I hope Big-Z doesn't mind if I butt in here but this is what I use and I think he's refering to the same thing.

Prismacolor Pencils

I'm not totally sure which type mine are- the Softcore I think though. I picked mine up at Michael's - I'm sure most art stores should stock them. I've used them for small areas like paint chipped off a prop but never to the extent that Carlos has here. I like them, they are very easy to control since it's well just like using a pencil.

My local Michael's has a big rack with probably over a hundred or so different colours.

Here's where I am so far....and yes....its a Prismacolor PC 949...I have a box set....from way back when....when we used to render by hand....I might be a Giant Radioactive Lizard by night.....but by day I am an architect.....but I did get a couple of new pencils at Michaels.....they sell them indivdual.....

last night glued the mary wings pieces and the propeller parts, nothing great, the wings needs lots of cures. Also glued the cockpit floor. No pictures founded about the real cockpit so i think will go to place some reasonable details taking inspiration by other jap bombers

Will post some pictures when some intresting update is done

Big-Z: That looks great! Looking forward to seeing how she turns out. I'm going to have to pull out an old model and experiment with the pencil some.

BTW: Sharpie makes a silver felt-tip marker that I've used for cockpit detailing, chips, and scratches as well.

Bsyamato: Yes, suppose I should have been more specific. A guy in a mini-skirt uniform like that evokes a different reaction  

Looking forward to the photos. I've had the same problem- sometimes you just have to make something up.

Happy to say the Tamiya 1/48th Zero is almost ready for decaling! If I don't mess anything up I'll get the gloss clear coat on tonight- if all goes well photos this weekend.

I have used a silver sharpie too.....but the point is too thick....tougher to control....but it does work well picking up cockpit details...

thanks guys  for the info on the pencils. i never knew that there was a soft core version. im definately gonna pick one up. the results are too good not to use one

Yeah, I don't use the Sharpie as much either for the same reasons. Thought I'd point it out in case someone else of the forum might find it useful.

let me know what you think-oh BTW-Hasagewa decals hate solvaset.i couldnt get the wrinkles out, so i distressed them to show wear.

Looks good so far.....I would add a few more "chips" around the edge of the cockpit and some on the canopy frames.....otherwise....ok

ok i put more chipping near the cockpit sill and ariound the "glass". unfortunatly it didnt show up in my pics. but here it is and im done-thanks gamera for a great GB

Some great work going on here.  I'm pretty close to done with the Zero.  I tried a new technique with her.  After priming I sprayed the entire a/c with Testor Aluminum.  Then I lightly sprayed on the Tamiya JN Green, being sure to leave some of the undercoat showing through.  Then I used some very fine sandpaper and sanding sticks to sand away some of the green revealing the aluminum.  Now it's glossed for decals.  What do you guys think?

SAR: Looks pretty fine to me! I think the chipping both intentional and accidental worked out really well. If you have time you're more than welcome to do another.

Really like all this chipping and denting. As an ace's mount I figured my Zero would be well-maintained and didn't do much weathering at all. I may end up copying Big-Z and putting a few dings in with the silver pencil.

sar, the George looks primo!   I really like the way the well-worn weathering turned out.

I use that same silver pencil also.  Used it on the cockpit of my Ki-46-III I posted earlier.  Much easier than the little brush I use to use for the cockpit and lines.   However, yesterday went with the wifey to Walmart and picked up a couple of fine point silver sharpies.  Walmarts art section is where I got all of the pencils and other stuff for the models.  The pencil is pretty soft lead and crumbles easily too.

Now I just have to keep them hid from the grandkids!

I was going for more worn through than chipped.  Tried something new and outside of the box.  I'll keep perfecting the technique.

Ive done that before too....you can say its another way to skin the cat...(Le Meouw)..I did my Rufe that way some time ago.....I painted a base of grey-green first then wiped away the green top coat...its a slow process but good results....

That's exactly what I was going for.  I guess I need a little practice on the execution.  Nice job.

2011 is officially closed out.  Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you the Tamiya 1/48th A5M5c of CPO Takeo Tanimizu, 203rd AG, 303rd Sq, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, June 1945.

Build was the old Tamiya kit from 1983, OOB except for Master Model guns and pitot tube.  Colors are Tamiya IJN Green and IJN Gray, the cowl is Vallejo black with some Sea Blue and Intermediate Blue added.  The aluminum undercoat is MM Aluminum.   Tamiya Yellow on the leading edge. 

The kit decals worked pretty well.  They laid down nicely with Micro Set and Micro Sol.  I used a green wash to tone down the aluminum to green transition.  Some chipping on the engine cowl.

I joined this GB on a whim because I needed something easy to do while I was working on two frustrating projects.  I had a few Japanese kits in the stash and grabbed it.  It has started a renewed interest in the Pacific Theater and Japanese subjects.  It led me to a terrific book, Downfall: The End of the Japanese Empire. 

Thanks for hosting and looking.  There is some truly amazing work here.

Duh, forgot to add the pictures!

Satch: For something you started on a whim she turned out a beauty! Great build and the worn paint looks really convincing. Only nitpick I have is that in the second to last photo the landing gear looks a little crooked, it may just be the angle of the photo though. If it is off it should be pretty easy to fix and in no way detracts from the beautiful model you have here.

Great to have you and if you should decide to do another you're more than welcome!

cannot speak nothing about the colors!!!!!! my lcd is gone and returned with old fu*** spent crt moniton on my house computer... this will be great problem for reference colors on workbench.

Big G...I built this one about year and a half ago....It was an experiment in two techniques.....one the worn down weathering.....and two...playing with fiber optics...and yes..I'm proud of my floatie thingies...

Big-Z: Very cool! Love those lights! When I get more time I'll be going through the War in the Pacific GB for your Seiran and Rufe.
