The paint looks pretty close to me in the photos. Considering the different shades used plus weathering and sun fading I've gotten to the point that I'm not too terribly anal about an exact match.

I don't know when it came out but the pot says "JN Grey  XF-12"

If it is to green I will just say it is moss growing on the plane from all the rain LOL!

More progress on my Frank. Tamiya Cockpit Green (which looks extremely close to RAF interior gray green) airbrushed to all areas of the fuselage that will be visible  thru the cockpit opening

And then Gunze Aotake airbrushed on the wheel wells, interior sides of the landing gear doors, and the inner surfaces of the engine cowling

Next up is washes and detail painting...

The grey does look a little strange in the pix, the sun was very bright when I took the pix. It is actually Tamiya IJN Grey straight from the pot and is a little greyer than green  LOL!

Theuns, your Dinah looks real good!Yes That is an unusual shade of green gray on her to my eye.Hmm

Well I was able to get back on the workbench today and get some airbrushing in. I airbrushed on a primer coat of Tamiya surface primer thinned with generic lacquer thinner on all cockpit area. Boy that stuff is no joke-quite an odor and it sticks to everything! Great for priming PE!

and I airbrushed on a base coat of MM Acrylic Steel on the engine face

I am planning on getting cockpit and engine interior base colors down tomorrow.

I must admit that I cheated a bit on the "free hand" canopy painting. After thinking I would in all likelyhood mess it up I masked each canopy frame individually and brush-painted them, except for a few small pieces on the front windshield.

It was a fun build and I am glad I didn't get the all glazed Dinah, that would have been tough!

That looks really good Theuns, almost enough to make me pull out my Dinah. Your freehand canopy frames look pretty good.

Cheers

Tony

Hmm, don't think I've ever used Arii/Otaki decals. I've always replaced the decals when on the kits I built. Good luck with them, after the decals silvered on the zero I'm working on I set her aside and gee it's been months - really, really need to finish her. Just don't want to go back and repaint over the decals...

Just call me Mr. Chipps LOL!

I have put the final dullcoat on, but the decals were very thick and did not seat nicely, even several applications of micro sol did nothing to better the situation. :-(

Here is the Dinah with a little chipping and painted using Tamiya IJN Grey Acrylic over tamiya silver enamel.

I will have to paint the canopy framing freehand as I could just not see it well enough to cut through the masking.

Theuns: Looks great! I've always been a little leery of those big transparent pieces like that but it looks good from here.

Glad that the photos were of use. I'd say a little chipping at the wing root would look good. Maybe a little around the canopy, the gear doors, and the cowling. Most of the aircraft I believe were based in the home islands and got a great deal of maintenance attention. I think the planes that got really beat up were the ones based out of small airfields in China and various islands.

Those pix were just saved to my hard drive, thanx a stack mate! That clears up the questions I had.

The kit supplies decals for both the all grey and the green/grey planes. I did a Hasa 1/48 A6m2 in Tamiya IJN grey Acryilc, and it worked very well indeed.

I was wondering if I should do a bit of salt chipping on the left wing-root as it would seem a likely place due to being a walkway, but then I am not sure how hard these Dinah's were worked and if they were as weathered as on other IJA/N aircraft.

Maybe it will detract from the nice looks of the plane.....then again it might also make it look less "toy like"

Dang! what to do... what to do LOL!

I have painted the interior side of the center section glass green and glued it on, fits like a glove!Cowls are on and most sanding should be completed today.

Theuns: Whoops! Sorry I was wrong! I found some photos here of a Dinah in overall Army underside grey. And yes the Imperial Navy did operate a small number of Ki-46s.

There was some difference in the paint used by one company to another, IE Mitsubishi underside army grey was slightly different from Nakajima underside army grey. Still if you use the paint marked as Imperial Army green and grey you should be pretty close.

And BTW, seems the forward and aft cockpits opened from the left, folding up to the right much like a fighter:

Stikpusher: Nice!!! Yeah, I've got one of those in my spare parts bin I build about twenty years ago! Good kit and I love what you've done with the photoetch- way to make a good but spartan kit even better.

Thanks. Aside from what I am doing in the cockpit here and a few other PE adds, this is gonna be mostly OOB. Yeah any Japanese aircraft fan should have this kit in their stash, I think that I paid around $15 max... very affordable, and a good basic kit, like their A6M2.
