I ultimately decided I wanted a JG1 190 that was from October 1943 for personal reasons.  September and October of 1943 was the time span that my grandfather manned the ball turret of a 390th BG B-17.  He once told my father that "I got one (fighter) I think", so I figured this was a fitting subject, maybe the one he got....lol.  He would ultimately be shot down on the October 10th Munster Raid then become a POW of Stalag 17B.  I can't wait to see yours finished.

Now thats some history right there. Don't hear of those stories much anymore. Thanks for sharing that, Joe

Bish:  Looking great.  I like the dropped flaps.  It does appear we are building the same subject "White 5".  I was considering robbing "White 11" (with the black cat) from my Eduard A-6,  but I ultimately decided I wanted a JG1 190 that was from October 1943 for personal reasons.

Nathan:  Great work as usual.  Now I know how to do my brake lines, which should be soon.

Archangel:  That mill looks sweet. What a bummer that all of that will be covered up by that fan.

That's a beautiful job on the DB engine Mustang. Like the tubing clamps and the gun barrels. Got the barrel sets for the FW, will be the first time to try them out. What did you used for the prop gear spline?

Scott

The prop gear spline was the stock piece painted with MM Gold enamel and a wash applied over that. Tubing came from Verlinden with the update set, rubber hose sections were electrical wire heat shrink tubing slid onto the tube/coolant line and shrunk in place. Clamps were used from photo etch trees. Gun barrels are from Master Model. I use em on every plane I build now. They are just BAD TO THE BONE....

Archangel: That engine looks really good. Some really cool detail there. How long have you been working on the engine now?

Longer than I certainly planned for, I'd say maybe 6-8 hrs if that. I try to get to the kit on my days off on Tues and Weds, but than there's the Honey Do's and another things that cuts into my build time. I wasn't planning on going into that much detail on the kit for when I do I usually get bogged down and burned out but this one been fun to do. Finding some excellent pics of the BMW engine is fueling my need to add a little more detail to the motor.

Hang in there brutha! I must have put around 30+ hours in my DB605 I built last year for my 24th scale 109. The hard work does pay off.

Thanks for the looks guys. Mustang, the Flow aid is to get that damned Flory's stuff to break apart. It breaks the surface tension (just like adding soap) of the wash, otherwise the stuff just acts like one big azz bubble on top the model. I still have to slop it around with a brush to get it to spread out nice. Still, I find once I have it in the panel lines it still wants to pull itself outa there and hookup with itself..??!! It takes me two applications all over the model. I still like the crap though...lol!

Archangel, all that work will pay off once the engines on the model, it looks really good.

Jester, stop draggin your you know what and get that Dora painted! Haha! Can't wait to see it. I love longnoses so much I almost always find myself building another one, even while I'm building something else completely different, just so I can say I got one on my bench.

Nathan -  Everything is looking awesome. I too am intrigued by the Liquitex. I have Promodeller wash and all it ever did was bead up on the gloss coat. I considered adding some dish soap to it to reduce the surface tension. So, does the Liquitex serve this purpose?

Archangel- Sweet job on the engine. You are doing excellent work.

Mustang, now that is dedication brother!!

Bish, there is nothing wrong with those checkers that I can see. Looks great!

Nathan, looking good man. Its always a great feeling to get the wheels on isn't it?

Sweet look radial Archangel!!

Still chipping away at seams and rescribing any lost detail on the D9. Havent had a whole lot of time to work on it honestly.

Nathan: That is one sweet 190! Thats an awesome job on the cowling and again on the defense bands! Whats the benefit of the Flow Aid? Been meaning to look into that subject more on my own but saw it in your picture and figured I'd just ask you.

I use Gunze 76 and it has a slight blue tint to it, but I lightened it with some white so it probably washed out the blue.

Thanks Nathan, yours is looking sweet.

Is the underside of your as grey as it looks in the photo's. My RLM 76 is notacably blue, but i have noticed a lot of colour plates and many models where it looks more grey.

Nice work Bish. The cowling came out great I think. No hint at all to your troubles. I see a few similar schemes here, and nice to see how different people approach the same thing.

Smallish...update for me. I did some touch-up to the A-4 and got a wash on the A-8:

The materials:

The madness:

the results:

Sprayed the white stripe and the black part of the fuselage cross on the A-4:

I also glued the wheels on:

Bish

Nice little set up there.

Time for an update i think.

After finally get the nose to a point where i was happy, i finished the rest of the decals and then gave it a flat coat. It was the left side of the nose that i had a problem with.

So now to get this wrapped up. Ashide from the length issues, this is a nice little kit.

Looking good Bish - are those Luftwaffe ground crew I see in the plastic container?

