Wouldn't ya know. I started cutting sprue on my Draken yesterday and then lo and behold when I checked my ebay alerts this morning there was a vintage Revell 1/72 Saab Draken exactly like the one I built as a young 'un. Put a bid in and won't end for nine days. Doubt I will go higher than I bid as it is currently $30.00 including S&H.

The wife and I are leaving for Seattle for X-mas. Thus, no modeling will occur until the new year. So to you and yours I wish you all the Very Merriest of Christmas'. May all your modeling wishes be granted and your stashes filled to overflowing.

Hey Ken.  Awesome. Can't wait to get this thing under way. My son and I got started but with the holidays it's been really tough. My brother and his family are coming in tonight so I tore the workbench down to make room for them. It gets replaced by a bigger one after Christmas. Any how the point is that I can't wait to start making headway on it again. Glad you got the P-38. Will be seeing you here, Joe

I have finally settled in and got a computer up and running.  I moved halfway across country to buy a house and start school, unfortunately my computer was one of the items sacrificed to the moving gods.  Home repairs and studies have overwhelmed any time I once for which committed to the hobby desk.

Mustang1989 and Bish, I want extend thanks for taking on and running with the Group Build.  I acquired my “first” kit, or at least a re-box of said kit during my absence along with the decals to substitute the original’s stickers.  I managed to transport all of my paints, glues and thinners in several ammo cans as the moving company would not do so.  The search is still on for my airbrushes and the sort that the moving company did transport although it is in the mountain of boxes in the garage awaiting its rediscovery.

My first kit, for making good grades on a report card many moons ago, was the Monogram Snap-Tite P-51D Mustang.  I recall spilling the yellow paint on the dinner table and erasing any “atta-boys” earned with the report card.  The decals are Eagle’s 1/72 P-51Ds which has markings for the Mustang represented by Monogram.  I plan on scavenging through the garage to gather the necessary tools to do a little work on my Mustang over the holiday break from school – squeezed between the bouts of honey-do house repairs.

WIP:
Trying to get my hobby stuff sorted - just moved and still unpacking.

Hey deatillio,

Glad to see you back man. She's all yours if you want to resume the control. Bish and I figured something must have happened that kept you away. Just trying to keep the momentum going in the interum. That sux when you have other things going on that prevent moving ahead on the hobby you love. Anyhows you can tag along or resume control as long as we are all having fun here.

Nice to meet you Deattilio, Glad you made it the move okay. I too hate moving.

I'm up for a P 38. I'm not real sure what kit was my first (Yea, It's been too many years. And they say the mind is one of the first things to go. LOL) Anyhow, my first kit was anyone of 3; a p38, or a B17, or a P 51.

Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and that Santa leaves lots of Plastic under the tree for them.

The reason for the name is I love trucks, Yea I build model trucks too.

I'll post my pics here

My P-38 came this morning in the mail. Can't wait to get started on it Big SmileGeeked

It's bringing back memories.

I would like to join with the Revell Mig-21. It is actually the second model I built but my first model has not been re-issued and I found only one on e-bay and I didnt think I needed to pay 185.00 for a Petty Motorsports race car.

It is 1/48 scale. Also will we be allowed to rescribe?

I don't see why not, since scratch building is allowed, as I recall.

Yea! Made it to Seattle and I am able to follow along with you all.

Deattillio - Glad to have you back. Good to see the the move was successful.

I figured rescribing would be acceptable given that the idea of the GB was to apply the skills you've learned to your first, or near first, model. Being said I have not any way shape or form 'mastered" rescribing. I have practiced a bit and I find that my 8 month old grand daughter could probably scribe a straighter line than I. Should I win the vintage Draken with raised panel lines I believe I will try a technique described a year or so ago in FSM of highlighting raised panel lines.

Merry Christmas, Joe

Hi everyone,

a post to tell how & why i got started in modeling, and why I built what I did.

I grew up listening to my Dad and his brothers talk about thier ww2 experiences. All but one of them flew the planes or flew in them. Dad was stationed in Panama flying a B-26. 2 uncles were in B-17s, 1 uncle was in a B-24,(all 3 of these were in the Pacific) another flew off a carrier (he had to be different and went to the Navy LOL) My other uncle was in a Tank Destroyer in Patton's 3rd army & earned a silver star for his role in the Bridge at Remagen

As soon as I finish a few other builds I have going, I'll be building a Tank Destroyer too.

greentracker- That's awesome to hear about your dad and uncles and their stories. My dad was in the Vietnam war as a green beret. Dad being dad he always downplays everything to keep from sounding overdramatic. He doesn't talk about it much. Interesting story you have and I'm sure you have lots of interesting stories to tell your children.

