Chazzer: Great lookin' Matilda! And kudos on getting her built in such crazy working conditions. Hope you're feeling better now.

Ernest: Very nice, not much more to go at all. The camo looks great. BTW- do you generally do your treads that way? I tend to do an upper run and a lower one and then glue them together when I put them on the model.

Dang Ernest. You're flying through your build. I like the choice of decals to add some pop. Mufflers look swell too.

Scott - Nice Matilda!  Even though its an oldie the Tamiya kit still holds up well and you did it justice!  Looks like we'll have the Brits well represented in this GB!

I tried REAL hard to get this done today, but I ran out of time.  Here's where the A13 stands:

Decals and flat coat applied, gave it a couple coats of green filter (didn't like the "tan" look of the original paint job), muffler painted.  In the process I broke off the antenna parts and the front sighting vane (I knew I'd break something!! Bang Head)

Tracks done and ready to install

Close up of the little buggers!

Wheels and outer fender shields done, just need to apply a pin wash, paint a couple of exterior details and then dust it up.  Maybe it will be done tomorrow?

I'm glad that I still have a chance to get the badge, I has been very busy with work and haven't the time for finish my munitionsschlepper I, or follow the group.

I´m almost done but I has to cut some extra detailing to build faster,  tomorrow I'll upload some photos, I think that I can finish it in the weekend.

Really a superb experience, I has never seen so many good modellers together.

Nice to hear it and it's not even that far from the deadline. Just a couple of days.

Chazzer, I might have a GB with your name on it. Wink
Go to the first page and copy the badge (right click on it) and paste it into your sig line in your profile.

Eric, I'm calling this one done......for now. As time goes on I might "dig this one out" in the future for some technique that I learned or improved on.. For now, done. I agree on the caunter scheme. The early Matilda's had a camo scheme like I tried to represent. It is a dark green/khaki green combo. I used Polyscale for the dark green and Vallejo for the khaki green. I had to freehand the Khaki in the hospital. I want to post those picts when they are sent to me. In my research I ran into some impressive models (not pin-ups,LOL) with the caunter scheme. Man they looked great. I have the second Matilda now in my stash. When I'm better skilled I want to really represent an early Matilda from the Blitz into France 1940. Want to do it again? Just kidding. It's a pleasure to work with you and I'm thinking about some Italian armor. Know of any GBs?

Scott

PS How do I get a badge? I'm not sure how to do it.

Scott, I applaud you for finishing (It is finished?) under the circumstances you were in. I like that camo, much less intrusive then the caunter scheme which scares me to death.

Hey Guys, It's been a while! I did some heavy duty modeling over the past week. I actually did some finish painting in a hospital bed! When I got out of the MICU I had some time in a step down unit and did some painting. All non-flammable of coarse! The nurses took some Pict's. Hopefully they will e-mail them to me.  Anyway, I had a blast with this Tamiya Matilda. The kit nearly built itself. I decided to build it straight out of the box. During the build I did some light research and discovered lots of differences in the build I am doing and the actual Matilda of that time. Tamiya did a Matilda that answered some of these differences but this is the earlier kit from 1073. Still a great, fun build. As my talents improve I will add more to weathering and such. For now I'm happy as it is. There are many "oopsies" and any comments and recommendations would be appreciated.

The kit-

sorry, The kit-

The build went quick-

WHERE DID SHE COME FROM?

I primed and painted the inside prior to attaching the side armor-

Base coat-

some detail-

The camo was done by hand at The Hospital of St. Raphaels-

Some pastels-

Done for now. No marking in any research I did.-

Not bad considering the meds I'm on. I went out and bought another so I can do it justice. I found so much material on this tank and I want to post it as a WIP when I start it. I love you guys and thanks for the privilege to build with you!

Thanks Eric (regarding allowing the badge after the finish date).  I have no excuse, other than lack of time management skills.....oh well, I've enjoyed seeing everyone's builds.  Some great models built and presented by the group.

