mask the cockpit (or the windscreen) before doing that anyway... I should have this wrapped up on the weekend though.

Then, on to the Pucara!

Magnific harrier stash Helo Yes what's the best 1/72 shaped kit between this stash by your opinion?

The av-8 prototype is really intresting as subject

Vance nice progress and saves there. Why you don't glued the windscreen before the pitot?

Vance I hope the fix works out that is a great looking build. Pitot tube looks great as well

John Wow now thats a stash!!!

HAH - the pitot tube! That was a "necessity is the mother of invention: moments. The shape on the kit-suuplied part looked fine, but I snapped the bloody thing as I was trying to sand off a pour-stub attachment point. A scrap of plastic, brass rod & CA to the rescue!

Took off the mangled decal by sanding and "flaking" it off with a sharp exacto blade. The portions that made their way inside the intakes were left alone, I just figured I was asking for trouble if I played with thhat area too much. Added a brush-coat of Future & left to dry a few days.

A Harrier with blue+white roundel... interesting look!

And the smaller red+blue roundel fit inside the white area perfectly, just a little touch of overlap.

A little MicroSol and slicing helped it settle into place, again. I'll give it a light overspray this weekend. The exhaust nozzles have since been painted a burnt-metal.

Hi everyone ;

I've been watching from the side lines all the great work you guy's are doing with your Harrier builds ,

Awesome stuff...Toast

I dropped out of a lot of Group Builds earlier in the year because of time and family issues , however it's really tempting to want to join in with everyone else .

I have a few 1/72 Harrier's in the stash and I've built two about three years ago , so perhaps it's time for another . Here's a pic of the stash ;

The easiest way would be to build one straight out of the box , however I alway's seem to want to do things the hard way and after looking through Squadrons Harrier in action book , I saw this pic of an YAV-8C ...

According to the caption it appears to be a AV-8A Harrier with what looks to be some additional strakes under the gun pods ?

So I was thinking of using one of my Esci AV-8A kits as they have the correct shaped horizontal stabilizers ;

Anyway , I kindly ask if I may join in with everyone else , if my first idea doesn't work out , I can always just build one OOB .

                          John .

Alright, my replacement "decal sandwich" seems to have worked. I applied the white + blue roundel two nights ago, let it sit & applied the smaller blue & red roundel over it last night. I'm sure you could see it close-up, but after I give it a quick spray of the gray filter, only I will ever know. (Well, and you guys too I suppose!) Pics with next update.

BUT, I think I found the solution sitting in the same box, combining roundel decals from the two other options seems to measure out at the right sizes. I'll try it on a blank piece of styrene first just to make sure, but this is the plan:

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In the home stretch on the Sea Harrier. Landing gear getting painted up, decided to add some of the blade antennas last night. Added glue to one of the ones behind the cockpit, started to move it into place & dropped it on the painted surface. No problem, I grab it quickly with fingers, put it back into the tweezers, pick up the plane & carry on.

Then I realize that...

  • I had a little smudge of glue on my thumb
  • my thumb happened to fall exactly where the RN decided the roundel should be placed
  • perhaps my flat coat wasn't thick enough
  • Airfix decals MELT when touched by Tamiya liquid cement
  • my red + blue smudgy thumbprint looks nothing like a RN roundel

With no spare roundels that match up (small, red+blue only), I'm thinking of gently sanding out the worst of the smudge, then just overpainting the base-colour gray. Thoughts?

Thats probably what I would do. For the roundel you could mask and paint the colors for it.

Just an idea.Idea

Ahhhh - this is where my brain cramps up from lack of modern jets. (That's my excuse anyway!!) I'm using Tamiya acrylics in the airbrush, wanted to have some parts in place before spraying to avoid tricky touchups. I mounted the outboard weapons pylons & then sprayed.... then last night realized that the pylons sit over top of the underside roundels!! Bang Head I guess I'll have to do some decal slicing!

Casper the Chihuahua

I got my Flightpath Sea Harrier FRS1 upgrade set in the post today. Very nice!

5 sheets of beautifully detailed brass PE, some lovely resin wheels and AIM Sidewinder missiles, film for the IP and 3 bags of cast white metal. A lot of the ejector seat and landing gear is to replaced with this.

This drool-worthy stuff! Yes

OK, with all that detail work he does, I'm starting to think bsyamato is actually working in 1/48 and has abnormally large fingers!!! Wink Looking good again buddy. I made some progress over the weekend, mixed & sprayed my first coat of overall gray on the Harrier. (I had some RLM grau-violett already mixed, I started with that as a base. If I don't like the final look of the colour I'll have to do a tint-wash afterwards to dirty it up some.)  Pics later,

EDIT!! pics etc up now! The cockpit, oob, including the decals for instrument panel & side consoles. The pics make my highlight on the buckles look REALLy bright, not like that in person. And not much of this will be visible once she's all sealed up anyway.

