 DoogsATX:

Thanks guys - the George has been a fun kit! Lots of new techniques to refine coming out of it, too. Hard to believe I'm brining it in in right around one month! Definitely whet my appetite for more Japanese aircraft in the future!

Finals to come later tonight once the last bits are done...

Once you start it is hard to stop. They had such different looking craft and lots of variants...and the mainstream manufactures make lots of them too.

Ancients call japanese planes "japaningles" Whistling last night i bring the tenzan in the kitchen and was really hard to not pop start it too Angel

Doogs the George looks even more better Yes

updates on both planes:

On the Claude scratched the pilot seat adn added last details (ok need to add again the throttles Embarrassed will add after the black instruments paint). The bulkhead modified to fit better in the fuselage

and after the first green

drilled also the holes for the shells. The IP was painted too.

The Mary tail insigna mask

all masks off, drybrush on the under grey, and first and second gloss coat. A side note; used the new humbrol gloss coat in the glass bottle, had lots of problem about the thinner normally i use with humbrol colors Tongue Tied i hope this will not give problems after the model is finished.

and now drying time

that's all Toast

Calling the George DONE!

All in all, great little kit, especially at the $18 I got it for off Sprue Brothers. I'd recommend this as a great entry into Japanese aircraft, and worlds ahead of the Tamiya Frank I managed to botch in terms of detail, engineering and fit.

Thanks for having me in this GB, Gamera - if it were running longer or I didn't already have such a full slate coming up, I'd definitely be down for a second build!

Doogs: As usual great job! Bow Down I really like how the weathering has nicely toned the chipping down to blend smoothly with the paint.

The GB is running to Sept. so if you should get any time off from that giant 1/32 B-25 feel free to jump back in!

Bsyamato: Nice work on the cockpit of Claude and Mary just looks better and better!

So I started weathering my Val a bit, just some minor chipping, using a sponge.  I feel like I ruined the model, it just doesn't look right.  Any suggestions, or does it look ok?  I am not familiar with aircraft weathering.  I don't want to get to involved with it, like the salt technique.

Also, quick question, when I do the oil wash on the panel lines, for the dark green, should I go with a lighter wash? or should i stick with raw umber on all panel lines.

David....I did the same thing on my Betty...started with a makeup sponge torn in half and looked decent...until I went too far. I just painted over the silver paint blotches last night and recoated with Future. Looking at your Val, it doesn`t look bad to me. you didn`t go overboard...leading edges look good to me.You prolly don`t like what you did by the cockpit?  Just , very carefully, airbrush right over it. After a clear coat, it should all blend in again. You didn`t ruin the model, take your time and you`ll get it back to pre-weathering condition. I got my Betty back to that state and now, I`ll try a streaking technique that I just picked up from another forum member. Good luck David,

Len

David, I wouldn't say you "ruined" the finish but first off, I was led to believe that PH a/c were not heavily weathered.  Weathering is an art all its self and I'm no expert at it.  You are attempting the what I call "add to" method (e.g.., chrome silver paint highlights, or using Prismacolor silver pencil) vs what Doogs did which is what I call the "take away" method (e.g., NMF base then subtle (or not so) removal of top coat with salt or other).  I must say the later method seems to get better results but looks like greater work. In your case of the add to method, I always liked the effect of chipping near panel lines or obvious wear areas such as pilot step pattern or ground crew work areas (gun/ammo, fuel etc.)  Keep after it, as stated above the leading edges look good, you've done a great job thus far!

You can go lighter, lots of guys do. I use black or raw umber, more realistic to my eyes. The lighter shade really makes the panel lines pop out and if thats what you`re looking for, go for it. I like the black and umber washes because it looks more like dirt and grime to me. Just my 2 cents

Davi i used light or medium grey to panel line the zero green, a yellow base color could work too, even black can work, but also dependings on your taste Wink

More mary/claude pictures

Mary decals on!! and last glossy layer before panel washing. The fuselage hinomaru stolen fro one of two tenzan sets (tenzan kit included two complete decals sheets for different versions Stick out tongue)

On the Claude i'm near to close fuselage, hope tomorrow

Doog: you have a high bar and I think George makes it. Good work indeed.

bsyamato: You're building one homely plane, but the build looks really sweet so far. I'm very interested in seeing it in completion. I've brought a Hasegawa A6M5 to St. Paul with me and am going to be bookmarking green/gray IJN aircraft for seriously needed inspiration.

Dave: to be honest, I think you might be between two stools with the Val. If you're thinking a Pearl Harbor Val it is, as Reasoned suggested it is probably over weathered. That said, Vals saw heavy work throughout the Solomons campaign when land-based at Rabaul or Bougainville and some of those could have been very heavily weathered. I think you've got the leading edges just about right. In my humble, if I was going to go for a heavy weather approach, I'd weather it more. If not, do some respraying and step back a little as suggested by another wise head here. If you're going to do Pacific War aircraft I don't you can avoid fading. Salt faded paint and when the war got rolling those planes were over salt water or exposed to it 24X7. (Almost all landing strips were close to water.) If you don't want to mess with salt, I'd give oil paint dot fading a try - it's extremely effective when you get the hang of it. MIG also makes "faded" pigments in a variety of colors and those would work too. Again, in my humble, WWII combat aircraft are usually underweathered across the board. That said, weathering is a completely individual decision. Every weapon was new sometime and aircraft were "recycled" at an extraordinary rate during the war. So a mint warplane would be perfectly accurate. A lot of ship modelers do "commission day" models - I think they just don't want to get their pretty boats dirty. (Actually I've got a Hasegawa Mikasa at home and plan a "commission day" build for it simply to see if I could handle a clean finish.)

Panel lines: not sure if this is common knowledge but Tamiya has just put out a line of panel line enamels in the same bottles they use for cement. They have some kind of conditioner in them. I just used them for a pinwash on an AFV and they are very good. Come in black, brown and gray - I mixed the black and brown. I'm still not sure how to handle minor panel lines - I think there's a real possibility they are often overdone. There are some warbirds in the Twin Cities and I'm going to go out and stare at them for a while.

ric

Sad was sweet!! think ruined it with panel lines washing, the green i use was seriously old and bad, i had the impression that he not really cured and this impression was correct... fortunately decals and marking are ok.

Some upper parts going off but fortunately i did 3 layers of it. Will correct mistakes after the matt coat , at least try.

Claude main pieces all glued, will post pictures later ..

David: Maybe a little too much chipping on the leading edges but otherwise she looks good to me. I think one of the biggest reasons I've never done much chipping is when I do I never like the looks of the results either. Still, I think she looks fine.

I've seen very nicely done light washes at shows but again that's something I've never had much luck with. I generally go with a dark wash assuming as it's been said it's dirt and grime sticking to the seams between the panels.

Bsyamato: ACK! I hope you didn't ruin her, she was looking so good before. Good luck with saving her.

The updates on the Claude Big Smile (pss.. i started to redraw the tenzan panels yesterday and cut the original cockpit floorWhisper )

cockpit complete

glued all!!

I redraw almost all the panel lines to engrave more, did to avoid lost panels after paint

and after first black layer to allow a silver or aluminium drybrush (this was the method i used on the little mavis Surprise )

Cliff this is the actual mary situation Sad from pictures it's hard to see so i try a close up on wings

will leave at least 3 or 4 days with the hope the color will totally cure, actually even an high humidity in the air here Bang Head after this will matt the plane Lightning

modeler#1 personally i used a mix with few drops of green ,blue and most percentage of gloss clear cote. painting the wells with nmf before.

heres a good shot of a real zero

zerowell

that's all for the night Alien
