I haven't started the Yamato (was going to get PE but decided against) but the zero was finshed a couple mmonths ago sorry.  I will look for some more Japanese kits. Also how to get badges and show them as this is my first GB.

Sounds good! If you can't finish the Yamato in time no big deal - I'd still like to see how the kit goes together. Let me know what else you come up with, I'm sure we can work something out.

Badges are on the first page, I'm sure someone else can probably explain badges in you sig line better than me though.

Can any one explain how to put pictures in the forum i am starting the YAMATO.  The pictures wont paste on to the page.

I am taking as much care as possible on this kit.  The name stand is going to be semi gloss black with gold lettering this is all i have been able to do so far. The stand alone is six inches long.  The kit has thirteen sprues of partsSurprise and  three non sprueable items (the decks and hull).

Is there a tool that can be used to the same effect as a pin vise the yamato has no hole in the hull for the rudder.

How `bout a small drill or Dremel-type tool. In a pinch I`ve used vise-grip pliers to hold a drill bit. If the bit you`re using is sharp you prolly could get away with just twisting the bit with your fingers while exerting a little pressure.

Any AC Moore`s or Michael`s craft stores has them in the woodworking section. Any pinvise is a "good one" if it holds a mini drill bit...Wink Can I ask you what your age is?

Frightful: I was going to tell you Doogs has a really good link on how to post photos but looks like you figured it out though so no matter Wink

Super job on the Yamato, dang I want one of those kits but don't have anywhere to put her so I'm enjoying watching you work on yours.

On the drill I agree with Len, they should work pretty well if you're not drilling a great many holes.

Only two holes for the rudders.  I did it with a pumpkin carving hole puncher and a cheap knife.

Also what does everyone think of the hull red? Is it accurate to the Yamato?

Great, whatever does the job! Idea

Not sure, the red looks a little dark to me but I'm not sure. If it's what Tamiya says to use it should be right.

Dull red? Hmmmm, I'd think Hull Red should be close. I've got a couple of bottles of brush on Tamiya hull red and it looks like the colour of the hull from paintings.

It's XF-9 on the Tamiya website.

What you have looks pretty close to me, maybe the hull red is a little more reddish.

Frightful: Coming along great so far Yes

BTW: If you haven't seen it yet you might look at Surfsup's build of the IJN Takao for how he painted his model.

Hey I am not going to post alot of pics for a little while.  Painting hundreds of pieces a tenth the size of a dime by hand is tiring so i am ordering an airbrush.

Bsyamato: Very nice work there! Love the bright red.

Frightful: Great, I don't know how I got along without an airbrush. To be honest sometimes I'd like to toss the thing across the room but still there's nothing better than applying a nice even coat of paint over large areas.

Several hundred pieces and it gets montonus,  and the main deck with the gray. Lots of painting.

Tamiya A6M2 Zero complete (sort of)
Posted by stoutfella on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 8:30 AM

Greetings,

Here are some shots of my just-completed (sort of) Tamiya A6M2 Zero. I say sort of complete because during construction I managed to lose or break three of the four tiny little aileron counterweights. And moments after I started taking photos of the plane, I snapped off the antenna mast. So I'm debating whether to contact Tamiya for replacement parts and undertake repairs, or just chalk it up to experience and move on.

Sorry, no in-progress pics. I started this kit in March, but didn't realize there was a group build until I was fairly far along. I'll do better next time.

This was my third build after returning to the hobby after some 35 years, and my first Tamiya aircraft kit. I was very much looking forward to it after seeing so many great reviews of Tamiya kits. For the most part, it was an enjoyable build, with most of my problems self-inflicted (see above). The fit was mostly pretty good, with just a little filler needed on the wing roots. I didn't care much for the engine cowling being two pieces, though. And even though the top of the cowling appeared to line up OK with the top of the fuselage, it wasn't until it was secured in place that I realized the underside engine scoop was misaligned, with the position of the scoop being dependent on the locating pin on the cowling. I chose to just live with it rather than tear everything apart. I also found it hard to get the landing gear aligned evenly. The legs didn't fit into the holes very precisely so I was left to eyeball them and hope until the glue set.

I chose to finish the plane as one of the Pearl Harbor birds from the Akagi, using the kit decals (more about those in a moment). I used Tamiya IJN gray overall and painted the fuselage and tail bands in MM insignia red and yellow. I used Polly Scale engine black for the cowling and landing gear. I mixed Polly light blue with a few drops of dark green for the cockpit color. I mixed MM clear blue and clear green and applied it over aluminum for the aotake on wheel wells and landing gear doors.

I sprayed MM acrylic gloss before decaling. This was also my first experience with Tamiya decals and was hesitant after reading so many negative comments about them. Well, add my voice to that list. These things seemed thick as playing cards and never fully settled in even with multiple applications of Solvaset. I was just glad there weren't many decals to apply and that I had painted the red and yellow bands instead of using the decals. To top it off, after spraying MM acrylic flat (which I've had no previous trouble with), all of the hinomarus developed a streaky, whitish residue. After finding online accounts of similar problems, I sprayed the bird with a couple of light coats of Testors rattle can Dullcoat lacquer. Thankfully, the residue disappeared.

I pin-washed the panel lines with thinned raw umber artist oil, using the same mix for some light streaking. I didn't try for a lot of weathering, figuring these early-war planes hadn't racked up much hard living yet.

After being away from the hobby for so long, I'm still learning and catching up with each build, and this one was certainly instructive. My next project is Tamiya's P-51D, and I'm tremendously impressed with it after a little test fitting. I'm going to attempt an NMF finish, which may be too ambitious for my skills at this point, but hey, I'll give it a shot.

Cheers,

Stoutfella

Very nice work there Stoutfella, esp for your third kit after your return to the hobby Yes Pity about the small parts breaking off, I've been there, done that, got the T-shirt.

Not sure what the white residue on the decals was, maybe excess glue? Glad to see it cleared up with the extra clear coat. I've gotten into a habit of replacing kit decals with aftermarket whenever possible, a little more expensive but generally worth the headache. Crazy how Tamiya and Hasegawa make some of the best kits but include some of the worst decals.

Since we're running a pretty informal GB here I'll post your model when I get a chance. And you're always welcome to do another if you'd like. Again, beautiful model and a big congrads!!!

PS: Vetteman's Natural Metal GB IV is kicking off pretty soon, I'm sure he'd love to have your P-51 if you'd like to enter another GB.