Underside looked fine except for a couple of sinkholes (the glob of putty near the nose gear!), and a gap at the wingroot, apparently I trimmed too much when making that fit. A little CA & nobody will ever see it anyway I suppose.

Topside - the wing-to-fuselage joint has one "up-step" and one "down-step", making me think some pilot error is at work here.Embarrassed

Nose-cone? Does anyone here know for sure... is the nose-cone supposed to have the same profile all-around? Mine looks like it is flatter on one side than the other...

The exhaust nozzles - nicely moulded, but the 2 halves join right in the middle of the fins. I ended up running a little CA over top of the fins, then a rather thick coat of black paint. Not perfect, but it'll do. (Aden guns installed here already, I drilled out the muzzles. Some things I'm going out of order on...)

My little Japanese friend was doing pics with some IJN and IJA aircraft, he stuck around to pose with the Sea Harrier...

Back on harrier finally, working on the cockpit and ip between 1:20 - 3:00 am Dead

I'm not sure did the right choice to glue the cockpit panels before to finish it but i did so:

reinforcement was needed, on the left consolle i glued the base for throttles

the most complicated thing was to drill all instruments holes without break the tiny ip sheet, successfully put on only a frame for one of left instrument

after take the picture above i clean the holes, man the ip are really little Tongue Tied

Now the more hard thing to do is to fix all in right mode ;need to scratch the rear bulkheads of the cockpit.

soon more updates (i hope)

These Decals sucked! I sprayed them with decal bond good thing too as  that was the only thing that made them useable. They are thick as phone books and took repeated applications of  micro sol to lay down and rid the silvering. I should've bought aftermarket ,oh well they're on now.

Why is it that yellow and white always give me a hard time ? Anybody else have trouble with these colors?

~TREYZX10R~ Looking good so far. The project that I'm repainting for my step-dad is the old Monogram kit. He even used the same markings.
Yellow likes to give me the most trouble. White gives me trouble but not as much as the yellow.

Why can't all colors just cover like grey paint does.Smile Dots

TREYZX10R this is vertical take of Big Smile nce cockpit painting

White for me is the enemy number one for modellers Super Angry

just finished five layer on my super etendard (falkland gb as the harrier i'll post here) and seems again not so good Bang Head yellow are more human but need a underlayer of light gray or... white to work better.

so.. here's my harrier gr3, previous wip resume

the kit is the old good Esci harrier, with some improving by italeri. panels are fortunately engraved.

Cockpit will be scratched, on my magazine fortunately i had an old aeroclub martin baker for this plane.

Nozzles will be totally drilled and improved

By the kit main gear will be glued before to close fuselage, then i glued some plastic piece to allow gear glued after finishing all.

worded even on secondary intakes

and main parts glued

the cockpit work till now

that's all, now i can continue on it

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/xx4/fyreater637/models040.jpg:550:0]Here is my submission. AMT AV-8B Harrier II. I will be doing it in the older tricolor Marine Paint scheme.

The first project I'm doing is a "revisited project". My step dad built the kit about 20 yrs ago or so and he wanted me to repaint it for him.

It was painted in that scheme before I stripped the paint. I believe the markings were VMA-331.

(Starts tomorrow)Smile

I would like to get in on this as a cross over from the Falklands GB, where I am building a 1/48 Tamiya RN Sea Harrier FRS1.

Cheers,

Michael

Please count me in. Not sure which Harrier I will pull out of the stash I have about 4 in there. I will let you know in a few days. Right now I am leaning toward Esci/Ertl AV-8B witht the older Marine Green/Grey scheme. I have a few other builds to wrap up so may be a bit before any WIP are posted.

Thanks,

Travis/STFD637

...You have to build a Harrier.Stick out tongue Cross overs are allowed. ..

I like the rules so far!!! I'm in with an Airfix 1/72 Sea Harrier, crossing over with the Falklands GB that is underway.

As far as "my first group build, am I missing anything" goes - hey, it's your group build & can be as simple as you like. I guess the only other "rule" is for builders to share pics & info as they go, the "group" portion of the group build! I've painted a few cockpit pieces but will put the rest on pause until your start date.

On the bench: Airfix 1/72 Wildcat; Airfix 1/72 Vampire T11; Airfix 1/72 Fouga Magister
