Ken, nice looking kit. I have really been converted onto those Master barrels. I have the same set for all by 72nd Jug kits.

Bish - Yea, I like the tamiya kit too. There is so much more than the Revell kit. I'm converted now as well. I found a set for the P 38 too. It's actually cheaper and you can't get much cheaper than the 48 scale jug MGs. I will be getting them for all the planes i get.

I have them for a lot of mine, in fact I think for all that have exposed barrels. I don't have a Tamiya Jug but a couple of Hase kits and some Academy.

Is it me or does this seem like a long run in to a GB. It feels like this thread has been running ages and there still nearly 2 weeks to D-day.

Think of it as the build up to the op itself, great planning and detail in prep for an epic GB

Hmmm.. this sounds like something I might be interested in doing. I was thinking of doing a 1/48th scale Spitfire Mk.1 with D-Day Invasion stripes. That is if you're including Canadian / British  forces. If so, count me in.

I may also do a B-26 Marauder as well.

Wow! 7 pages and it hasn't even started yet!? Think I'll enter with the M21 Mortar Motor Carriage.

wayne, maybe I should have set the start date for June 5th and then postponed it a day. I missed a trick there. I think we have GB's about to burst out of every orifice at the moment. That could be painful.

Blacksheep, I don't know a great deal about Spits. But is that defiantly a Mk 1, I wasn't sure if they were still in use in 44.

I would like to possibly join this, I have the accurate miniatures Fw-190 that flew over one of the beaches (can't remember the pilot or which beach at the moment) I'm a very slow builder so I wont commit 100% right now. I may have another idea I could do too.

I think it was "Pips" Priller that flew over the beach--and maybe with a wingman?  I remember the scenes from "The Longest Day" film.

It is a Mk IXb of the 412 Canadian Squadron, not a Mk.1 as I originally thought.

Bish - I have found one. I will enter in with a 460 SQN RAF Lancaster Mk 1, flown by RAAF pilots during the bombings on the 5th/6th June 1944. They named it 'G for George'.

History:

The squadron made its first raid, against the German city of Emden, on 12 March 1942 with the Wellington Mk IV. In august 1942 the sqn began to be converted to Hellifax Mk II's, but in october the sqn was then converted again to the Lancaster MkI and III's. In May 1943 the sqn then moved to RAF Base Binbrook where it took part in extensive bombing of Berlin. During late 1943 and early 1944 460 sqn took part in many sorties in the Battle of Berlin. All through June and July the sqn flew many missions in support of D-Day. The last sortie flown by the Aussies in the 460 sqn was the bombing of Hitlers mountain retreat in burchtesgaden on ANZAC day, 1945.

'G for George' was a Mk I Lancaster, sqn code AR-G, ser. W4783. 'G for George flew 96 sorties over europe, where most Lancaster bombers never made it past 20. 'G for George' also has the distinction of bring every crew member home alive who flew aboard it.  'G for George' now resides at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.

The build wont start for a while.

Update: Upon doing more research I noticed that I made a mistake, 'G for George' was retired from duty in Apr 1944. 2 months before D-day. Therefore I will not be Marking it with AR-G, instead I will mark it with a random marking from the 460th SQN flown by RAAF crew.

I've been thinking about getting a 1/72 B-24 Liberator but I'm not sure which version was used on D-day

The Minicraft B-24 kits look to be reasonably priced , Hasegawa's are quite expensive although I did like their RAF version for the Costal Command but it was $80 not including shipping . I recently picked up a Frog Whitley and Airfix  Halifax and some Airframe decals for the Coastal command . I was thinking about doing a fleet of those Sub hunters too .

A B-24 with RAF markings would be a nice addition to my ever growing fleet .

John, those Hase B-24's are very nice, I have 6 of them, but your right, they are pricey. One thing I liked was the clear nose piece. This meant to was easy to convert a J to an H. I think the version used during this time would have been these later 2. But it just depends which units took part. I have a lot of sites on the 8th AAF in my favourites. Let me see what I can dig up over the weekend.

There was the 486th BG that took part, CMK is doing one of there's and I posted a link to their missions on the first page. But I will see what else I can find.

I did find some Extradecal B-24J decals in my stash I forgot I had

I'm not sure if the "Short Snorter" was one B-24 that was used during the D-Day Campaign along with Kentucky Belle ?

John, I managed to dig up some info. As this is a Norfolk based aircraft, I have the BG website saved. 990 flew on the BG's 100th mission on June 6th against St Laurent Sur Mer

We now only have 4 days until the off. I know most of us are involved in other GB's, so i don't imagine we will have lots of building going on straight away. Just make sure you have the GB on your to do list.

I wanted to make a start on the 1/72 LCT-6 Landing Craft Boat bang on the 6th . There will be lots of cleaning up on the Mach 2 pieces , so I'll be picking up a fist load of sanding sticks and sand paper tomorrow . I did end up buying two more large posters for the D-Day display cabinet , one with General Eisenhower addressing some para-troopers and another picture of troops making their way along the Normandy coast .

Thanks for the link on the B-24 markings Bish , It's always nice to have accurate info to go along with the decal markings , I'll just keep an eye out for a 1/72 Minicraft or Hasegawa B-24 kit on sale .

I have way too many GBs running atm, but count me in, Bish! I'm not sure on my subject yet, but it will probably be another Thunderbolt... I really don't know though.