Bish, You've done a bang up job on the checkers. Looks excellent. Your work is progressing very nicely. It coming out tremendous.

I'm having to spend a little time doing some touch up on mine. The PE cockpit rear deck was a smidge wide so I am filing down the edge of the PE part and filling and sanding with some Mr. Surfacer. But, she's moving along.

A beautiful badge!!  I'd join the build just for the badge.

lawdog, thats stunning work there. You have done a much better job with the checked nose than i did. I wish i had done it that way to start with rather than decals. Looks like we are doing the same aircraft as well.

Thanks for all of the compliments.  Nathan and Scott, very nice work so far.  Unfortunately I have been busy with other things lately but I did get some modeling time in on the A-6 over the past few days.  The airframe came together in no time flat.  All I can say is this Hasegawa 190 is great fit-wise.  The only issue I had was the gap on the lower rear wing/fuselage joint.  No biggie though.  It also took some time getting the wing root joint (line) off the wing root cannon cover(s), mostly because it was in a tough spot to effectively sand out.  This line should not be there and only Eduard has gotten this area right on 190's.

I've heard cowl assembly on this kit can be tricky.  I had no trouble.  I first fused the lower piece to the two side pieces with Tenax 7R and let it dry overnight. I then added the upper piece.  No issues, it fit the front of the airframe like a glove.  On a sidenote, I did notice that most of the panel lines seemed unusually shallow on this kit, therefore, I decided to forgo primer and go straight to preshading with XF-1 Flat Black.   At this time I also painted the side fuselage (behind the exhaust) black and then taped off the triangles common on 190's.  The white stripe along the top was added with XF-2 and taped off as well.

As I said, I decided that I would paint in the cowl checkers in lieu of the decals for several reasons.  For off, Hasegawa decals are s#$t...not other way to say it.  Also I decided do this for simple aesthetic reasons and the ease of weathering the area later.  Paint just looks more convincing.   In case anyone is interested, this is how I did it:

1.  I preshaded XF-1 Flat Black on the cowl panel lines then sprayed it XF-2 Flat White.  I cut it with Tamiya Lacquer Thinner for extra bite into the plastic for the upcoming taping.

2.  I then cut out a few checkers from the decal sheet to use as a size reference.

3.  I then took out my trusty mirror glass piece and threw down a strip of Tamiya tape.  There is no substitute for this stuff, especially for this type of work.

4.  With a new #11 Exacto blade and the aformentioned cut out decal, I commenced to cut squares out of the tape.  I cut up numerous rows untilI felt I had enough.

5.  Using the instruction sheet profile on the last page (for decal placement), I then started on the port side and worked my way around the cowl.  For the front row of checkers (nearest the cowl ring), I took the same squares and cut a slit in them so they could be manipulated on the curved edges.

6.  Once I had all the squares added, after a few minor adjustments, I sprayed the cowl XF-1 Flat Black with a tad of XF-8 Flat Blue added.  I then taped off the cowl leaving the lower section exposed and it was sprayed XF-3 Flat Yellow with a touch of XF-7 Flat Red to simulate RLM 04 yellow.

Now for some pics...

I then redirected my focus to the camolage which will be the standard day fighter scheme RLM 74/75 over 76.  I mixed up RLM 76 by Tamiya's recommendations of XF-2, XF23, XF-66 until it looked right to my eye. It eemed too blue so I added more XF-66 Grey.  I then added XF-2 Flat White to the paint, thinned it, then streaked it along the bottom.  A dilluted Red Brown mix was then added as a post shade to certain areas.

I bought some Gunze Aqueous paints, specifically the RLM colors, through the blackmark......err I mean from overseas, primarily because I've read they are quite accurate.  That, and I'm tired of trying to get the upper surface RLM shades right with Tamiya mixes (See my D-9 elsewhere in the forum).  I started with the RLM 74 and cut it with Tamiya's X-20 Thinner.  This stuff seemed to behave just like Tamiya paint, but it wasn't as dense.  It seemed to initially go on a bit translucent so I had to keep adding more paint.  Once I got the ratio right, It did go down nice and smooth.  I then cut it with Tamiya XF-2 Flat White and streaked the upper wings.  I had no issues with mixibg the two brands.  I think I finally found a method for the upper RLM colors.  Once done, this received the sme red brown postshading.  Here's the results.

The RLM 75 will be next.  Stay tuned...

Joe

GORGEOUS!!!

Hey Rix no prob- definately keep oils and enamels away from Alcad's Klear Kote line!!, as they are oil based themselves. Hey Mustang, no sweat. Work happens. I'll be missing May through August with zero bench time as the Flying season startsCrying But the 190s will be done by then.