Made a start on the F-86. I was lucky enough to get hold of an original boxing at a reasonable price.

This is the very first kit i built. Back in 1978 my parents had seperated and my dad moved into an upstairs flat. We used to spend weekends with him and on one wekend soon after he moved in me and my younger brother were playing with our toy cars on the bare living room floor. The noise rather upset the guy living downstairs. So not a good start. But things were soon made up and a few months later the neighbour bought me this for my 9th birthday. I know he helped me build it. But the only things i can remember are were used the markings on the box lid and it was painted black.

And thats how i started modelling and i haven't looked back since. And even though i have progressed to ships, Sci Fi, 32nd Aircraft and 35th Armour, 1/72nd Aircraft still make up by far the largest part of my collection.

As you can imagine, being a 70's Airfix kit, the cockpit is pretty bare. My scratchbuilding skills are not upto much. But as i don't have anything in the spares box that will work, i am going to scratch build the cockpit, or at least attempt to as best i can.

So far, i have added the kit parts and the side consuls from sheet styrene.

Thats it for now.

Greentracker - Wow. That is some definite inspirational heritage you have. Have you recorded any of their stories?

Bish - Nice start. This is going to be quite fun as we'll be facing similar challenges.

Thanks Joe. Actually this scratchbuilding isn't as bad as i thought. Though i don't think i will give up good resin or PE pits. I have added a couple of levers and even a nice round dial useing 5amp fuse wire. No more pics just yet, but its coming on nicley.

Bish - Sounds real good. Even with the newer repop Draken I already have I was sizing up the scratchbuilding i would do to the seat. I do believe the vintage Draken, which i will know if I've won tomorrow morning, has the pilot molded into the seat. I also have the option of using parts from the newer kit to enhance the older one. You know even if I don't win the kit I bid on there is another available that is in questionable condition with some parts already off the tree, but from the photos it appears there is enough there to salvage.

About time for me to share my story of my humble modeling beginnings. To my knowledge the first kit I built, or was assisted in building by my brother, was some small scale battleship which i am rather sure was the IJN Yamato. I was 7 yrs old. No clue as to the make or even scale but it was a light greenish plastic and it was built scrictly unpainted. My first introduction to part fitting, instruction reading and of course glue. I had that model around for quite some time until it finally fell to the almighty BB gun.

My interest in modeling was certainly spurred by the fact that my father was a Navy pilot. He was a flight instructor out of Pensacola NAS during the war and flew in the reserve until he retired. The fun part of my fathers stories was that he flew every imaginable Navy aircraft available. The majority of his flight time though was in the PBY Catalina which he loved along with the F4U Corsair. My father maintained his private pilots license for many years and I flew countless hours with him in his Cessena, In addition my 2 oldest brothers were helicopter pilots. The oldest started in the Navy and served in Vietnam, of which he doesn't discuss much. After his service in the Navy he transffered to the Coast Guard where he retired. My second oldest was also in the Navy where he flew the H53 Sea Dragon in a Mine Interdiction Squadron. He retired after his stint of commanding his squadron. Thus my interest in aircraft was fostered. Strangely, I have yet to build either a PBY, a Corsair or a Hellcat. I kept this strange idea in my head that i wanted to hone my modeling skills quite well before building the aircraft that I truely wanted to. This reluctance ended up resulting in never having built any of my fathers aircraft prior to his death. This needless to say bothers me to this day. Along with not having sat down with him as we had planned and recording his exploits and submitting them to the National Archives.

This is also coupled with the fact that I always from an early age had a huge interest in history, mainly military history. Thus, i got my BS in History. This led to a career in wildland firefighting, go figure.

Anyhoo, i built models prolificly up until I went to college in 1980 and did not start actively building again until 4 yrs ago. Yet, during my hiatus I always kept up with the modeling world and continued buying kits and supplies. Well, that's kind of down and dirty. i look forward to further shares from you all and relish the reflection on my early modeling and having wonderful folks such yourselves to share it with.