And I am aware of your "That's Amore' GB....I just don't have anything Italian in the stash!  However, I am getting ready to cash in my loose change cup so I was wondering what comes after "That's Amore"?  Any thoughts or is it too soon?  Sprue Brothers are running a 20% off of their Super Specials thru today......

Is that an additional 20% off??!!!!!!! I'd better check that out. Big Smile

Yes Bob, it's too early, but I'm leaning to my Dragon Tiger I for my next build. Just need to come up with a theme. perhaps Tiger-Striped or Tiger Family GB or whatnot. I'm just afraid that Tiger themed builds have been done to death. However, whom doesn't have one in the stash?

***I don't normally do this, but since this has been my most successful GB yet, due to participation and finished builds, that I will allow the badge to those who have participated and shared WIP pictures throughout the build that complete their model after the deadline. If you never posted any WIP pictures or just dropped out, then sorry. Just please post your finished build before picking it up. I know of at least 5 that have WIP's: Bobbaily, Iraqiwildman, bbrowniii, detailfreak, and Bufflehead. There might be more. I know Tim and Boyd are done, so they'd qualify anyway.

Eric, I have to agree this has been a great GB and I wish I could start my Char Bis build earlier but it is not looking good right now.  However it is still on my build list for this year probably in the summer.  I had to adjust my schedule to build a huge 1:35 UH-1H Huey for a good friend's 50th birthday coming up this Saturday.  His wife asked me to build one because he flew it for 14 years in the Army and the best thing she is paying for everything... so far $115 for this beauty.  You can find it in the Helicopter forum if you are interested...

With less than a month left to go, I don't think I will be able to finish my Char in time but I will build it in honor of Eric's GB later this year.  Sorry about that... I owe you one Eric.

Thanks for that.

I was planning on getting it finished tonight, but my beagle keeps getting out of the backyard, so my wife wants me to plug the gaps under the fence tonight. I've had to chase her (the beagle, not the wife) through the woods the last 2 mornings. It seems like something like this comes up everytime I have some free time at the workbench.

I have really enjoy following all the builds for the last 6 months. Wow, it does not seem that long ago we started this. I am now reading a Time-Life book on the blitzkrieg in Poland and France and am finding it very interesting.

Been a while since I've posted but I've been following the builds...and WOW!  Outstanding work by all....

Dave, Tim, Ernest, Greg & Terry-great armor builds....really neat stuff.

Gamera & Theuns-very nice builds on your planes.....good to see some allied planes in the mix.

Sorry if I've missed anyone since the last post....again, all the work here has been inspirational....all great builds on some very difficult subjects.

My 109 is 95% complete-all the 'little bits' have been painted and are just awaiting to be attached.  After that, a flat coat and maybe some more weathering and it's done.

Eric-another fine GB you've organized and run......what's next?

I've been running the Italian-themed GB "That's Amore" for 2 months now. LOL I guess I did a pretty poor advertising campaign on it. We have some great stuff: ships, planes and armor. I'm building Tamiya's ancient Semovente. The build runs to the end of May, so you have 3 months to get her done. You can enter anytime.

Dave: Super job! Love the dusty look, it really suits the vehicle. I'll admit I was worried when you said 'Historic Model' since after building one of their kits I'll avoid the brand like a plague but you did a great job on her. Looking forward to the diorama.

Bob: Thanks, funny I built the plane years ago and just threw her in here just for the halibut.

Thanks, Andy.     I look forward to finishing the Su-76i for the Pz III build when I get home in April. Are you still planning to attend AMPS?

DaveB- No hurry we still have four months left... Whistling. Oh yes I am still planning to go. It would be great if we can meet.  PM me so we can make plans.

Dave glad you could slip in under the wire and present your build. Very nice. I like the filtering and agree with you about not applying over a gloss. I feel it has less bite. I just gloss under the decals and that's it.

I kind of hate to see this GB running out of momentum, but it's time has come. For those still building, please don't give up yet. I would like to see the actives complete their builds.

Historic Plastic Models 1/35th scale Sd.Kfz. 231 6-rad

Here's the final installment.

