Pretty soon even two wings won't be enough. First it will be triplanes...then experimental four-wing fighters...then this:

...or this:

It's a slippery slope, my friend.

Yep. I've been eyeing my WNW Pfalz D.IIIa very seriously. I've been walking around the house with the instructions for the past week, planning out the build. Not good, as I have MANY other things that need doing. And a Conan fig on the horizon now. Still, it calls to me ...

Did you only order 1?  That's the problem cuz you're gonna want anotherStick out tongue

And shiv... get it.  You're gonna love it.  The Albatros D.Va was the 1st WNW kit i built and the Roland was the 2nd.  Did I mentioned you are gonna love it?

Wingnut

Your the reason I bought mine I saw your build for the GB and thought I'd give myself a challenge next time I go WW1 and try to get one a quarter as good. I've been looking at the after market stuff and I'm tempted by the resin seat and the brass machine gun but have to see how the kit items look when they are in my hand

Well it's done. I gave into the addiction and my Rolland should be here in 3-4 weeks.

Tim, it's a great kit! I've built 3 WnW's kits so far (with the D.VII currently on the bench and their Albatros D.V and late Fe2b waiting in the wings), and the Pfalz has to be my favorite to this point. The fit is flawless and the detail right up there with the D.VII.....

Tim/Shiv/Phil -  go for it, gentlemen!  Buy more WnW kits - you won't be sorry.  I've built 10, have 10, and have 3 underway.  And yes...I need more.  They are the best.

Tim - you're fine, my friend...you're only walking around looking at one WnW instruction sheet.  You haven't completely been hooked until you have at least three of them out for study at once...

If anything, I think it'll be an easier build. Of course, I've just shot off my propeller by typing those words, but ...

Sorry it took so long, but I finally added GMorrison's Felixstowe to the Hall of Fame.

Again, congrats on bringing her home!

Absolutely, Tim. Much easier. I'm sure you could squeeze in one in 45 days (snap snap, grin grin, wink wink, nudge nudge, say no more!)

There's a Curtiss H-16 on sale at Squadron. Might just have to.. but there needs to be a biplane brotherhood to make that worth it.

OK so the Wingnut Albatross has arrived and a thought struck me and I'm sure one of you gentlemen will be able to help.

With the big decals that cover the full wing etc do you paint under them or lay them against the bare plastic?  I'm thinking they will look better with something under them but not 100% sure its necessary.

Thanks in advance

The WNW website advises against putting the decal on bare plastic.  I took their advise and prime the wings on my 1st Albatros.  My apologies if you know this already but remember you have to cut the strip to a length to fit the wing front to back and turn the panel you cut.    With the WNW decals you have to trim the long edge... do this 1st... just and very thin sliver.  The printed pattern overlap and you can't see it until you butt the edges together and you get a dark line.

Hey, Phil.  Someone recommended using gloss black under lozenge decals, since you can't really prime in any of the lozenge colors.  You benefit from allowing the decals to adhere better, and if there are minor gaps, nicks, or tears they aren't as noticeable with black as they are with a lighter "neutral" color like gray or tan.

I've used that method now on at least 4 kits, and it's worked well.  I use Tamiya Black as a primer.  Hope that helps.

Enjoy the kit - she's a fun build.

Phil,

I'll echo Chuck's answer. I used Tamiya black gloss from a spray can on my D.VII's wings. In fact, the instruction book suggested it. Also, it warned against simply applying clear to the wing and laying the decal over that. I'm not sure why ... perhaps an FSM experiment is in order.

Interesting, I'd never apply decals over bare plastic but I never thought about using black as a primer there. Good luck and please let us know how it goes.

I did get the Nieuport rigged, sprayed the bare metal cowling and found trash in the paint. So I'll have to sand her down and repaint, crossing my fingers - it can't be too long till the finish now.

Edit 8/19/2013: Well if it makes any difference at this late date, wheels, engine, cowling etc are done and just need to be attached. I still need to paint the fancy tri-colour spinner, not sure how to do that.

Well my WNW Rolland should be here in the next day or two and was wondering I ordered their book as well. Anyone else seen the book and can let me in on any hints as to how helpful it will be?

I don't have the book, but I saw some reviews and it seems quite good. The question is - Is it good enough for this price? For me, 35$ is quite a lot. I can have a model or some yummi aftermarket goodies for those money.

On a side note - the Roland is absolutely gorgeos, you will love it!

Best regards,

Sasho

Don't kid yourself, you've got an enthusiastic following hoping to see more pics.

As to the masking, I wish I knew some magic, but thin strips of tape and a good eye is all I've ever been able to come up with.

Keep going guys!

Thanks guys for the vote of confidence. Been a bit distracted lately but still hacking away albeit slowly. I think I'm going to have to just do the spinner free hand. What's the worse that can happen? Just repaint it white and try it again...

Good luck, Gamera!  I agree with these guys about hoping everyone posts their finish.  Just because the "deadline" has passed doesn't mean I don't want to see a good looking model!  Especially one I've seen "form" as it were.  I bet most of us still get emails when there are posts, so keep it comin' is what I say...

I'm pretty close to getting back to the DH9a.  My storage building is in operation, I insulated and painted the inside of my garage/workshop and built a new shelf which will have doors on it when done (soon), and have one more bench to build which hopefully will be done tomorrow.  So, don't give up on this old codger!

So I've been doing some digging round the net looking for things to help my build of the Albatros D Va and found these turnbuckles.

www.gaspatchmodels.com/.../metal-turnbuckles-32.html

I cant say I was 100%  happy with the ones I used for my Pup but looking at these they look much nicer
