Okay, I have FINALLY got the RLM 70 onto the Stuka! The MM Acryl went on beautifully, a couple of misty-thin coats that laid down very nicely indeed, and I'll let them cure overnight before I start stripping the masking and doing touch-ups. Then it's on to the finishing stages...

Nice Job Mike. Looking forward to the masking coming off. What do you thin the MM Acrylic with?

I'm using Tamiya acrylic thinner X-20A at a ratio of 25% -- and I've found that a few drops of plain water added to the mix acts as a smoothing agent too...

Looking good Mike. That splinter scheme can be a pain to mask but the results can be well worth it.

Hi guys, I've been moving the Stuka along. She's unmasked, I touched up the underside where some overspray had settled along the edge of the leading edge masking, then satin-coated, laid on the panel wash and sealed it with another coat. At this time she's ready for the decals and I might even get to them tonight. I'm going with the kit sheet, which looks okay at this point.

Then I'll seal the decals and it's onto final assembly (landing gear, canon gondolas, radio mast, probes) and paint the small details (exhausts, the flexible area on the spats, running lights, tailwheel etc.). Dust work, exhaust stains, unmask the canopy and prop, install an antenna wire, and she's probably done...

She's looking great, Mike! That's a damn perfact masking job you did there!

I made some progress on the Jug. I finally got the resin engine to fit right, and I should be able to paint it and the inside of the cowling this weekend. I hope to get her ready for some paint in the next 2 weeks...

Thanks, SS! The decals are going on this evening, they're a bit grabby but not too bad -- about twelve to go at this time.

Looking forward to seeing the Jug in foreign markings!

Hi guys, I've been making some progress on the Stuka and as of this moment she's virtually done. Fine detail painting, mount the guns, add some antennas and cable, a few touch-ups on the prop, add some dust and carbon staining, unmask the canopy and she's done, so the next photos will be the gallery shots.

The kit decals were not all that good, as it happens. Some were off register, and by the second day there were big problems with silvering. This didn't show up badly except in a few places, notably the open crosses, so I've left the upper wing crosses without a final clearcoat to leave myself the option of replacing them at some point, assuming I can tease them away. The puncture + solvent trick simply did not work, it resulted in punctured, silvered decals. I have the Superscale sheets for German Fighter Crosses and there'll probably be a match among them.

So, hopefully posting the finished bird in the next couple of days...

Cheers, Mike/TB379

Can't wait to see it finished Mike. I wish I had known the decals would have been that bad, I could have sent the Academy ones, though not sure if they would have been any better. I have the superscale set for Rudels G-2 so I think I will be using those.

I did use the Fujimi ones on my G-1 as I couldn't find the Academy decals, and I didn't have a problem. So sounds like you had a bad batch.

Thanks, Bish! What number is the Superscale sheet? Does it feature the spiralschnauz? There are a couple of glaring differences in this model, as I simply could not mask the spiral, and with the way these decals have behaved I have decided not to attempt the yellow Vs on the wings. I should have masked them, but that's hindsight...

72-654 if you can still get hold of it. And yes it comes with spinner spiral. I am thinking of painting the yellow V on the wing as well. basically I have 3 sets of markings for this aircraft, Fujimi, Academy and Superscale, which at least gives me plenty of choice to pick and choose the best ones.

The V on the superscale set is just that, a V, as apposed to those Fujimi ones with the dog leg in them, so I am not sure which would be best. And I can't work out why Fujimi gives you 2.

I forgot, I grabbed a shot earlier of the finished Academy gunpods -- airbrushed, panel washed and satincoated:

You have done a great job on those, nice to see them all ready to fit. Are you going to add the wiring to them.

Fujimi gives you right and left wing Vs, the dogleg is set up to accommodate the trailing edge sweep... Should it be only one? 72-654, I'll keep an eye open on eBay for that sheet, though it sounds like the Vs should be painted... It's also available in Aeromaster at 1:48, I think, this bird deserves to get the larger treatment at some point too.

LOL, ye I bet you do. You have to look damn close to see that wiring anyway, if I didn't do a dio I probably wouldn't have bothered.

Okay, guys, here are the gallery shots of Rudel's bird. This is Fujimi's 1:72 kit of the G-2 model, with guns and cockpit details from the Academy kit transplanted, courtesy of Bish. Painted in MM Acryls and Tamiya Acrylics with a Paasche VL airbrush, using Eduard masks, Promodeler panel wash, oil wash grime streaking, MiG pigments and Microscale clear.

There are a few omissions: Rudel's yellow wing stripes -- I did not trust the decals in the end to be anything but heartache, and I should have sprayed and masked them, but we all have twenty-twenty hindsight... The spiralschnauze likewise, was impossible to mask and not supplied as a decal. The wing walks should be solid black but they look a damn sight better outlined with panel wash here. There is no attempt at this point to rig a radio wire, I just don't trust the mast to stay solid against the tension of the elastic line -- I might attempt to rig it at a later date. And lastly, the small antennas low on the fuselage and the flap actuators were painfully small parts for which there were no positive location devices, not so much as a hole to slot into, and they would have been falling off every time I touched the thing (one of the tailplane braces was remounted three times, and it had a locator hole. So in the end, I let those details slide. I'll do the Academy kit at some point and see how sharp that one builds; I'm also looking at doing Hasegawa's 1:48 Stuka in the not too distant future -- I'm happier working at larger size.

So, here's the evidence, all comments welcome!

Cheers, and it's been fun contributing to this GB! I hope there'll be plenty more completions, there's still three or four months to go.

That's a real beaut Mike. As you know, I am a huge Stuka fan, and its always a pleasure to see one, and even more to see one of Rudel's. And you have really done it justice. Nice to see those cannons and pit details put to good use.

Bish and Steve -- many thanks! I'm glad to have offered a solid "host's contribution" and this was my first Stuka since I was very young indeed, I built the Airfix kit something like 44 years ago! Well, it won't be my last, I'm already getting the urge to slap some 66 on the pit of Hasegawa's B-2 and finish her in markings for Crete, '41! Too bad that's too early to qualify as "Reich Defence!"

Cheers, Mike

Oh! I'm so there, Bish! I did some research yesterday, found the early pits were 02 with 66 panels, but that's as far as I got... Okay, May it is, I'll look forward to putting her together!

I'll keep a space for you. There's a good article on swannies models giving the painting guide for German aircraft interiors, as well as wheel wells, propellers and so on. Ye, on the B, its RLM 02.

Nice finish Mike. Great work on 72 scale. I'm impressed with your results using MM Acrylics. How many G-2s did Rudel fly anway? I recall his last one had a spinner spiral and white stripes on the tail?

Thanks, Nathan! 72 is a real challenge, and I'll be glad to get back to 48 as soon as I've knocked off another Phantom, hopefully by this weekend.

I've no idea how many, I do know Rudel flew a Fw 109 at some point, but finished the war back in a Stuka, which he deliberately wrecked on landing before surrendering!

I love the Stuka Mike, it's got a great finish. I hope my HS 129 is up to the same standard. That really is one of those eye catchers, congrats.

Cheers

Nathan, I have only seen images of two of Rudels G-2's. Both were marked the same aside from the werk nummer. The white stripe you mention was a marking applied to indicate the crew were surrendering to the Allies.

The one Mike has done was the one Rudel flew during the Winter of 44/45 and is I believe the aircraft he was in when he lost his leg.

He must have flown other G-2's, but photo's of his aircraft are not easy to find apart from his D-5, G-2 and 190D-9.

No, I haven't seen that one. The only Fw I thought he ever flew was the D-9. I would love to see those pics.
