That would indeed look odd...

Well, a small update is better than no update at all, I suppose??

A little Saab work over the weekend, lots of masking tape on the fuselage (which I apparently didn't take a picture of?!) and masking the canopy glass. Alllllll those little 1/72 squares makes me realize why modern jets with bubble canopies are so popular...

Me too! 12+ hour shift work 7 days a week at work = no modeling :(

I'm also still in playoffs for my softball league, on top of running the family around. I should (SHOULD!) have free time starting Friday night. Airbrushing the Saab is on top of my to-do list. I probably should double-check the canopy parts were glued alright first though. May not hurt to back up the white glue with a few dabs of CA.

Hmmmm - trying to post in the "standard site" with the newer  iOS...

Sprayed my J21 with the topside green, Tamiya acrylics NATO green and.... some previous mixed dark green that I found sitting in my airbrush drawer. Man I'm cheap sometimes!

Overall green sprayed & masking tape removed last Friday evening annnnd.... I got carried away & removed the tape from the glass as well. Planning on hand-applying the dullcoat anyway, so not a huge deal I suppose.







Glass (especially the rear-side windows) still seem to sit a little proud, but there realy is no wiggle room. The real thing does actually bulge so I'm not too worried. Will fair it in a little better with some white glue.

With Future gloss coat applied & prop finished up....







Also did some paint work on the undercarriage bits, no pics there though.

Canopy does seem a little large but not sure there's anything you can do about that.

It doesn't look too far off to be honest, the pictures I've seen show a sort of bulged/blown look, even the panels just to the sides of the pilot's head. I just want to blend it a little better than I have so far.

Exhausted last night, think I'm still fighting off that bloody cold that's going around. About to head to bed & decided I should at least try out my "test decal" to say I accomplished something. Decal responded well so I decided to just go ahead & do them all. (Not all that many on the J21 anyway) Here we are after last night's work:











These are the original kit decals, paper-thin but conformed to the panel lines quite well. Gave them a quick bath in Micro-Set last night to help them snuggle down. The only real issue is that they are sooo thin they are slightly transluscent. Not a huge deal except for the roundels on the nose, which overlap the green-to-gray area. I'll see if I can hide some of that with the weathering process.

That, ad a few other "fiddlies" - paint on the exhaust stubs & cannon muzzle etc. Plus the landing lights. I can see the finish line!!

Well, I did put down another primer coat on the Viggen, slowly taking care of all the rough spots, then I have to go back and replace all the friggin' panel lines I just sanded off...........

Ahhh - the panel lines! Yes, I'll have a few to replace. To be honest, at 1/72 I'm very likely to lightly draw them back on with a fine pencil & then clear-coat it.

That's true... According to that SAAB magazine, the German companies did more to kick start Sweeden's aviation industry than anyone else, so I guess it's only fitting that Manny pokes his head in here.

Thankfully, Manny left his white inspection gloves in the stretch limo................ 

In the home stretch now, gear bay doors, some weathering and a round of dull coat!

J21 is finito - just need to take my final pics tonight.

Well folks, I'm calling it done, pending any suggestions from the modelling world on items I may have missed. Heller's 1/72 Saab J21A, built oob except for:
• shiny tread-free wheels replaced with wheels from an FW190, not entirely accurate, but better than the option
• masking tape harness.
• also drilled out the forward tips of the booms to add landing lights.

A fun little kit of an interesting machine.