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/:550:0]
The model after a couple thin coats of Future and the decals applied. The decals were thick and fragile. It took Solvaset to get them to conform to some spots and care had to be taken to avoid breaking them (which a couple did.)

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/:550:0]

Dot filtering was done using raw umber, titanium white, Prussian blue and Payne's gray oils. I usually do dot filtering directly over the paint (i.e. without a Future coat) because I think it works best that way. Applied over a gloss coat it seems to streak rather than influence the tint of the color beneath it. But, knowing what was in store for the vehicle (a heavy dust coating) I didn't think it was going to make that much difference.

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/:550:0]

Following the dot filtering, a gradual build up of dust was airbrushed using Floquil mud from their model railroading line of paints. I always feel a bit hesitant piling on the dust or mud for fear of being accused of hiding mistakes in building but the reference photo I worked from showed a vehicle that was totally covered in a thick layers of dust. I actually toned it down considerably. After the dusting, I did some pin washes, minor pigment dusting and then Testor's Dullcoted the entire vehicle.

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/:550:0]

I wish I could say this kit was a joy to build but it was pretty much the opposite. It was more like, "Am I ever going to finish this thing?" It came close to being bounced off the wall more than once. Granted, some of the issues were my own fault but the kit itself was hardly of Tamiya/DML, et. al. quality. As a limited run Czech kit from a decade ago it definitely had its faults: poor fit in many places, confusing instructions, overly-thick parts (the Eduard photoetch set  really helps here) and poor decals.  On the positive side, if you persevere, the results can be an impressive model of a unique vehicle.

I usually place my finished kits on a simple base with a figure but, as I plan to incorporate this one in a diorama, I passed on the base.  I intend to add the 231 to a diorama including the Tamiya Stug III, Bronco Adler scout car, a knocked-out Tamiya French Char B and about a dozen figures. At the rate I'm working I should be occupied for the remainder of the year.

So, stick a fork in it because it's done.  I enjoyed reading everyone's posts and seeing your builds. Keep up the good work and hopefully see you in another  GB.

Hey Guys,

It's been so long since my last post I can't remember when it was. I had to put modeling on the back burner for awhile but then realized this build closes on March 1.  Fortunately, I was pretty far along and didn't have to do many marathon sessions to finish up. I'm now out of state (and away from the bench) for seven weeks but brought a hard drive with the in-progress build photos which I now offer in a couple separate posts since there are a dozen photos.  In the second post, I'll offer a brief evaluation of the kit.

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/:550:0]

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/:550:0]

Final construction. Most of the Eduard photoetch set for the kit was used. The electrical lines running to the smoke grenades are polyester thread coated in superglue.

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/:550:0]

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/:550:0]

The vehicle finished with Floquil grey primer. You may notice the electrical lines are missing. When the Floquil primer hit them they frayed something terrible which surprised me since they were pretty well sealed with glue. Possibly the lacquer thinner used to thin the primer caused the problem?  I'll eventually replace them when I find a substitute for the thread.

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/:550:0]

The panzer grey basecoat applied. I used a mix of Tamiya XF-24 and XF-8 at about a 4:1 ratio.

 [View:/themes/fsm/utility/:550:0]

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/:550:0]

The camouflage added using Vallejo German Camouflage Brown. This is the first time I've used Vallejo paints for anything other than figures and was surprised at how well it airbrushed diluted about 50/50 with distilled water.

More shortly in another post.

Had to fix some painting booboos when I knocked off a few parts Black Eye, but here's the A13 with camo.  The colors seem a bit on the light shade, but weathering will darken it.  Still not too sure about those G3 and G4 colors.....Hmm

Jack - I can't seem to remember where I found the Khaki Green mix mentioned, but it don't think it was the Missing-Lynx link you posted.  I don't recall reading that thread before.  Still, its very interesting as there doesn't seem to be any definite evidence as to the actual colors used.....hmmm sorta like U.S. olive drab , German panzer gray, Russian green, etc.!! Stick out tongue

Camo half done, I'll try to post pics this evening!
