Thanks, Eric -- but the large grills are on a 3D section, the edges are curved down which PE would do neatly, but vinyl mesh would have to conform to a frame to get that shape... Hmmm... I wonder, has anyone ever compared Aber set #35G12, which is the perfect set but for the Dragon King Tiger, to the Tamiya dimensions?

I used them on the henschel turret kit and they worked fine. They give you a little diagram to trace on the mesh.

Thanks, Eric -- I just found the perfect set from Alliance Modelworks, a complete set of grills with options for the Porche or Henschel versions, and even the Jagdtiger as well. They were on special at Sprue Bros and are now on their way. Okay, I have the kit, the zimmerit and the etch, the only other item I might consider is a turned barrel...

I didn't realize we're less then 2 months away. I haven't made up my mind if I'll stick with the Tiger or go with the Tamiya Jagdpanther. I think it would be an easier build, and I have no idea how much time I'm going to have for this. Maybe 1 good workday a week.

Are you going to go with a Cavalier set? They tend to be a little easier to find and cheaper, especially on ebay.

Leaning a bit to the Tamiya jagdpanther. Has anyone built it? Are the tracks long enough to glue down?

I would like to confirm that i will be joining with a 1:35 tiger but don't know what manufacturer yet though.

The kit is a late  March 1945  King Tiger issued to the sPzAbt. 502 number 555.  From the limited research I have done so far, it belonged to battalion commander Kurt Hartrampf and was based at Oder-front near Frankfurt, I'm using the Tamiya Ardennes kit - 35252.

In a historical note I believe it was the the tanks of 502. Schwere Panzerabteilung that lead the breakthrough at Halbe, which went into history as one of the bloodiest fights in the collapsing Third Reich. In preparation of the Soviet offensive across Oder, the sPzAbt. 502 was deployed in the area of Diedersdorf-Litzen together with the 9th Army.

Although the army could hold the Oder-front near Frankfurt am Oder, other segments of the defense soon collapsed under enormous Russian pressure. By end-April the 9th Army was bypassed and encircled by the 1st Ukrainian and 1st Belorussian fronts. The last five Tiger IIs of sPzAbt. 502 were used to lead a desperate breakout, followed by tens of thousands of soldiers and refugees. In three days the enormous column moved through woods and villages, constantly attacked and fired upon by waiting Russians on both flanks. Despite all the fire from Russian artillery, T-34s and anti-tank guns, the five Tigers were able to establish a breakthrough, however, almost 60 thousand German soldiers and civilian refugees perished in the exodus. The Reich outlasted their sacrifice for another nine days.

I still need to pick up a replacement barrel and tracks for this baby so any recommendations from the experts would be really appreciated.

Darson, great historical story you shared. The end for the Germans was brutal indeed.

Tamiya makes some nice tracks and they are cheaper then the MK's or Friuls. I'm not 100% sure, but I think Dragon makes magic tracks for the Tiger II's.

Now we can't have it down there on page 2 can we.

I'm really leaning to the Tamiya kit. I'm not going to get much time at the bench I'm afraid. Arrgh. One extreme to the other.

Tony - I hope you consider the Tamiya Mid-Production as that is what I am also building and I too am rather new to the armor modeling world. Might prove fun to build alongwith eachother. Just a thought.
